Rawai resident drowns at Nai Harn

Well-known Rawai resident John Chatteris drowned in heavy surf at Nai Harn Beach yesterday.

NAI HARN: John Chatteris, founder of Atsumi Healing Center in Rawai, drowned while swimming at Nai Harn Beach late yesterday afternoon.

Ian Lenton, who works at the center, told the Gazette that Mr Chatteris, 61, went to the beach with his family at about 5 pm.

Although red flags were posted at the beach, indicating that the surf was unsafe for swimming, Mr Chatteris entered the water and and soon began having difficulty swimming in the strong waves.

He was pulled from the surf and rushed to Vachira Phuket Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No other members of Mr Chatteris’ family were injured.

I knew the guy.

He was a bit odd but amiable and funny, always talking about Chi and colonic irrigation.

He was well into his music and played with his jazz band on Sunday evenings at Friendship beach.

People should take this and other recent drownings as an important lesson, no matter how healthy or how strong a swimmer you are DO NOT GO SWIMMING WHEN THERE IS A RED FLAG!

We see here in Australia all the time locals and tourist swim when red flags or outside patrolled areas and pay the ultimate sacrifice.

Unfortunately you could put a red flag every 2 foot for the length of the beach and you would still get people wanting to take on the powers of mother nature and mother nature always wins, people and their arrogance to the dangers of mother nature will never change.
