Internet connection mega slooooooow

2 nights ago we had a power surge/cut that lasted just a second or so. Everything went off but came back on almost immediately. Since then my internet connection (TOT) has been so slow it's unusable. It's back to the internet shops. Is anyone else having problems? Or could the surge have damaged something in my computer. I'm not a technophobe. Comp itself works fine but not internet. Tried deleting cookies and internet files but that's made no difference.

Try to power off the router/modem, wait a few seconds, and power on again.. Sometimes its all it takes.

If this is not working might be worth to test with another router/modem of same brand.....might also be linked to a loss of parameters during the line cut...

there are some information (parameter) in your modem/router that are required for the connection. One of those might have lost or altered during the power cut...Hard to figure out few thousand kilometers away....

You may have well fried your modem in the power surge ... this has happened to me many times - I juts take it back to where I signed up for my ADSL and they switch it for anotehr one - free . Even surge protectors sometimes dont work - best when there is a storm to switch everything off and unplu your phone lines and power leads.

Ditto with my telephone ... I go though a new phone every other month.

I'll give that a go thanks and take it to TOT.

I switched off the modem overnight and now I don't get a connection at all even though all 4 lights come on. I get a message saying "You might not be able to access some network resources. This problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer."

So I clicked on "Repair" and get "Windows is taking the following action. Renewing your IP address" then get "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed. "Renewing your IP address"!

Your routers DHCP seems not to be working, or your network card died on you

do you know the IP from your router? then set your ip of the NIC manually and look at the status of your router that way.

What kind of router?

Have you spoken to your ISP, is their end at fault.

Powersurge could fry it happend to me once.

Depending on what type of router you are using you should have a config and management interface usually acessable through your web browser. You need to check your settings they may have been reset for some reason.

Last 2 posts, thanks but that all means nothing to me. I'm a complete numpty when it comes to technical stuff. I'll try taking the modem to TOT first.

Also forgot to mention it appeared to fry my monitor too. Had to go and buy another one. Power light came on and could hear the computer booting up but nothing came up on the screen :-(

Ouch ok I guess if you still have a CRT, you should at minimum have some sort of surge protection.

Heh LOS thanks buddy, last night read your problems and thought 'heh I'm okay' this morning everything is taking a week to load, had to wait 5 minutes before being able to post this little thank you message.

Couple of weeks back it was TOT that wa shaving the problem and my computer couldn't find the server thought I had big prob but when telephoned them they said ther storm had affected their server and not mine, glad you are also a computer numpty, thought I was the only one on the island.

Welcome to the NumptiesR-US Club If you've had problems in Kamala too sounds like a TOT problem then. Couldn't take my modem to them today as it's Kings Birthday closing. At least Dialup is working ok but slow.

Hmm does not sound good...your monitor if CRT should be pretty good protected...you could have all sort of problems ...could also be a M-board failure.....

Hope you have luck with your new modem.....else ill be in Phuket in 2 days, and can be rented for a few beers

Might be taking you up on that

Dodger, are you back up to speed yet? I took my modem to test into the TOT office in Patong yesterday but they say there aren't any engineers in Patong and I have to go to TOT in Phuket town!

what name is on the modem? is it a router (ALWAYS ON) or is it a modem (you make a connection when you start the pc and internet use)

Tomson Speedtouch

I presume because dialup is working ok that it must be my modem that's knackered? Anywhere in Patong I can buy another one or will I have to go to Phuket Town?

BB you may have problems today - the remnats of typoon Durian blowing though and patchy connection today.

TT&T has improved in last 3 weeks - basically now I have TOT as backup. Finding TOT very slow and not so stable as I'd like.

Is a usb modem i would say. Would allways advise a router modem combination. But will copy some info on the speedtouch in a PM on monday to see what you can try step by step. A wireless router/modem is the better choice for the future though as you can work anywhere and they are not to expensive.

The speedtouch modem is loads better than the really crappy hyundai reject they used to give away..

Just because dialup works doesn't mean that your lines not screwed.. ADSL works on a very different system and dialup working or not is really not relevant..

If the modem is responding to pings and serving webpages (its menus) I strongly suspect its not the modem.. TOT were horrible for me for months.. My buddys TT&T is awful right now.. Its just Thai networks..

Look in the network connection pages.. Is your line connecting at full speed ?? Look at the Db signal loss ?? If all these things are working (strong line, signal loss not to bad.. Post the results here) then its usually TOT servers.. Sometimes its not even the bandwidth or gateways but the name servers chocking.. super simple thing but again, TiT..

absolute right, but as I understand he is not that IT savey I will try to send him some steps to test step by step.

However in my experience, it is most likely a factory reset and reconfigure that will solve many problems

Erik, the issue here tends to be far more network provider than corrupted settings..

Its just the nature of the beast with Thai technical engineering..

if I got a dime for every call a user makes to his ISP stating that and it turning out to be a CPE problem I would be very rich.

You might be right, but that would be easy to test
