Good Food?
Ok, what about a subcategory dealing with resturants/food? Where are the good places? What places should we skip? Of course, decent Thai food is easy to find. But what about Italian, or Mexican, or Japanese, or Hungarian, ...., etc. Personally, I don't mind paying for a good meal, but I realy don't like it when they charge top dollar and then give me crappy food.

Mexican reccomendation
BBQ Hut. Its somewhere on the south-end on rat-u-thit.
Never actually been to the place, but we use them to order food for partys in the bowling league in Patong. Maybe someone else can specify location.
They serve some delicious mexican stuff

BBQ Hut is opposite side of the Road to Cristins - about another 300m further south.
They also hosted some Hash events - and can also recommend the Mexican faire there.
Italian - The pizza place in Soi Eric is pretty good - sure Hobbsy and Nicke can speak for other dishes.
Japanese - Oishi in the Index Living Mall (next to Big C) has a very good buffet for ~400 Baht/head - found it better than Zen (Central and Patong, Beach Road).

But be prepared for a zoo when the many tour buses unload. Once was more than enough for me.
Agree on BBQ Hut!

Im not a big pasta eater as I tend to find very badly cooked, but the two styles of penne that I have from this place is excellent.
For an India/tandor I can reccomend the Indian on the same soi as Harrys and Karlson. Its at the back and their Tandor oven is very very good! The Tandor chicken and lamb is excellent (imho), the only thing is the service is a bit off but not as bad as other higher priced restaraunts here.
I found the prawns at the prawn fishing place on Nanai 2 excellent and also very cheap too. But in the afternoon's the fly's can get on your tits because of the bait used for the prawn's. But very good place to go to at say 3 or 4am.
(Going to Sphinx tonight as Ive been told very good and then maybe 9th Floor when im back from Cambo!)

I have posted about his little Thai restaurant in another forum, but not too many of the members discuss Hkt and I got no replies on it. I thought perhaps some of you out there might have been lucky enough to have visited this little place.
It is a little mom & pop Thai place located on Phra Barami Road. I don't know the name. Starting on the corner of Bangla Road, if you go down Rhat-U-Thit Songroi Pi Road and take a right on Phra Barami Road it is located on the right hand side maybe 30 meters down. I went here several times with some Thai friends and the food they ordered was just oustanding (some of the best food I've ever eaten). This place usually doesn't open until the late afternoon, but it's open until very late. A great place for one of those late night meals.
Using the map link it would be located in grid B.
Map of Patong Beach by Thaiways
There is also another restaurant that comes to mind that serves great steaks. It is located on Thawiwong Road (the beach road) right past Banana Disco if you were walking from Bangla Road. They have the chefs cook the steaks right in the middle of the seating area. Sometimes they have a band play here, which can be too loud sometimes imo. Expensive but good.
Highly recommend a visit if you get the opportunity. Enjoy!
cheers,
dagul

The majority of the BMs probably don't get to Kathu to Phuket Town. Alot of great places to eat, large portions, and very inexpensive. Don't eat to much of a western diet so can not recommend any place. I would like to know of a good pizza place????

Food
Thanks for all thew information, everyone.
As for the BBQ Hut, I tried that once, but wasn't exactly impressed. I must have been there ona bad night. I ordered a Mexican dish of some sort, and it came to me partly cold and partly hot, as if someone had stuckit in a microwave that cooked unevenly.

If you're into American style, I can recommend Papa Joe's. They only do take-away (and deliver) but it is by far the best I've had in Phuket (Haven't tried the one in Soi Eric though). Sadly, they don't deliver to Kamala.
Hope it's ok to post the no:

I have yet been able to eat a good pizza in Thailand. They just cant get it right proportionally, either they put 2 kg's of cheese on it or they bake it with some kind of crap bread that is uneatable. I had a decent pizza once but never good, and that was at Loft in Central - BKK.
I guess there are not too many stone ovens around in Thailand.
Business idea anyone?

Well I'm not a huge fan of pizzas, but the ones cooked up at the end of Soi Eric are tasty

If we are expanding this food topic to all of Thailand - I had excellent wood oven baked pizza in Pattaya near the Areca Lodge. If you exit the Areca Lodge on Soi Dianna you would take a right & walk one block up (away from the beach). You will cross Soi Buakhao to get on to Soi Lengkee & it is on the right hand side opposite the Family Mart. It has a big sign in the front that says Wood Oven Pizza. Here is a map to help guide you.
thaihotels.com - map pictures of Areca Lodge, Pattaya, Thailand
I still remember it was my 1st visit to Pattaya & the 1st place I chose to eat at. I met some local expats there originally from Belgium. One of them looked like Santa Clause. When they knew it was my 1st visit to Pattaya they offered to take me around. 1st stop was Soi 6 (or Soi Boom Boom as they referred to it w/ thrusting hip action) to introduce the place to me. It was an interesting experience to say the least.
Anyways, great pizza!

As a great fan of good Mexican food, I will try anywhere. Ate at BBQ Hut one time, I felt it wasn't even mediocre....perhaps I should give it another try, but don't want to be disappointed again. As I grew up in the Southwest US, I am probably spoiled a little on the taste of truly good Mexican food.....maybe I like it a little more authentic than other people.

Bill, it wont measure to your standards I am sure.. I actually felt much of the texmex I eat better than mexican food I eat in mexico..
I go there and eat a fair bit (breaker mostly) as thier Thai is ok and I like the rancher omelettes and breakfast burritos.. Good ribs also.. Fair burgers (not FT's level).. However the mexican food is mexican-like really. It has to be taken for what it is.

I eat at Dons Very very often,
IMO The Western food is ok. not outstanding but I never got food poisoning there yet, but the Thai food is naff.
For Japanesse food I like the one on the top floor at Central. I would not recommend to eat Sushi late at night, just because the fish is well less fresh, and the chance of food piosoing goes way up. Never had a problem at this place but did at the other Japanesse joint in Central.
