Has Living Here Changed You?

Just finished Stickmans latest weekly ...

Made me think a bit - I guess living here has made me change and adapt. I don't think I have adapted to Stick's level as I don't have to deal on a daily basis with Thai's as he does, but certainly felt a good degree of appreciation for what he's written.

I've Changed, I've Gone Native

Also near the end MTB gets a mention ..

"Over the years I have seen a number of girls with physical impediments working in the bars. Those who spring to mind are the 6 fingered girl at a beer bar off Bangla Road in Phuket (was it Mai Thai Bar?)"

i am sure i will be in the minority but i find the story to be a little pathetic

i think it is great to adapt to one's enviroment and take on some cultures, but to give up your identity sounds sad to me

saying that he cringes when he sees tourists-to me that sounds like a sad old ex-pat who is being judgemental. they were probably 2 kids making out

i understand what he is saying, but i think people like K2, Lil, ATMWalking are more like i would want to emulate. they observe the culture, adapt to it, without giving up their whole identity

6 finger girl at MTB? Must of been before my time!

As for adapting! I hope if I ever am fortunate(?) enough to ever live in Thailand, like some other lucky people here, I hope that I would observe and appreciate the Thai culture but not lose or make massive changes to mine.

Still, what would I know? It is massivly different to being there 2 or 3 months!

Yes, the girl in question is happy married and have a daughter now, just few months younger than Nathalie. She have a kind of small extra thumb on her hand, otherwise looks perfect.

Paulie.....Paulie..Paulie...........

Hopefully we changes when we decide to live in another country for a long time......if we dont change, or dont like the way of living there, then better go back home.......
If I moved to US (or any other country), I had to accept the way people are living there, their propaganda, their way of dealing with problems........

I personally like when some thai's refer to me like 'lung', 'pii don' or similar that means they (maybe pretend) look at me with respect.
My staff in Thailand shows me much more respect than any of my staff ever did back home........and I have to say it have changed me a bit as well........
Im much happier to give a small bonus here than I was back home....

Anyway, we probably cant change our roots, but its easier to fit in if we changes a little bit

Geir

Don't really understand what you are saying there Paul, as Geir, I too read your post different and was thinking of course you should adapt to your new environment but that is not what you meant is it???, how do you mean not loose your identity? cos I read the Stick report and thought, yeah I've changed in almost all the ways he mentions but am not concerned, I like these changes, not done them on purpose, but I'm still English and always will be, I will never ever be accepted as a thai nor want to, is that what you meant? I havn't lost my national traits but some of my personality and thoughts have definately changed and I think for the better.

It is strange that Stickman highlighted what I consider to be mostly negative characteristics. Perhaps not strange as it is stickman. There are as many positive characteristics as well.

As with most places, you need to balance the good and filter the bad. I had some experience before working with a very successful US company. At the time I felt that 50% of the company culture is what made it off the charts successful. 50% made the people complete assholes. But it was hard to figure out which was which and not just go all in.

It can be the same here. Like K2 I don't work with Thais, so I can be selective with who I interact with. But sure being here has changed me, but hopefully for the better.

The funny thing about his article was at the top talking about the top earners. I thought he was at his most thai there. It isn't that he is too local. It is that he is unqualified and unambitious. Rather than better himself and seek higher earnings, he invents a reason that thais into fate and is unchangeable. That to me is a very thai trait and one that I most dislike. I believe we can all work to better are selves are all opportunities are out there for those that take it.

But not a fan of stickman. I like that mangosauce guy much better.

Actually i understand where this is comming from. Why should you give up your own idenity when living in another country? It does not matter if it is Germany, America or Thailand. I have been living in Germany for well over a year and have adapted to the way things work out here, but i will not give up my own identity.

I agree with Marc26's sentiments that he sounds like a "sad old ex-pat who is being judgemental".
