Question Internet Providers in Phuket

Hi everyone. I'm officially moving to Phuket next weekend. My husband is going to Dubai for a year contract and we don't have internet yet. We have the phone line and phone.

My husband said that TOT is the only provider that can give us internet. Is this right? They've been really lazy about getting around to it. Our house is in Cherngtalay, Baan Term Fan, if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance for your help.

If your phone is from TOT then you have to order from them.

Another option is to order a phoneline from TT&T and get inetrnet from them, if they have lines available in your area.

Or find out if the new air access works in your area, from CAT, you need a card that cost ~15000 baht and then 1300 baht/month for a 600-800 kbps wireless connection.

Cat Wireless Sierra card

CAT WIRELESS CARD FOR SALE-
Well my husband and I bought the CAT card a month ago and we have not been impressed with the speed, but then again, it's the whole island that lacks it. The nice thing is that we can access internet from anywhere. Now we live in Chalong West and will be switching to Satellite, so if anyone wants to buy our EV_DO Card, email me laclisque@hotmail.com- The CAT office said that some areas are faster than others- Chaofa west is not a fast area- good luck

What price ??

Interested if bargain.. Not otherwise as I suspect these will rapidly devalue as people want to move on and they hit the market..

You are paying the lower 590 per month contract and not the older 1390 ??

Hmmm... I'm not sure we're talking about the same card. Mine is (rumored to be) free until April 2007 and 1200 a month thereafter unlimited. Of course the contract is flexible and can be cancelled anytime at no charge, so if there is a promotional offer, you are free to change. As for the bargain, I will consider any respectful offer. laclisque@hotmail.com

Same one.. The deal is now reduced 590 per month for the same airtime for new subscribers (what I was offered last week).. Free until April.. I asked about the price difference and they say this is the 'new' offer..

Sure the deal can be cancelled but as you cannot use your own hardware (even if you buy a new aircard thats the 100% same online) and HAVE to buy thiers that costs 16k, it would seem hard to convince them to 'turn on' a card (to get the good deal) without the 16k purchase.

Maybe they will.. But not a risk I would be happy with until I hear from CAT themselves. I will ask.

Typical Thai planning and systems tho.. No one knows really where they stand, is resale possible, who pays what tarriff, can accounts be transferred ??

There is another option which a friend of mine tried and works according to him successfully. Same system as the CAT card but then a phone which works with the wireless system. For internet, just plug phone via USB cable. Phone costs 4.000 Thb (in contrary to the 16.000 card..) and I believe free access untilo February and after that 1290 thb per month.
Sounds to me like a decent deal and even a bgood back-up option. Will most likely purchase it this week and will report after that.

Same system different hardware.. Tops out at 240kbps and more like >150kbps in less than perfect conditions..

Also price reduced to 590 baht for new subscribers per month and as you say free until feb..

They were unable to give me any info on how the calls are priced (international / local etc) over that which I thought a bit mad.. Surely they have a cellular tariff card ??

My buddy opted for this as it was much easier for a desktop.. Works as advertised but not the full speeds of the aircard..

You can try CAT ADSL.

Problem is speed is all over the place. I am getting anywhere from 40 KBps to 220 KBS (~.3 - 1.6 Megabit). I think they have a lot of users sharing. I am going to try and see if it is possible to get on a switch with a lower user share ratio.
