Grief at Airport Immigration today

...and this was trying to LEAVE the country.

Couple of weeks ago I got a 10day extension to my 30day stamp. The officer at Patong Immigration made some sort of mistake when doing it and TIPPEXED over it in my passport, then stamped OVER the tippex and completed my 10day extension with his signature and stamping the expiry date with his red ink stamp. I took it that this was ok and he knew what he was doing and didn't think anything of it.

This afternoon I'm going through immigration at the airport heading for KL. The officer takes my passport into the office then tells me to go in the office. The officer in there points at the stamp and says "cancel" several times. I try explaining to him that I got the extension in Patong and I'd paid 1900baht. They ask me for the receipt. Who the hell keeps receipts! I don't and said I didn't have it and had thrown it away.

Then he calls in another officer and there's lots of conflab and looking at me. Clearly they are thinking that I've doctored it myself and having looked at it I could sort of see why because it does look a mess in my passport. So I said I'd complained to the officer in Patong what he'd done in my passport but that he'd said it would be ok and why couldn't they call Patong to confirm it or look it up on a computer. Of course it's sunday and Patong office isn't open and they said they didn't have access to a computer!

Then they call in 2 Air Asia reps and there's more talk and pointing at the stamp. Meanwhile the flight is being called. Then yet another officer comes in and there's more talk and showing him the stamp. While all this is going on I'm thinking what the hell are they going to do if they convince themselves the stamp is fake. Fine me 10 days overstay?...bang me up for overstaying?...not let me leave to go get another visa? I'm in with them almost 1/2 an hour before one of them makes a call on a mobile to someone and finally I get told, ok I can go.

Anyway I made it to KL but now I'm worried am I going to go through all this again tomorrow when the Thai Embassy here see that mess in my passport and any other immigration officer in the future

...and the moral I guess is to keep the receipt for the stamp in your passport until the stamp expires.

So I'm staying in one of the budget hotels near Sentral...it's monsooning down. Anyone tried any of the "massage" places round here. There's some dodgy looking geezers at the entrances, can't see the girls, and not sure I want to venture in!! Is it safe to????

European aristocrat dies in notorious Thai jail Independent, The (London) - Find Articles

Could have been a lot worse than a few days overstay.. A Crown prince was caught this year messing with his stamp.. Sent him to Klongprem and twice deny bail.. he died in there !!!

Cause of death could be chalked up to 'Thai Penal system on soft Euro aristocrat' I would guess..

Ended up dead in jail, just to save a few hundred Baht, and a minute or two of his time at the airport.

I was late a few days on my exit visa once. Just paid a small perdiem at the airport and off I went. I forget if the fine was 100 per day or 500 per day, but, either way, not worth dying for.

I would day that the cause of his death was "damn foolishness." A natural process of culling out the idiots from the herd. Perhaps he was inbred.

BTW, never heard the word "tippex" before. What does it mean?

Its the white gunk that typists use to cover over their mistakes and then re-type over.

Similar thing happened to me but with Vietnam immigration. I had a multiple entry visa but when I departed HCM City for a short trip to Cambodia, the twit stamped 'Expired' on my passport visa page (I wasn't paying attention). So when I came back, they wouldn't let me back in!! WTF? After arguing with them they finally agreed the guy had made a mistake and they 'tippexed' (we call it White-Out) over the Expired stamp. I thought that was the end of it, but when I arrived back in Canada, immigration gave me the third degree and asked me why I had used White-Out in my passport!! They eventually believed my story and let me back into my country. Now I pay close attention to what immigration officers do to my passport!!

So what should they do?

OK, now I am courious. Does anyone know what an immigration or custom's officer should do if they make a mistake instead of using "White-Out" or "Tippex"?

Obviously, customs officials worldwide go bananas when they see it.

Cancel the stamp/visa and reissue a new one. Can totally understand the potential problem caused here.

Went to Embassy this morning. Only 2RM on the Putra LRT to AMPANG PARK station which is the nearest then 10 minute walk. Got there about 0945. Long queue already...about 30 in front of me. Got inside about 1010 and made the right decision to go straight into the office where you get one of the waiting customer" numbers...no.75 for me and the ticker was only on no.15 :-( Make sure you do go get your number as soon as you're past the checkin at the gate because some people hang around outside the office first filling in their form not knowing about the waitlist number so you get to jump past 10 or so.

Finally my turn at 1200...took about 1 minute...RM100 handed over for single entry 60day tourist visa....why so CHEAP!!?? Signs around said 2 entries RM200. Visa applications only taken Mon-Fri 0930-1130. Pick up next day 1130-1230.

So now I'm up at Genting Highlands. RM7.30 from Sentral for 1 hour coach to Genting Skyway then 20 minutes up to the top of the mountain in the cablecar. Got a complimentary room and now heading off into the casino :-)

Sorry to hear about your trouble, and thanks for the advice about keeping the reciept.

I just got a sixty day tourist visa from the Thai Consulate in Vancouver. Costs $40 Canadian, and I figure that it could save a lot of hassle.

I read a sign in BKK airport stating a change in the overstay policy. Not knowing the old policy, here is the new one: 1 day - no charge. 2 days - 1000 baht. Each additional day 500 baht. Reading between the lines it looked like the fine has always been 500 baht per day, but now there is a one day chance to get out free of charge.

There is a sign up at departing immigration saying there is no fine for being one day over the 30 on your stay.

So no prob

It was 200 baht/day before for overstay and I think you had to pay even for just one day, which dont seems to be the case anymore.

The maximum limit is still same, 20,000 baht. So theoretically you could overstay for years and still pay just 20k, but it is still a criminal thing to do so and if you get involved with police you will be the bad guy because of your overstay, even if you did right or wrong.

Not to mention the possibility of the big red stamp in your passport. Re- Entry to Thailand forbidden

No first day was always free at Don Muang.. At land borders they hit you on day one but on the international air hop you always had one day free so no change in billing system but they do now charge 500 baht per day overstay.

Also you do not get blacklisted for overstay IF you get to the immigration yourself.. If the police catch you on route your in much more shit but with immigration it can only be a max 20k baht fine.. One of my mates is on about 3 months OS at the moment (getting it fixed) and I know a couple of guys who have done multi year overstays..

One guy who was on about 1 year overstay actually paid an immigration guy to go with him to the airport (HKT) so that there would be no cop issues and then did his 20k and flight out..
