gym dues
I did a search, and found very little on this.
For Patong Beach, as a tourist, I usually work out at the Phuket Gym. Paid 1,000 Bt for 20 days or so. But, as a soon to be local, what can I expect for LT rates (i.e. pay year in advance or month to month). Also, what are the alternatives to this gym? I read about Tai Life somewhere, but no website, and I'm not sure where it is.
Also, the card I got from Phuket Gym always looks like used toilet paper after 20 days or so. Do they laminate for locals??
Thanks,
The TanMan

Thanks Faulty Towers,
Great website. Farang facilities, but with farang prices! Patong is going upscale. Maybe the local Thai lasses can't afford this place? Chatting them up is part of the workout after all....
I will definitely look into this place. I'm tired of being chased around by the mosquitos in Phuket Gym, and they don't turn on the AC until late PM.
Best regards,
The TanMan

Don't worry about the local lovelies- they get a special rate in tailife. 2pm to 6pm is the best time for a perv.

Patong Gym
I worked out at a gym next to (that is, across the ally) from Water World Asia. Forget the name and I do not have the owner's number handy. Monthly is 700 baht, two floors, nice facilities. Owner is an American.
Opens at 0800, I think, stays open late but is not 24 hours. Liked it so much that when I move back to Patong I think I will find a place nearby. As you say, the gym choices in Patong are limited.
An, er, attraction is the three ladyboys who live across the ally, next to WWA. They make a point of flashing all the New Meat.

jojo,
Is this the one at the bottom of Nanai Road on the southside. At the intersection that takes you to Kata/Karon?

Thanks jojo,
This is the gym (Phuket Gym) I use whilst on holiday. If I can get 700 baht per month, then I will use it as an expat. There is a "Patong Gym" near the Nanai intersection that takes you out to Kata/Karon, but the equipment is dated. There is also a gym mid-Rathuthit, up some steps over a dive shop, but that was shite last time I looked in there. Then, there is the Tai Life, which is a little pricey, but I will have to take a look at when I get there permanently on 1/1/07.
I know there are also some gyms at the 3/4-star hotels, but I prefer the standalone gyms.
Thanks to all on this thread for their contributions, and helping me get this summary together.
Regards,
The TanMan

I'm very interested in joining a gym here but still haven't found one suitable. I guess it's more personal reasons why not...
Tai Life = new ownership and don't know how this will be affected. Nice place though a little pricey but it's got more to offer than the others
Fit Club = This is the one on Rat-u-Thit road but I see that this is for sale and therefore don't want to pay a membership if the building doesn't re-open as a gym.
Patong Gym = This looks good also but from friends that have worked out there, they've stated that it is tough at times getting on the equipment as they get too busy for what equipment they have.
I would be very interested in getting feedback from people that have tried a few of these or have their own preference. Due to working evenings, I will require a place that is not too packed in the later afternoons for work out sessions.
Cheers guys

Tai Life seems to be the best option, they should be open by now. I will start to go there myself again, after few months of laziness.
Patong Gym is cheaper but as you said, lot more people and you have to wait for equipment, that was never the case at Tai Life.

New owners have had the place closed for a week at Tailife without telling existing members in advance- not a good start. Pool has been closed for 14 days and all we got in return for the inconvenience was 1 month gratis. They now re-opening but have bunged the prices up already- they say there's no such thing as bad publicity but it doesn't seem a great start to a new regime. Time will tell but I'll still be using it.

Simbo, that's not good news mate. Bad advertising "IS" bad for business when you're in a small town like Patong. So, how much are the fees now?
I would have expected at least 1 month gratis plus an extra one for inconvenience. I believe that may have been better advertising, apologizing and goodfaith to your current and valued customers...
Not all businesses think the same though...

Also to be honest TaiLife will live or die on its long term members.. Some business can survive on location over service (Like a Rio perhaps) but as they have a member base, then piss them off and you have little left.
And a bad rep sticks here..

So, I see from their website the platinum membership is 1,800 per month if paid one year in advance, plus the 3,000 joining fee. Is this the rack rate, or can you negotiate a discount, like most things in Thailand?

Aaahh, good thread. This was something I forgot about. When I was in Patong in June/July, I went to ThaiLife and got their price sheet. Since I can pay 800 baht just up the street from my house, I found their prices to be too steep (maybe that makes me a cheap charlie, but I can live with that). I just checked out the Bow-Flex system ($900) and UPS will deliver. So this is now on my shopping list.

The choices of gyms on Phuket is still limited but much better than a few years back. Patong Gym is great in the morning but not worth the bother after 4pm. It would be my gym of choice if they turned on the a/c. Fit Club is more of a fun gym than for a serious workout and, as said earlier, it is for sale. TaiLife has been taken over by people who know nothing about gyms or fitness. From what I can gather they are more interested in turning the place into an upmarket members club with fine dining by the pool. The yearly rates have gone up but not too much so it will keep the CC away. The upside is that the gym is never that busy so you don't have to wait for anything. Thai women get in at a cheap rate. If you don't want to commit to a year then I would wait as I have heard that California Wow! are coming to town (I asked them and they said that Phuket was in there future plans). Juncelyon, perhaps? Outside of Patong there is the newly opened Kathu Fitness Centre (very Thai), Easy Fitness near Central, a new one at the Boat Lagoon, Club Asia in Phuket Town (excellent), and another new one up Bang Tao way. You pays your money, you takes your choice.
