Landslide on Nanai
I was woken up around 1am tonight to what I thought was a clap of thunder until I heard a second roar which was clearly a landslide ride beside my apartment. I am a good bit up the hill from Club Bamboo and a chunk of the hill where my apartment is slid off. Although I couldn't quite see myself a neighbour said that one house is hanging off the side but its too dark to see. I really hope no one was hurt.
The whole complex of around 20 apartments has been evacuated and I think its best to err on the side of caution. I'm booked into a hotel now so I can get some more shut eye! I will wait for the rain to subside before going back into the apartment. One thing for sure, the next time I go back in it will be to pack my bags and move to a safer location.
I will give an update here whenever there is more news. I think Nicke said LivinLOS is up the same hill as me so I hope he is alright.
For now I'm gonna declare a 'landslide victory' for getting out in one piece.....sorry couldn't resist it!!
Never a dull moment out here!

Hope no one is hurt.
The grim fact is that the more they build on the hills above nanai, the more frequent and serious landslides will become. Deaths are being stored up for the future.

Thanks Marc for confirming as I wasn't sure. I sent him off a PM just in case someone doesn't get the news to him.

Indeed, its too coincidental that just a few days ago the trees and land was being cleared beside it to make way for construction. I reckon it could very well be the cause of it. Just yesterday I remember looking out at them clearing the land and thinking that it just didn't seem right given how steep the hill beside it is and it already looked unstable prior. I should have thought twice before choosing that apartment but hindsight is 20/20. I guess ya kinda think if it does happen it won't be for at least another couple of years. Its just another demonstration of how stoopid I can be!!

I've often wondered about how well they engineered the hillside construction in LOS.
There is a vacant hillside in a town near where I live, and the story goes that back in the 50's a big apt. complex was built up there, and slid down the hill. But now when they build a house in an area where there is a potential for sliding, the they drill well into the bedrock beneath the soil, and pin the structure into the rock with steel-reinforced concrete caissons, that are poured in place to make a friction fit. Then even if the soil slides out from under it, the house does not move. But I don't think they would allow them to build large apt. buildings in areas of potential sliding anymore.

JayBee, we both know about slides in the Bay Area. Many old and new homes have been built on hills and every rainy winter someone loses. Remember last year some elderly man in Mill Vallley was doing something in the back of his house during a big storm and the hill came down on him and killed him. And this is in a strict building code state. I can only guess how shitty the code is in Patong.

Glad to hear you are OK and hope that all others are too. I seem to remember LiL writing about the land movements in "his" area / building codes and how he would not want to own property in that area.

Lil does have a mate who shares there so hopefully he has assessed the situation if he is in town.....Nicke is some distance away and on the flat so his place should be fine
The treatment of the land up there is a time bomb ticking away...we've had loads of conversations in here about it in the past and I'm sure we will have even more in the future
glad to hear you are OK Gecko.....could have been a lot worse for you!

hope all in the locale are well.
often looked up the hill and thought it all the building looked a bit too much, but as said before even in the west it happens let alone a country where tea money and connections can get anything done.

As I just said in PM (thanks for the heads up)..
Ever since I moved in the house has had subsidence cracks. Firstyear hairline cracks, then they evolved into making new 1mm cracks each 1/2 year.. Tis year its just gone mad.. The house is totally falling apart due to subsidance.. They have been butressing under the house for the last month and we developed about 4 - 5mm width of new cracks (all over it) in less than a month !! The pool is cracking, the whole place is screwed.. We are already looking to move next spring.. We were going to see how the butressing went and it it solved anything 9they have a theory its cos the 3 different levels are on slightly different foundation slabs.. We jsut think the whole place is screwed.. Farting into a thunderstorm is my housemates comment on the repairs.
There have been 2 new houses / villas built in the last year on soft ground hanging over the end up behind and even further out than the hillside residence ones.. they always looked like a disaster waiting to happen to me.
Thanks for the heads up guys.. Will be calling my housemate. Sounds like we will be moving sooner rather than later.

I'm aware of a number of deaths over the years, when hills came down and crushed houses in San Anselmo, Fairfax, and San Geronimo. This could happen even to a properly built house, if the hillside behind the house is not properly retained. It is just gravity. Hillsides are always creeping downhill, and process is accelerated by the weight of the water in saturated soils after months of rain when the water tables get high and the water no longer drains down through the soil but builds up to near the surface. There is not much that weighs more than water, and when soil is full of it, gravity kicks into high gear!!
As far as houses themselves moving, the houses built in the 40's, 50's, 60's, early to mid 70's and before were built just by digging a ditch into the soil, and pouring a reinforced concrete perimeter foundation. Where the bedrock is close to the surface, this works fine. But where there the foundation is only dug on soil and not sitting on bedrock, and you have a substantial slope, then heavy, persistent rains can cause big trouble, especially in areas that water tends to drain towards. And if the rains persist long enough, even areas that normally stay dry, because of good natural drainage, can be affected.

Cheers gents. After looking at it this morning, its worse up there than I thought. The attached photos are from my balcony and there is no doubt that the whole block could easily go if there is another slide. Needless to say I packed a few more of my things and left.
Whoever lives in the house hanging off is extremely lucky. This could even be LiL's place but not sure. There was someone in the house in bed at the time I was told this morning by someone who met him. Its starting to drizzle again here now so there could be more rain on the way and that will surely see the house all the way down the hill.

Glad nobody got hurt by the sound of it, that apartment block on the right looks lucky to not be a world news item today.
Im just wondering how many times we need to see cleared hillsides taking a trip to the bottom before people get the hint.

Great pics , Gecko! Whoever lives there is not living there anymore! He's lucky if he is the renter and not the owner. I wouldn't give you a plumb nickel for it!

Thanks for the pics, Simbo. The one house is just got nothing but air underneath it, and you can see the pilings going out from under it. The apartment house does not look like it will sit there for long, either! I would hate to be the owner, just waiting for his million dollar investment to go bye-bye!! In the US, you can not get any kind of insurance for earth movement damage, so I doubt if you could in LOS, either!
