I think people change and adapt to their environment(s), but they certainly do not give up their identity, when in a different place. Two different subjects really.
I spent 6 months in Thailand just recently and wanted to write a nice trip report about what I found different/same, but all the subjects that I found worthy of posting about after two months in country didn't seem interesting to me anymore after the 6 months were done because I was partially acclimated already. And, therefore found it hard to produce...
I can't even wonder what happens to those who are in Thaland for several years...., but it is a valid point to discuss. People do change when in Thailand for a while as K2 states, and it is a necessary condition to survive (at least comfortably) in any environment....

From personal experience, I think, living overseas (NOT holidaying overseas) does change a person. But I believe, it doesn't change your personality all the way.
Living in Australia for about 2 years in total, I have become more assertive, but I am still quiet compared to my Australian female counterparts, I believe.. (probably language barrier is the main problem here )
Maybe our children/grandchildren will adopt the local way 100% if we let them mingle with the locals, but certainly not us.

mm.. sometimes, their tones sounds intimidating for me --> especially the young females. The older they get, the less intimidating their tones when speaking, imo.
Woohooo.. Meat Pie, cut off its top, squeeze in the tomato sauce+some chili sauce, and put back the top- before eating the pie.. mmmmm...
My husband has it without the chili sauce though

With chili, mixed with tomato sauce and the meat inside the pie, it'll be yummier
Ah ya.. 'screech'.. that's the word I was looking for... But many Asian women have high pitch voice too and not sexy, imo.
A sexy voice, is a deep one (low frequency), which most (unfortunately!) smokers have.

Thanks for posting that. I've tried once or twice and got nowhere.
The effect of yours must have lasted almost 4 or 5 posts!
Anyway, I have wondered a lot myself about the difference between 2 weeks holiday when you can drink every night, spend recklessly on anything etc lie on a beach, get massages( ;-) ) during the day and what happens if you go to live there full time. It must be a totally different experience, especially if you don't get a job like teaching English. Do people go nuts with boredom? Is it frustrating having so many bars, girls etc around but always having to watch the budget?
Personally, I think a 3 month test would be in order before committing full time.

i can only go by my experience of living there for about a year
i knew i would be heading back to work, but i thought it was going to be 2 years and not just 1 year
i wasnt concerned about money, so i only had a soft budget. i didnt want to go over 160k baht a month
so my experience is completely different than if i had to watch my money
i never got bored by the way

So how did you spend your a) days and b) nights?
Nice as it sounds you can't do holiday drinking 7 nights a week and nothing to watch on Thai TV

We do have cable TV with all channels, sport, films etc.
Answering your question we do everything you do at home but when we decide to go out and play it is in the likes of Bangla Road. Also spare time can be filled with all kinds of sports, water sports and any other interests you have, I am never bored and hardly have enough time in the day to do half the stuff I want to.
Cost wise you live good but learn how to live more local (cheaper), and never go out and spend like a holidaymaker.

i actually took a bunch of TV series dvd's like seasons of 24 and such
again, even though a year is a long time, i knew it wasnt permanent so alot of the ex-pats that are there for a more extended stay would have a different outlook

i know its different from living full time in thailand, but over a fairly short period i returned 5 times upcountry, and it was interesting/shocking to watch the general downturn in the health of most expats i met.
alcohol, boredom and lack of direction, seemed to be a common link between many, the happiest seemed to be those with non-drinking/mongering habits and maintained a fairly disciplined routine.
an expat at the start, wearing neat clothes, holding logical conversations etc, to walking around barefoot in town, drunk early in the day, abusing thais, selling off his car, becoming involved with the little farang cliques around town, just one example.
i know thailand is still a haven for many who have nowhere left to go, but the lack of self discipline seems to be their downfall.
on the patong side of things, i suppose is the bar owners level of drinking/late nights, frustration at various thai officaldom etc, many seem to adapt very well to the life but others seem to rush into alcohol haze.
for other expats with little to do, surely they to must maintain a discplined routine to certain extent to ward off the health consequences.

It sounds like if you can't discipline yourself very carefully, don't do it, and pick where to live very carefully.

i completely agree that some ex-pats do spiral down, but i think only the ones who were inclined to, no matter where they were
i will honestly say that i drank 5-6 nights a week while living there but i also did alot of stuff during the day, even if it was only hanging out at the pool

yes Paul, i agree totally that if their propensity to live in a way not condusive to health was part of their of character, then it will of course come to the fore in the land of sunshine, booze and perhaps the company kept (people of a similar nature)
i drink far more in thailand than i do in oz, and have set a start time and finish time for drinking, very rarely in town mostly at the house.
