Warning! Don't ride a motorbike at night from Kamala
Last night my friend and his girlfriend were driving back from patong past fantasea on their motorbike. Past fantasea as you go near laemsinhg beach it's dark. They were stopped by two motorbikes in front of them and one came up behind. The four guys had a stun gun and machete long knives. They robbed them of everything and also took their motorbike keys.
The police said they were lucky as sometimes they like to stick farangs as they don't like them is what he said. My friend said they were trying to stick him a bit but not entirley agressive ..he gave them everything.
So remember don't ride at night in the dark hill areas.
Your ok in a car or a really fast bike but two people on a 125cc bike have no chance.
I really hate to post bad things about Phuket but I think people need to be careful.

I have read these quotes of problems before but my wife and I spent time in Phuket in May and June and did not really have any problems anywhere. The odd person trying to sell you dope or offering to have sex with my wife one night but after makeing a joke that he wanted to charge 1000 baht and suggesting I only charged her 500 baht he laughed and drove off.
I have also read about hasles on beach road at night but again I had no problem there either. Maybe some people just ask for problems I don't really know.
All I can say is we drank in the bars within the Soi's had no problem.
We walked the streets pissed at night. No problem.
Beach Road at night. No problem. In fact no problems at all. Just enjoy the place and smile and interact with the people and I don't think any problems at all.
I am sure some situations can arise but I would also think rare. IMHO

There is a difference between the well lighted beach road in Patong, where you will meet other people, and the dark deserted stretch of road between 2 bays/villages.

Thanks for the warning ITM - better safe than sorry and this is not first incident on that road either - some nasty gangs operating out of Kamala.

Low season again and times are hard. Hope Dodger and Denver get to read this, they are in Kamala.
Really should be more police presence on this stretch. They have the police box, but need patrols stopping and searching for weapons each side of the checkpoint.

This was in the Gazette a couple of weeks ago :-( and you are not safe in a car either and the attacks aren't just late at night.
Bike gang terrorize Kalim motorists
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KALIM-KAMALA: Kathu Police Station Superintendent Pol Col Teerapol Thipjaroen has warned motorists using the Kalim-Kamala road at night to take extra caution after one woman was dragged off her bike and nearly held at gunpoint and another woman had the rear window of her car smashed by a motorbike gang.
Vanessa Temple reported that she was attacked while riding her motorbike alone along the road at about 8 pm on June 2. “I was riding my motorcycle from Rawai to Kamala when two young men on a motorcycle came alongside mine and tried to pull my handbag from my shoulder,” she told the Gazette.
“I was unaware of them before they grabbed my bag, as there are no street lights on this particular stretch of road and they had their lights turned off.
“They pulled so hard that I was dragged from my motorcycle. I fell to the ground and rolled down the hill about 10 meters, and my mo torcycle slid about 100 meters on its side to the bottom of the hill.
“The two men continued down the hill on their bike, still with no lights on. After getting to my feet, I saw them turn their bike around and drive towards me, shouting.
“As they came closer I could see that the passenger had a gun in his hand, and was pointing it at me. I was terrified. Fortunately, a car came round the corner at this time and the men drove off,” she said.
Another woman, who spoke to the Gazette on condition of anonymity, had her car’s rear window smashed by a motorbike gang after she was involved in an accident on the same stretch of road.
The woman explained that she was driving from Patong to her home in Kamala at about 1 am when she was involved in a minor collision with a pickup truck that pulled out into the road in front of her.
“After the accident, I saw a gang on more than 10 m otorbikes approaching and one of them threw a rock at my car,” she said. The rock flew through the back window, ricocheted off the steering wheel and cracked the windshield.
“Luckily, I am not hurt and I lost none of my belongings,” she said. “But I will not drive along this road alone again because I am scared.”
Col Teerapol said, “We have heard many similar reports recently. We have contacted the Highways Department but they cannot install street lights along the road between Kalim and Kamala because they currently do not have the budget.
“We know of a teenage bike gang in Kamala, and I have assigned a team of officers to hunt them down,” he said, adding that he believes the two men who attacked Ms Temple were members of the same gang.
Col Teerapol explained that every night, beginning last year, Kathu Police and Kamala Police have set up a checkpoint on the road between Patong and Kamala. “I ofte n inspect this checkpoint myself,” he said.
“Twice a month we meet with parents in Kamala and urge them to a take a greater interest in what their children are doing, and to try and influence the children not to commit crimes,” Col Teerapol said.
“Any person who was been robbed or victimized should report it to police immediately. If not, we have no information about the criminals, which makes it very difficult to protect against the problem,” he added.

Some people look like targets more than others. Those are the ones these gangs try to pounce on when coming over the hill... of any beach for that matter. If you look like someone with a purpose coming over the hill, maybe they will not bother you. If you look lost, then watch out....

What is going on over in Kamala? It sounds as bad as Saprin Hin in Phuket Town.
What police are responsible for that area? Kathu? Sounds like they really don't give a crap. I'm wondering if the local majority have something to do with this as it is very concentrated and been going on for a long time. Especially targeting of farang. Else where this does happen on the island, but it is more random and opportunistic.

It's not just Kamala. There's been some in Nanai road recently and not against farangs but bargirls on motorbikes in the early hours of the morning. One of my regulars is too scared to come to me alone at that sort of time because of it.

is it just me.... but reading the phuket gazette daily it seems the majority of the news is violence and drugs.
sad to see phuket heading in this direction or was it never reported before?
not good for a tourism island if nothing is going to be done to eliminate these problems. does not take much for people to look for other places to go if not feeling safe on a holiday.
personally i have never had a problem. even riding at night from patong to kathu/phuket town and back on a regular basis. maybe i have been just lucky??

Two areas that stand out to be careful
As I said this happend between Kamala going north and Surin in the Laemsingh area.
The other area after kamala going to patong before you get to kalim is also dark and hilly these seem to be the two areas where these robberies take place.
I haven't heard anything about Patong the city or Kamala the city or Surin.
Just be carefull of the dark deserted areas and the fact there is a woman on your slow bike makes you an easier target for them.

Another incident
Denver told me three days ago about another motorbike incident on Kamala Hill.
A young white guy living in Kamala was deliberately run off the road and suffered several broken bones from the crash.

Scary stuff indeed. Happened to me too awhile back. Problem wasn’t so much that they wanted my money (only a few hundreds in my pocket), but that they rammed me into the ditch leaving my arm in a sling for two weeks.
Too bad the MiB can’t find it worthwhile to patrol these stretches at night. Shouldn’t be too costly.
My solution? Stay in Safari until dawn. Purely for matters of safety of course.

Looks like riding a bike at night from Patong is not longer safe !! Been aware of the situation on the hills to Kamala for the last couple of years, but in january the MIB also arrested a gang of youths who`s been operating in the hills from Chalong to Kata..armed with both knives and guns !!
And I didn`t feel comfortable riding the bike at nightime from Chalong to Phuket Town at night this year either....som real dodgy characters approached and decided to ride alongside for a few minutes to suss me out...happened 3 times on the same night, different guys and all riding pillion !!!

Is it on the increase? or just reported more cos less news?
Is it only in Kamala? no cos its not in Kamala its been reported on the road to Surin and also to Kalim, but then its reported in Kata/Chalong and in Patong? Over what period of time have these incidences occurred? answer - Denvers story was to a guy about 2 months ago. The Kalim incidences were last year? only ITM report is recent.
Should we start carrying/owning guns?
Is there a forum locally covering your home district that reports incidences, so we can make a comparison? is your locale covering a tourist area occupied by person from all over your country?
Just doing some wonderings!!!

Gee Dodger, a bit sensitive? Too close to home
Have to say a few years ago I didn't have a car and would take the bike all over at night. Never worried about anything. Never heard of any problems in the news or by word of mouth.
Now it is car only.

Thought this was your earlier post Chris?
I'm not feeling sensitive, just not one incident mentions IN Kamala but all subsequent posts assume Kamala. Thought we had a post about trouble in Chalong? but no mention of avoiding or worrying about Chalong, Crusty robbed in Patong, but no mention of avoiding Patong. ITM original post mentions the road between Kamala and Surin, at I believe Laem Sing Beach junction, so why not lets all assume Surin is an unsafe place as its closer to Surin than Kamala?
This thread adds a lot of separate incidences together, that have happened over a long period of time but when put together starts people questioning should they holiday in Phuket, will they be safe holidaying in August?
My post is not overly sensitive nor really overly concerned but it can and will assist in harming tourist levels and realistically are there more incidences happening on the island than at other tourist related destinations? How many people are shot or robbed in American cities?, UK towns?
I think ITM intention of this thread was not scare mongering but to make us all aware of any dangers on the island and to be a little more careful. And driving late at night on any section of deserted, unlit roads anywhere, has potential for theft but how many times have we all driven home of late? how many times over the last year or years? any problems to report?
How can local Police stop these occurances? only by patrolling the roads and stopping an suspicious looking people, how big would Kathu Police Froce need to be, to always be on hand on every unlit piece of road in their jurisdiction?
My biggest personal concern about Thailand and personal safety, is the ease of obtaining guns and the wide distribution of them, with very few raids or collections for these firearms. I do not want to start an America gun law debate again but if they keep getting them and carrying them, what is to stop farang taking the same route? I might not but then doesn't mean all wouldn't!!
Oh and for those concerned of mine and Denvers safety, its okay now as he arranged for our Kevlar body suits, which arrived today!!
