Living and Working

An opportunity has arisen to live and work in Thailand. So I started thinking, what kind of money is good money in Thailand.

There have been a lot of threads on Thai wages and expat budgets and things like that but nothing really on what a foreign worker is earning.

My field is construction management and project management and the firm is foreign owned based in Thailand.

I know that were I working for a Canadian firm on a specific project in Thailand, salary would be based in Canadian dollars and would run for the term of the contract.

I guess specifically, they've asked me for my salary expectations and I'm having a hard time coming up with a number. Obviously $100k per year in Canada gives a certain lifestyle, what amount in baht would be the equivilent living in Thailand?

I don't see why you are pondering this question. You are entitled to what you are making in your current position, plus a 10-20% hardship allowance for being in Thailand regardless if the company is headquartered in Thialand or Canada, or wherever. Remember, you are the one taking the risk of moving overseas...

But, to answer your question specifically, I would say that 120,000 baht per month would be about the same lifestyle (in living arrangements anyway) to making C$100,000 per year.

It sounds like the Thai firm is just trying to cut you down to local expenses, but I wouldn't give in regardless of your desire to live in Thailand. That is what they are playing you on...

Agree with Tanman.. For non local hires its usually home salary + hardship + moving allowance and even + a set amount of return flights per year, accommodation, school fees for parents of children that age etc etc.

However if your motivated to be here then its a bargaining game.

Things to think of would be what area would you be in BKK has some premium over other regions.

^^^ Wot they said.

I'm currently negotiating a full time post in BKK at UK salary + 10% + good housing allowance + car and driver + moving allowance + flights. It's the norm.

Lil,
I'm having trouble with your avatar. I've narrowed it down to Saddam hussein or Ron Jeremy. Who is it?

The smart guy was Sundancekid. It is Khalid Sheikh Mohammed the so-called mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks.
My guess was also way off.

Why would I ever expect them to be in the same place? Besides I do not think they look that much alike
... unless someone play Photoshop: The View From Here - back, crack or sack?
