Spectacles
Hello All,
A new thread to set your pulse racing!!
I just had my eyes tested here in the UK £20. Not too bad. But the price of a decent pair of glasses is about £200 plus (About 12000 bht) Would it be worth me hanging on to the prescrition until i get there in May, or maybe even having another eye test there.
What do you think.
Cheers,
Ferris

bargain glasses (steel frames bit like NHS specs) can be down 1000 - 1500 baht.. Nice frames and non reflective lenses are more like 3 - 4k and designer frames start at that price and go up high..
Somewhere 4 - 8k should get nice high end specs I think.
That was a year or so ago when I bought the missus some.

Bought a pair of titanium frames, Hoya glass and all antireflex and whatever for 7 200 B now in November in Patong. So far I'm very happy with them. Also, they are very capable of giving you a correct prescription here also. It was included in the total cost. The latest designer frames in the new shops in Jungceylon were a bit cheaper than home, but not a great deal. I think the glass is where you can save the most money.
On a side note, the cashier wanted me for her date to Loy Krathong. I've never been asked out when buying glasses at home...gotta love this place

Like a lot of other things, there seems to be a dual-price scheme for glasses.
My wife bought a nice pair of glasses at Top Charoen in a small town up north while visiting home last year. All in, about 2,000 baht, I think, including the exam. On our next trip up a few months later, we decided to go back to the same shop so I could get a pair (same as the wife's) for myself. After a 2 minute (free) eye exam we priced out the glasses, and were told that the price would be over 4,000 baht. We asked why my wife's glasses were only about 2,000 a couple of months before, and were told that was a "promotion". Right.
A couple of months later, in Bangkok, my wife went into a Top Charoen shop and got a quote for a pair of glasses "for her husband". After getting a quote of about 3,000 baht, she brought me into the shop the next day to pick out the exact frames and have the exam. I ended up with a so-so eye exam and a decent pair of glasses for the quoted 3,000 baht. We found the staff to be very pleasant, and they even gave me a discount card for future purchases.
Given the quality of the eye exams I've had at the optical shops in Thailand, I think it would be best to have the exam in your home country and bring the prescription with you to Thailand.

Thanks for all the prompt replies,
After reading them I think I'll go with DrDave's advice and bring my prescription with me. If I can get a decent pair for around 5000 baht I'll be well happy.
Thanks again, can't wait to get back to the place,
Ferris

Just got a new pair in Pattaya 2 days ago. Lenses are cheap, cheap, cheap! Where they nail you is for the frame. Still got away for 4800 baht so considerably cheaper than in the west. Bring your prescription with you, including all the measurements for focal point of your eyes, distance between the pupils etc.

Well the girl who sold me my specs in Koh Samui, a few years ago, certainly got my pulse going!!!! And those crisp, white uniforms they wear at Top Charon can nearly do it for me!!!!
If I remember correctly, I went back to the shop about 4 times to get my lenses polished!!!!

Are you absolutely, positively sure that this lass did NOT need glasses, herself?
Just wondering...

Just on a seirous note had my eyes lasered at patong eye clinic very professional they have upto date technology and very qualified surgens and a lot cheaper than the uk or other places in Europe the total price for both eyes was just over a grand uk , and now have 20/20 dont need glasses or contacts , and to your questions as you may have gathered glasses and the test are a lot cheaper here .

Bought a pair of titanium/frameless gegs on my last trip, I think they were 800 and odd Bht including eyetest, which I thought was quite good. I'm giving serious thought to laser surgery, but as usual confusion reigns.
Iowerpro, can you recall what type of laser surgery it was? Basic LASEK surgery in the UK is under 400 quid per eye, but you can pay double that if you have Wavefront treatment.
Sorry. 8000 and odd Bht!
