When i was out in Asia for 11 days i had a budget of gasp 600 gbp. All my accomodation was booked and flight from BKK to KL was booked to. I soon realised that 600 was not enough to go drinking heavily every night and spend go to Soi Cowboy/Nana every night... BUT i did realise that a few beers and the odd girl was ok and there was a lot of things to do in the daytime... And during the day i didnt spend much.... Infact when i came home i had change about 75 gbp...
On a long term trip i tend to agree with wylos it can be done and you dont need to have a great deal of money... BUT you will have to have quiet nights in sometimes... Eat where the locals eat...Maybe instead of going out you can buy a few cans of beer and take with you to your place. find cheap guest houses to sstay in. If you plan to travel about you will need to use trains in 2nd class cars rather than booking first class. Pattaya and Phuket wouldn't be best options ( lets face it the temptation to go to Bangla/Walking street will be high ) and accomodation in Patong might for say a week or so might be higher than you realisticaly want to pay unless you consider stayin in Phuket town (unsure on what they are like for guesthouses) rather than Patong for example but if you plan to go more to Issan, Central Thailand, Northen Thailand it will be manageable (and as wylos already said you cen get a bit cheaper in Cambodia and Vietnam)... You can do a lot in Thailand, see many temples, museums etc for cheap to nothing (Should you enjoy that sort of thing)... If you plan to do a lot of drinking and indulging with the women a lot 2k wont be enough. IMHO if you were doing a lot of drinking/women i think 6 weeks would still be very hard.
I'm in the middle of planning my holiday and without flights and hotels my budget is 130 euros per day. Which will cover my drinking etc. My internal flights are booked as well as my flights to and from Frankfurt. Accomodation, is in a sperate fund. This i think will be about right. infact i remember being in Patong on 50 gbp (hotel paid) and had a great time...
This is your holiday and you need to realisticaly think what you want out of it. Think hard about your budget for everything. Maybe put of your trip for a few months to save up a little bit extra. LOS will still be there

Also everyone is pricing up Patong and bar girls.. If he headed to KPG or Koh Tao, found a nice 400 baht beach bungalow.. Drank Sangsom cokes or those buckets they make.. Eat rice or the local flavors.. His budget would be ample..
To the OP.. As everyone has an opinion, you have to just give it a go.. Would it be better to have 3k or to have a emergency fund of a bit more.. Of course.. Is it possible to cane through what you have in a couple of weeks ?? Of course.. But you can have a very enjoyably holiday as long as you dont lose the plot.

I think the possible answer to you question has been given in many ways. Everyone needs, pleasures and spending habits are different. I do want to comment on the issue of saving without looking at the whole picture.
The amount of money you need to spend just to get there, lodging, food, local transportation, airport parking, etc. is likely to be the biggest expense, whether you are frugal or an average partier. This is especially true if the trip is shorter (which may not be the case of the OP). One should look at those base expenses and compare them to the "party/p4p" expenses. For the one who puts some priority on "party/p4p", it would be sad to spend the bulk of the money just to get there, only to have to cut down on the fun expenses.
We all go to LOS with different goals. My comments are mainly based on wanting to have a fair amount of "party/p4p" time. If the main goal is to enjoy scenic Thailand, the beaches, the locals and not so much the night life, obviously that paints totally different picture.
If you have a budget you should be somewhat clear on what you want to do.

Budget high- anything left over is there for emergency or bonus. Far better to have too much and some left over than run out part way through- remember life is not a rehersal, do it while you can

If you are not a guy who can squeeze a buck when he needs to or budget out his money, then I think that you would probably know that and plan accordingly.
For some guys, it just wouldn't be fun, if they weren't throwing a bit of cash around, and not worrying about how much they spend. For other guys, it is well worth it to make their money stretch a bit, especially if they are really party animals to begin with, so they can stay 2 months in paradise instead of two weeks for the same amount of money.
Different strokes for different folks. You just have to know what works best for you!
