noise - construction - 24hr - any regulation?

Hi,

For the last couple of days they have been doing construction non stop 24hrs with no more than 5 minute breaks across from where I am staying on soi Tan in Patong. Apparently they plan to stop on January 1st. Aren't there any regulations in terms of night time - is there any point in complaining - and to whom (tourist police?).

thanks

There are rules. But as a farang dont expect anything to be enforced..

The Or Bor Jor (or Tor ??) regulates this kind of thing.. But not for visitors v locals.

If the owner of where you are staying won't got to talk with them then move.

Likely the construction will keep bangking away for as long as it takes. It is high season and everyday they are not open they are losing money.

Silence Is Golden

Not exactly a solution to your current problem. However, I never stray far from my trusty pair of Bose Noise Canceling Headphones. Used them in Iraq, Phuket, on day-long flights, in military choppers, and now since I have some serious party-animal neighbors. (Bless their hearts...)

Caveats: You must sleep on your back, no rolling over allowed, that will ruin the items. Or so I am told. Also, they consume batteries like there is no tomorrow: roughly one per day. There are cheaper NC headsets on the market (Le Bose cost about $US300) but I have never seen their equals in this application. OTOH, Bose Noise Canceling aviation headsets are over-rated and over-priced. Do not get me started on their speakers.

But consider: As a cabdriver in Las Vegas every morning I loaded fares heading back to their hotels. My comment: "We have a name for tourists who SLEEP in Vegas." "Yeah? What's that?" "WIMP." There are worse places than LOS to be awake all night.

For the purpose of sleeping a pair of 10 cent ear plugs will reduce the noise just as much (except at the lowest frequencies) and will allow you to sleep other than on you back.

I had the same problem with noise in Rawai back in September. I wrote to the Gazette and asked the question about regulations and this was the answer from an officer at the Phuket Labour Protection and Welfare office"quote"In Thailand regulation working hours must no exceed 8 hours a day, conconsequentially restricting the maximum working week to 48 hours.
However the owner is allowed to request overtime hours that must not exceed 36 hours a week, though it is up to the official at the Labour office whether to grant overtime. If the noise is disturbing you I advise you to contact your local OrBorTor or another potion is to file a complaint with the Damrongtham Centre at Phuket Provincial hall."end quote"
We approached the land owner and pointed this out to him, that didn't do much good so we did place a complaint with the OrBorTor and it has got considerably better as they don't work near the house after 7-00 at night.
The project next to me is for 96 villa's and is going to take 18 months to complete so it was worth it to me to complain but if it is only for a few days.I would put up with it as you never know who you are going to upset here by complaining
