Bar owner arrested last week

I heard that one bar owner was arrested last week. He have a bar on Bangla road and was celebrating his birthday. He changed the CD for the music and 4 plain clothes policemen walked to him and said happy birthday and then they arrested him.

He dont have work permit and is not allowed to change music in the bar.
He paid 100k for bail and he is waiting for the court, he might get deported.

I heard this from a friend of him and his gf told Ead the same.

I know this happened 8-9 years ago in Patong but havent heard anything like this for years until now.

When I was in Patts 4 years ago, I got friendly with a girl who had a hot sausage stall (big sausages). As a laugh I asked her to take a photo of me cooking at her stall - she looked worried and said no, ''incase police see you''.

Gotta feel sorry for this bloke though - wonder if he had been asked for a contribution to the policaman's fund, but forgot to pay?????? 4 plain clothes pouncing as he changes in a cd in 10 seconds??

Exactly right. If you happen to piss someone off and they know some mib, then this is a very likely scenario for them to get you back. Has happended before and will happen again. Without a WP you dont do a thing in the bar with the door open.

What was it in another thread where someone said that this exact thing was ridiculous, and my statement was wrong. Welcome to the real world.

If you're going to quote yourself, get it right

Well it seems like this guy may have not been minding his own business. Perhaps he just was pissing people off flat out. And he wasn't doing things above board.

Still feel like you made your point?

If you go looking for trouble, it'll find you here for sure. This guy didn't have a work permit, he did work tasks, and that's illegal. He was asking for a problem and it found him. Real simple. No big conspiracy.

Seems that my problem is that I'm just not bitter like you. But that's a good problem that I'll keep.

The conclusion is, if you have a bar dont do any work inside it and let your Thai staff do things. Its by law illegal to work in a bar without work permit.

I dont think we will see this often, but better stay safe.

I have actually seen Nicke work at his bar.

He points at a customer and tells the staff get him another beer.

He actually lifts his hand almost shoulder high to do this.

This thread has been educational for me. I am now aware of the rules, and it helps explain why I've seen so many expat owners sitting around bars doing not much!

Exactly Nicke, I don't even give my friends or customers glasses to the staff for them to get a fresh one as this could be seen as working. I never go around behind the bar.

Too easy to have someone pissed off at you and cause some trouble. Your bar may be busier than the ones next to you so the owners, staff or friends of the owners can cause trouble for you using MIB. Not worth the problems, so just let your staff do what they're employed to do.... Most of the time, the hostesses (ladybar girls) will help out too if it's busy or you need anything.

It's unfortunate that you can't get a wp to work in a bar.
I assume it would be good for business, having the freedom to protect your
investment "hands on"...
Would be nice to be able to chat with a farang bartender from time to time.
(from the other side of the counter)

They can and many do. Many don't for various reasons. But nearly all have the good sense not to cross the line if they don't have a WP. You can't have it both ways.

Even with a WP you can hardly do anything in your own bar!!

Bartending - serving drinks, etc - all these kinds of job are restricted to Thai's only, all you are given a WP for is to manage the place! (as owner)

I dont think you can can you ??

WP's are certainly not given for 'bar work'.. Now gaining a WP as the MD is one thing.. But you would still be in violation of the WP to then be doing bar work in your bar.

Part of the reason many bar owners dont get a WP is it doesnt actually entitle them to do any bar work.. That was my understanding.

Why invest in a country that makes it so difficult with BS rules, enforce them only when it is screw someone or on the take, and have a government that does at will with no recourse for a business owner....

No thanks.... I will invest my money somewhere...

I think that was shark club and they got him with old nasty pictures.
For sure what happend wasn´t correct but from my point of view the owner
felt to save. He thought nothing can happen to him

Well everyone who invest there should know what could happen and accept it or not. These are all no secrets and you accept it or not.
Anyway everyone who complain about deleted stuff in this forum or complain the new rules should be given a link to this thread.

Patong's second sadest day (after the tsunami) -

Phuket Gazette - online English newspaper for Phuket, Thailand, with daily news, classified ads, yellow pages, business listings, upcoming events, event calendar, phuket events

Hope one day Seduction will replace the same feel - but very hard to re-create the atmosphere Shark had .

He ran back to Canada blowing a 32 million baht investment so I was told.. And yes they were old pics..

Dont want to mess around with the nightclub owners here. Being the best club in town and farang run was too much for them.. Its taken from then until now for anyone to give it another farang run go.

On my first couple of days of my visit, I was in a well known Aussie run bar not on Bangla, when one of the girls asked how long i was there for. When I said why, she asked if id want to work that night and when they needed me in future. To which I replied I don't have wp, im on Tourist visa.

The BIG boss came over and said it was ok, that i was 'able' to work there and the police never bother them. I still declined the offer as reading the protected occupati0ons when looking in to a wp before. Bar and any work involving the bar is strictly prohibated.

Still, i've seen non THai's work in that bar before, including the manager. So there must be ways around it.............. 10 000b can buy alot of tea!

The problem with this is that it does work.. right up until it doesnt !!!

And if you get some kind of life built up here.. The fact we are always facing the chance of a deportation and the big red stamp.. Is a concern.

Just think what would happen for a family man living hers position.. Arrest.. Detention.. Deportation.. Family.. Child.. Relationship.. Business.. Visa's (to get family to you).. Bank accounts.. Possessions.. Car payments.. house.. and other stuff..

Dont forget that if the green eyed monster is working in the next door bar.. And he pays them 10,001 baht.. Then 10k doesnt win..

Was on Phi Phi a month a go and although there's not many bars there, the one's that were were farang owned and run. One of them even had Swedish waitresses with no Thais working there whatsoever which I found unbelievable.

Like K2 said there are restricted occupations. I think it comes down to what you have listed as your duties and approved by the labor department. You can serve drinks, change music, or what ever else if it is done under the banner of "training". Training is an accepted role of a manager. I have friends that have had that approved.

Even with a WP, it's still better to keep a low profile.

getting arrogant

From what I heard, the shark guy make himself very unpopular. He was more that full of himself and thought he was above the law. That is hearsay, as is most of these stories.

Sishow's owner guy also sounds like he was getting too big in his own mind. Like he had some sort of special power. A good friend of mine who runs a big bar is going down this path and I am concerned for him.

Part of being successful here is keeping a low profile. Our favorite resident bar owner is a great example of just blending in. One of the original owners of Jungcelon was this old thai guy that rode around on an beat-up motorbike with a little briefcase in the front basket. Unless you were in the know, you'd never know he as developing a multi-billion baht shopping & hotel complex. A lot of the richer thais in phuket are very low key. Farang who get arrogant and start breaking the rules are just painting a bullseye on their head.

I think it was far more to do with the fact that he ran the best (by far) club and most profitable tourist business in town.. It wasnt his ego IMO it was the locals who couldnt stand it.
