It will get a thai birth certificate at the hospital its born in, you can get this translated. You then need to register its birth with your embassy to get it a home passport, registar in your own country's registrar of birth's and confirmed nationalisation.

Baby does not need its own visa until so old, can't remember when, but ages.

Better you check something like this on thaiviasa.com but this was a good answer to the same question.

Your baby will be an alien child and get a special birth certificate that says it. He can be entered into a house registration if you know someone at the local amphur office, but the child is NOT a Thai citzen and must have a visa just like any other foreigner.

As long as your visas are up to date, no worries about the new baby until the new baby makes his first trip outside of Thailand. He will need a passport to leave and if he wants to come back, he will need a visa.

Thai nationality is only passed on when a parent is a Thai national.

when a thai girl give birth to a child abroad, does the baby automatically get thai citizenship? I could check it with the thai embassy here but...

Adrian - you need to register the birth at the Thai embassy in Sweden (in your case) - get a Thai birth certificate then the baby can be added to the Taa Bien Baan (house papers) of your wife when your back over here. (Easy Way).

I didnt do this so was more complicated - I took UK birth certificate to British Embassy here for official chop (silly money) then had to get official translation (more silly money) and present these to Ministry of the Interior (near Don Muaung Airport) - loads of waiting around and of course more money for them to chop both documents - then can go to local Amphur for addition to Ta Bien Baan (cheap - 20B IIRC). After that back to BKK for Thai Passport in same Ministry of Interior Building! (Pain in the A$$ Way).
