You know marc26 i wouldnt complain either.
But my lifestyle right now doesnt allow that kind of luxury's, infact it never has! So for me thats one of the things i really like about Thailand - Id say it like Borat "The king of the castle" feeling, you know that feeling when you dont have to worry about money at all, for me that is paradise.
Its just my envy talking Marc
But Hey! i did find my dreamgirl, now i just need to become economicly independent too, that would be true happyness hehe.
Ill get it though just wait!

Like my mom, she was one of a kind. If I'd taken half of the advice she gave me my life would have been a lot easier. She took one look at my first wife and said "Don't marry her. She's not for you. It took me 7 years to come to the same conclusion.

Thanks for your two postings AT, I was sure there would be someone living a reasonable lifestyle for not too much money. I am doing an exploratory trip in mid April and was sort of aiming at around $USD1000/month. I am heartened by your 500 Euro which converts to around $USD650.
Where is Chalon? Is it a crappy or dangerous area or just out of the tourist area?

It is Chalong, and is away from the tourist area to the south east of Patong.
Google a map of Phuket and have a look

Thanks Dawsey,
I found Phuket maps: map of Patong Beach, Kata, Karon and Kamala and Chalong, but could not find a scale for the map. Do you know how roughly far it is from say, Patong beach to Chalong?
Is there a better map? I only have dial up so cannot use Google Earth.
Thanks, Chalong sounds nice from the description of it.

Well that depends on how you see it..
I got friends that got nothing and i got friends who got everything from doing nothing. And then i got friends who worked their asses off to get what they want.
I dont envy any of them.
As long as i have an enjoyable lifestyle and if i enjoy what i do it doesnt matter much to me if id be driving a Bentley or a Volvo, however right now, i dont even have a car
*ok, perhaps i envy the guy who was born rich a tad! but i wouldnt want to look like him!

Cost of living in Thailand.............Cook or eat out! Fnar Fnar!
Dodger spotted a bargain tonight in Kamalalala........House special in the..........Pizza Place!!!........Nice big prawn cocktail followed by a huge chicken breast in mushroom sauce, freedom fries and a fresh salad followed by a half litre bottle of.......I think it was Chang for 220 Baht (£3.20 - $6.40-ish)........Followed by four packets of bacon at 40 Baht a packet at the 7-11 on the way back which is about right for breakfast after a dip in the pool.........Me! Not the bacon as the other residents don't like me doing that!

If you click on Chalong inside the link you posted, there is a closer look at Chalong. Not living there I can only guess that its around 10-15 miles from Patong beach. Around a 20-30min drive IIRC.One of the local expats can give you more accurate info.

Thanks again Dawsey, I had done that and that's what prompted the map-scale question, but your estimate will do me just fine.
Being an older fart and not all that much into the bar scene, I suspect one of the quieter out of the way places will suit me better.
I spent a good deal of my life doing the "fall down drunk" thing, well almost and now my Liver and I are happy with just the occasional bout of naughtiness.

yep pretty close dawsey.....a good 30 minutes and probably the upper end of your mileage.........I've done that trip hundreds of times as its where the dive boats leave from.....Chalong Pier....
Not much nightlife around there..........and not easy or cheap to get a Tuk Tuk into Patong........so you'd probably do it on yer bike......but this has its own pitfalls in the state if the rd...........particularly if drinking.....and that's not to mention the greedy policemen

It was 20-30 mins from the chalong circle to patong. Now add another 10-15 minutes going in due to patong's one way system, sansabi being opened as a through street, and lack of sansabi parking. It takes about 10-20 minutes to get to Simon Caberet, after that it is a total guessing game on how long it will take to get around patong and find parking.
Problem is it is a tricky drive. Lots of hills and curves. Lots of dark areas. Lots of drunks on motorbikes. I know two people this month that have that were in accidents coming back. Resulted in 1 dead thai and 3 seriously injured. Moral issues aside, that will cost a few million baht to clean that up. Given all of the above, I'm looking for a driver for my bi-weekly play time.
The up side to living over on this side is it is a lot quieter. Lots of good bars for a quick drink with friends. Great restaurants for a reasonable price. 10 minutes to Central/Lotus/BigC. You are more likely to pop into phuket town, rawai, or kata for fun. Seems that if you live in patong you kinda get stuck there.
2 of my neighbors are patong refugees like myself. We're about the same age and all spent a few years in patong. decided it is better to have a good general quality of life and then just pop back into patong when you are in the mood.
So if like the poster said, you are not that interested in getting fall down drunk and hooking up every night, staying out chalong way could work very well for you. Otherwise best to stay in patong.

2 ways of going to Chalong from Patong:
-via Karon
-via Kathu

Via Kathu is a lot longer for most of chalong. Especially with the construction in Kathu near the university and Chaofa Rd. West construction.
There is a new road just south of Island Furniture that will by-pass most of Kathu and take you over near the bottom of the Patong hill. That will make the via Kathu route a lot more appealing.
In about two years there will be a new road that runs from near Wat Chalong/ TOT office to over the patong hill connecting into the south end of 50 year road. That will be really sweet!
The real bottleneck is patong. Need to get the new by-pass road open. Then keep the juncleyon lot open for all night parking.
