Thai moving to America
Just got some good news: After months of bureaucratic gear-grinding, my wife finally got her immigrant visa to the US!
Had the interview at the embassy in Bangkok today. The guy asked her one question (Do you speak English?), then busted my balls for ten minutes over whether I had a US domicile and could verify my income.
This will be my second time leaving Asia for the US. The first time, after four years in Japan, I hated it and ended up in Bangkok. This time though, I'm bringing Asian take-out back with me in the form of my lovely wife.
Being back in the US will be a little less boring when I can see all the Western weirdness through her eyes.

Congratulations! I know what you mean about that bureaucracy....the long wait for paperwork approval and then you still have to get approved at an interview. While people are still flowing in across the borders here everyday illegally. On my third time filing for another visa now....almost getting used to it.
It definitely is fun enjoying the new perspective from your spouse on the insanity of Americans.
Where in the US will you be living? The cold up here in the northeast can be a bit unbearable. ... "Why children not dead when wait for bus in the cold?"

We'll be in Seattle - also pretty cold and rainy.
The wife visited there for a couple weeks in November once. She couldn't believe the cold and thought she was going to die for sure. However she loved the colors of the leaves changing, and we've got dozens of pictures of streets that aren't clogged with cars and motorbikes. She really liked how clean and ordered it all was.

Thanks, K2.
Not really looking forward to landing there in the middle of winter, but circumstances require it. I suppose I can deal with a little snow after four years in the tropics.
We'll be back to Thailand soon though. The plan is to spend a year getting the US side of our lives in order. The ultimate goal being to enjoy the best of both worlds, spending May-October in Seattle (great summers there), then November-April in Thailand.

Snow in Seattle? Well! I never......
But, seriously, congrats on the move. Sounds wonderful. Especially the plan for Northwest summers and Thai winters. R-r-r-r--r-r-r....Can you hear the gears in my head turning?
If I am not being too intrusive, did you get a pre-nup signed? If so, was it prepared by a US attorney, and how did it go with getting her to sign it?

Thanks for the congrats! Yeah, I'm pretty happy to be heading back to the US after almost a decade in Asia. And it's going to be so much fun watching my wife figure it all out.
Regarding your pre-nup question. I thought about giving an answer - it's a topical topic - but it feels kind of weird to talk about such things on an internet forum (no offence intended, guys).

Yeah, man. I mean, I'm still going to complain about the Thai visa process (being under 50 yet not interested in working in Thailand), but helping my wife through the US visa HELL does put some perspective on the issue.
It took more than three months, what with extra time added for things lost in the mail. The cheapskates at the embassy never use EMS, even for important papers.

Yeah but now she can buy land there, basically have equal rights..
If there was a 3 month reciprocal process to get immigrant status then we can start talking about whose got the advantages.

Yeah, I sure won't miss the Thai bureaucracy.
But things I WILL miss:
Nai Harn beach and snorkelling at Ao Sane.
Cops without cars or radar guns.
Loy Kratong in Chiang Mai.
Som Tam (really!).
Bars full of slutty girls who can kick my ass at pool.

You won't have to miss som tam. We have all the stuff here to make it available in the asian food markets. Seattle is supposed to have a ton of great markets with lots of options for preparing thai food at home.

You know that's something that does kind of gripe me, does it not make sense to anyone that the street should run both ways...to me I think that would be the way things should be....it might even convience me to think about ever getting married again....I just don't get the whole thai governmental way of looking at things...you would think it would be a possitive move to give the farrang some rights once married to a thai.
