Dual pricing in Hospitals
Was over in Wachira hospital today, to see a friend. Turned out she was released the same day, and i decided to help her out with the bill
I go over to the counter and the cashier told me 3000B, which i did not have on me at the time. I counted my cash in front of the cashiers and it was 2800 something.
I didnt have my ATM card on me either at the time, so i told my friend she just had to wait until her girlfriend comes around later and sort this out, as i didnt bother driving back to Patong to get 200B..
After a bit back and forward the cashier said to me: sorry sir, i see wrong - its only 2396B..
I asked to see the papers and there it was: 2396THB as it had been all the time... Can hardly be mistaken for 3000 can it!

Patong hospital dual prices.. They make no secret of it..
Went in with missus and both got identical letters / health check for driving licenses.. Mine cost 4x hers !!
I was fuming but by then I had already done the hour wait and processing.

Only nipping you for 604 Baht ... she was being nice ... being farang normally DOUBLES the price ... and you should know that after having had spent some time inside (hospital that is - MT is not an Aussie).

I probably shouldnt, but i really get furious with this attitude, almost non-stop and wherever you go. Always having to keep your guard up gets tiresome.
I think i need a drink today

I believe Bangkok Phuket has 3 level pricing. Tourist -> Expat -> Thai. I always make it clear that I'm not a tourist and should get expat pricing.
Just add this to the list of things that if you don't like then you should leave Thailand.

Whatever how long anyones list is, I dont think Thailand - or this forum, becomes any worse a place, if we mention or discuss negative stuff about this country.

Not suggesting that. I like to b|tch about stuff I can't change as well. Just noting this is common practice (even at government parks) and isn't likely to change soon.

not in phuket, but up north i had a lot of dental work done at the hospital most favoured in the local area by expats.
the sign in thai on the wall quoted a price 50% cheaper for thais for exactly the work i had done.
i am not complaining as the work was still cheap by oz standards.

Just a couple of examples that spring to mind in my local gym, there is a sign on counter in english that says LS 800B and HS 1000B whereas the sign in Thai (translated by my lady friend) states LS 400B and HS 700B, again i'm not complaining because to me both prices are worth the money its just amazing how blatent they can be, my Thai friend felt quite embarassed.
Secondly on beach road one day i fancied a corn stick off the street vendor, a Thai lady in front of me was charged 10B, i was then charged 30B, my Thai is reasonable and i asked why he charge lady 10 and me 30, he bluntly replied because you Farang !! I told him to forget it and walked off in disgust... again its not the cost, its the principle and their blunt attitude without care...
But as is always said, the beers cheap and the pu55y's hot
p.s sorry if off hospital topic, but was aimed at Thai/Farang price differences...

But there is a flip side too..
The dentist here dual prices.. My buddy walks in, and says he wants to have filling looked at and has toothache, receptionist checks, dentist is actually working on a Thai fella, hes in the chair, mouth open, bib on, etc.. The dentist pulls the Thai fella out of the chair and sends him back into the waiting room and my mate gets instant treatment while the Thai guy waits. He didnt complain or grumble or anything. So in that case the dual price had an added value.

20 baht for my Thai friend.
400 baht for me.
Needless to say, we didn't bother going in.

Did you try waving a Thai DL (if you have one).. Its supposed to make any of those national park prices level down to Thai rates.. I have had mixed success with this..

Mt TDL gets me a "local" membership at the golf club and thats the only reason i got it, that and to prove i'm a resident when it matters....
Can be very handy at times...

I dont know about dual pricing at Bangkok Phuket Hospital, but I know that the discount cards they offer is only available to Thais. When I used Phuket International Hospital last year for a checkup, they gave me a discount card without asking for it.

There is no way in the world a park attendant could even remotely believe YOU are a Thai.

No but its supposed to be a tourist fee v residents not prue farang dual pricing.. A work permit or a thai DL is supposed to make it a local price but they dont always agree.

why shouldn't there be dual pricing?
won't go into a big rant about this being their country and foreigners typically having far more money and all but as an example do you think a Thai diving instructor gets paid anything like a farang instructor for doing exactly the same course? (also the Thai will be expected to do extra work on top)
yes there is a culture of protectionism/racism or whatever you want to call it but 'thais love thais' (over non-thais anyway) i wish my country had even a little bit of the same attitude
it might get worse if the general chooses politics after retirement (a very small if, i know) given what he said recently
"I will bring into use the successful strategy of the late leader of the Chinese Communist Party Mao Zedong who established strong support from both sympathisers and the militant."

forgot to add - say that new phuket magazine's first issue the other week (forget the name at the moment) had some story about a swedish / thai guy in his 40s
lived here all his life, is thai and looks like not made much cash in the past
imagine how it is for him!

Dude, i work in North Africa
Here there are thousands of men desperate for work, they sit at the roadside near the junctions, traffic lights , roundabouts, everywhere.
They have paint brushes, hammers, saws in front of them advertising their 'skill' ...... they sit for hours WAITING for some car/truck to stop and offer a low paid manual job like labouring for the day.
I drive past them every day in my company car from my company house to my nice office with aircon.....
BUT, when i goto the bread shop, i pay the same price as they do, and usually if there's a queue, they insist I go to the front......
boy am i humbled.
In Thailand its a bit different for reasons i can't comprehend, altho' you spout out 'rich' v 'poor' as an excuse !
Peace out
H3X
