do los expats become feral ?
i have seen some very poor behaviour from some falangs in los including an ex friend of mine from australia, who i met up with recently in bkk
he used to be civilised, i dont even recognise him now, walking around like a caveman searching for a mate for the night, groping every girl he sees and generally disrespecting thailand and its people, the kind of behaviour that would land him in jail in australia
i was considering living in los for a while myself but am worried i will become like him and the other ferals, too much power too quickly can obviously change people
does anyone know what i mean or is it just acceptable to be an asshole in los
lets try to improve the felang reputation

There are always going to be "A" Holes in any country. Did you observe the majority exhibiting bad behavior? Probably not. I could guess that a lot of expats get fed up with the hassles of living in LOS and just pay it back with disrespect.

Uhhh, OK, you have friend that is an animal (OK, not civilized as you say). You are concerned about becoming an animal (OK, not civilized) yourself.
I have never seen a reason to be something other than myself when in any country..... let alone Thailand.
You may want to visit the Serengeti and prowl.....

Based on comments from the two threads that HM has started he seemed to have covered a lot of bases.

There's always a minority of social deviants that mess things up for the majority and its a moot point that there are indeed some expats that can really loose the plot living here long term. In part it is the behavior of this sad minority that can turn the locals off falang, especially in the heavily visited tourist destinations.
I guess its akin to how the blacks and asians feel in white countries - the falang tag - and it never goes away, there are few (if any) countries more institutionally xenophobic than Thailand.

Present company excepted of course ( ie board members) but LOS does attract a lot of "bottom of the barrel" expats from the West. Not saying they are in the majority but I think they do make up a significant proportion of the expat community. After all it is a cheap and easy place to retire to relatively speaking.
Having said that the standard of the expat community has increased 1000% compared with back in the 1980's when it really was the Wild West. And compared to the "expat" community in Cambodia and Laos the community in LOS are a bunch of church going angels.
And if you think it is bad now wait till the Eastern Bloc guys start to arrive in droves with their retirement rubles. Now that is a sight to behold.... lol

I can't see what is wrong with the original thread question. Whats wrong with you always wanting to jump on newbie questions and make them feel inferior to yourself....
If you have insecurity problems right here is NOT the place to rectify them IMHO
HM.... the environment of living in LOS certainly does change people for the worse, not all the time but alot depends on the reasons for the individuals coming here.
I see many people come to live here with high aspirations and end up on the slippery slope due to beer and BG lifestyle, that is until the money dries up and they end up leaving. Sure living here would certainly bring some quieter people out of their shell and maybe for the wrong reasons...
Finally, don't lower yourself to the haters, just continue posting and reading on this great forum...

that is my point, i have known this guy for 15 years and always thought he had a good grasp on what is right and wrong, not a "bottom of the barrell guy"

An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial and usually irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community
well that wasnt my intent, just an observation so if i sound like a dumb troll i apologise, - admins can delete this thread if you like
thanks masterwoodsman, i was starting to think reality was not welcome here

I have to agree that this was not a dumb question .... perhaps ignorant could cover it, but then again the whole point of questions is to limit ignorance.
I know a fair number of expats, some better than others, and I have to say that all the expats I know act with a great amount of dignity towards the Thai girls.
I have also met a number of tourists visiting Thailand frequently, and while I personally don't know anyone not behaving respectfully, I have encountered some inappropriate behaviour.
I think the likelihood that a Thai girl will be treated inappropriately by a tourist is far greater than from an expat.

When I first moved here I was told to beware of the expat slippery slope.
You come on holiday, put a nice shirt on, good jeans etc, shave make yourself decent and out you go. Once living here for a period of time, some expats realise that it does not really matter what they are wearing and tee shirts and shorts are perhaps cooler, more comfortable? so they dress slightly down. After a few more months, bothering to shave or make too much effort to their appearance, makes no difference to whether they have a good time with their friends, nor whether they will be able to go home with a girl tonight.
So they slide down the slippery slope of appearance and maybe to a smaller extent behaviour.
I've tried to remember this advice since living here, I suppose its about personal respect etc and to the OP, maybe your friend slid too far!!!

Agreed, and the proof of this statement would be evident any night one was to venture out into the P4P scene....
Expats through experience have an understanding of the Thai culture and what is accepted and act accordingly...
Tourists however see cheap beer, cheap women and their social behaviour is similarly cheapened although not in all cases.....

I agree with this. I also agree it is sad that a non-expats jump on this reasonable question?????
What HM describes often happens but more broadly and in different ways. For example some but come insane over prices and will try and bargain, in all seriousness, a 5 bath toilet fee down to 3 baht. People enter into a self destruct mode without realizing it. Certainly doesn't happen with every expat, but more than you'd think.

You make assumptions about people based on a few posts on an internet forum? Let's compare superiority complexes, bet yours is way bigger than mine.

Just clear this up for me. The expats are on a slippery slope but the tourists are worse????? Or maybe just except your good self??

You have to live in Thailand to have an opinion now?
To the original question:
Feral = 'returned to a wild state'
I have many friends (I know, I know, hard to believe but it's true) who live or have lived in Thailand, none of them could be described as 'feral'. As has been perfectly reasonably pointed out, even by those who have gone on to have a pop at me, the worst behaviour is far more likely to come from those who visit rather than expats.
The word 'feral', in my opinion, is quite provocative. To include it in the thread title is surely either done in ignorance of how insulting that could be or designed to provoke a response.
Ignorance = dumb , provocative = troll.
I will now STFU and get some work done.
