Red Licence Plates in Thailand
Hey Guys,
Just recently bought a new car. Was wondering if anyone knows the details about the red plates you get when you first bring the new baby home. I've heard you can drive at night, you can drive outside phuket, you CAN'T drive at night and you CAN'T drive outside phuket.
Does anyone have any facts on this as my gf and I were looking at heading to Hat Yai next week and don't want any problems.
Cheers 'n beers
Dingo

I was lead to believe that was the initial 6 month "no you can't export this new car at vast profit" number plate and that at the end of the period you get the white one and everything is OK! Not sure of daily driving restrictions!!!
I'm sure Sef will know!

Facts.
It is Illegal to drive your car at night with this Red Plate.
You must record details of every journey you make in the car in a note book to be kept in the car.
Don't know if you can legally drive outside Phuket or not.
Reality
You should be able to get your proper plate in 2 days.
I have never heard of anyone being busted for driving at night with a Red Plate. I drove my car for about 2 weeks no problem and a bike for 5 months, got stopped by the police for no helmet and stuff at night, nothing said about a red plate
Plenty of People by new cars in Bangkok and drive them down to Phuket never heard of anyone getting busted.
Hassle your car supplier for the proper plate. Call your insurance company and ask if you are insured if you drive with the red plate to Had Yai

If your vehicle is registered in Phuket, or anyother province other for that matter, other than Bangkok, then you cannot "legally" drive out of that province on red plates. If your vehicle is registered in Bangkok, then you can drive anywhere on red plates.

When I bought my car I had red plates for 3 months and had no problem, I was not even aware of these rules and nobody told me or us. We just waited for the dealer to call us to pick up the real plates. I used the car at all times of the day, not outside Phuket thought.
One motorbike purchase lately, it took 5-6 months to get the real plates, althought I have heard those are only allowed by law for maximum 3 months. Once again, it's the dealer who have to call you when they have for you.

Sounds like a rearly enforced law, if it exists.

Its another one of those 'laws on paper' tho I was told that the red plate gives police an instant T money on the spot fine if they see you at night.. The other thinking is if you can afford a brand new car you can afford to give them a couple hundred baht for being out at night or out of province..

Had my red plates on my first pickup for 6 months, only got stopped once and the police just told me to get the new plates soon, so I did.
I drove at night regularly and never got stopped once even though I live just past Chalong Circle/Police Station. Might be differenet in Patong but you should be fine elsewhere.
Don't think you can go off the island though!

When my truck had red plates (bkk plate but bought in phuket?) I got stopped at checkpoints in Phang Nga and outside Trang at night, just smiled and spoke English to them and they sent me away as they spoke no English. They were talking about the red plates though. I also crossed the border to Malaysia with red plates, when I asked one official at the border and pointing at the plate, he just said no problem.
However as we all know it might just depend on who pulls you over...
Kind regards

I bought a car near the end of November. Dealer asked me if I wanted the white plate right away, or did I prefer to wait until 2007. If I understood him, issuing the plate after the new year somehow made the car worth more because the car would be registered in 2007 instead of 2006. 3-4 weeks later, the plates came in. The dealer took care of everything.
I'm not sure if I had BKK plates as I was closer to PathumThani than BKK. I drove down the east side of the gulf as far as Patts. I went down the west side as far as a little south of Hua Hin. Then throw in the river Kwai and Ayuttahya. I was never stopped at night. No problems except for the steering wheel being on the wrong side of the car. =)

I bought and had it registered in Phuket. It had BKK plates. Drove all over, at all times, and outside of Phuket for 3-4 months. No issue. Never stopped.
Then got the white plates and didn't feel special anymore

But what happens if you get into an accident either at night or out-of province? Will you be considered "driving illegally"? (e.g. by the insurance company)

That's my concern Sundancekid. I believe it would be considered driving an unregistered vehicle. I think I'll just have to wait until the white plates come in...

That is exactly what you'll find will happen. Everyone is very happy to knowingly go about breaking all these laws, yeah so there not really enforced, but when something does go wrong, be prepared for all the shit that goes with it.

This really weird.
Do you pay for the registration when you get the red plates or the white plates because if you pay for the red one should you not have the same rights as getting the white ones when available for free. Or do you pay extra for white ones. Wouldn't you think rego is rego no matter what colour. I don't know the laws over there however when it comes to this.

Just had the gf speak with the dealer. There are two kinds of "books" you can get when you get your red plates. Apparently one "book" doesn't allow you to drive outside the province when a different "book" does allow you to.
We apparently have the book that does allow us to drive outside of Phuket however we are not allowed to drive the vehicle at night. Again, "That's Thailand" LOL.
No problem, just wanted to know and I role with it...
