Quite a few Farangs working on Samui/Phangan
Just got back from Samui and Koh Phangan and noticed a lot of Farangs working down there. I got to know a few fairly well and they are working in bars or working for property companies etc.
They all had working visas arranged for by there place of work and are living the dream albeit on around 30,000 a month. I read a lot on this forum about BM's saying you cant work in LOS etc etc.
What are your thoughts? I'm tempted to join them.

They all had working visas while living on 30k per month.. Slight contradiction there no ??
Check min wage for farangs to get a work permit.
Bar work is a restricted profession and not one WP's are issued for.
So depends on what you mean by 'legal'.. Existing under the radar is more accurate.

Must agree with Livin, i thought the minimum wage for falang was around 60,000 baht a month. I could be mistaken though. But surly not 30k.
Bar work is not possible, although if you own the bar then its ok for you to work in it. Real estate is no problem though, many falangs here working in real estate.

It depends on which country you come from..
60k is Japanese and US I think
55k is UK and some Euros ??
50k was some other Euro IIRC.. May be canuks also..
Not sure on the numbers but I do remember its country specific.. Hence you often get a lot of different answers on this Q and they can all be 'right'..

Umm, no its not!!! Technically, you cant even change a CD. Remember the bar owner that got done in Pattaya for just meeting and shaking hands with a customer. You have to be pretty unlucky and most of the time its because someone has put you in, but it can and does happen.

WOW, really?? Ok my mistake, thats a little strange isn't it... I must admit i did just assume it would be ok, you own the bar, you can do what you want in it, well to a certain extent at least... Seriously IMO thats another DUMB thai law. how typical.

Why strange, you need a WP to legally do any form of work. Just because you own a bar or whatever, doesnt give you the legal right to work.

Yeah i guess i can see where you're coming from, however would it be considered work or just the bar/restaurant owner looking after his/her own place?
So if you own a bar/restaurant you wouldn't be able to do anything in it (work wise)? And if you wanted to you would have to get a work permit to work in your own place...? And of course its a restricted job so that wouldn't be possible.
I guess i assumed it ok because i've seen falang bar owners serving drinks, taking orders and talking to their customers. Although i must admit its on rare occasions only, but i've seen it happen.
If you had a work permit for a different job and owned a bar as well then could you serve drinks if you wanted to?? Might sound like a silly question but being a "third world" country maybe all they wanna see is a work permit...

A WP is granted based on a specific job with a specific employer. Having one for a day job in say a hotel, doesnt legally entitle you to work in your own business at night.
There arent too many countries around that let anyone enter and start working. I guess that you could even manage to buy a business here in Australia but you wouldn't be able to legally work it. So the rules in Thailand arent that different to anywhere else.

Oh ok... It doesn't make logical sense but legalities can be illogical at times. I get it now... Thanks for that.

Yes to monitor your investment you can be there.. You cant however work there..
Even some issues like sitting inside the bar v sitting outside of it..

Nope work permits are issued in detail.. Make consulting work really hard as it names the place and location.. where you are in the org flow chart etc.. Work permit is issued for name, company, address etc.. Cannot be applied to another address.. And certainly not to a different task or job.
The whole work permit thing is very very restrictive.
