Geirs barplans went down the toilet
Hi everyone.
As some of you know I went to Patong in the end of July to buy or rent a bar.
First of all, thanks to the people that helped me on this forum. And spesually thanks to LivinLos that helped me arrange some meetings in Soi Easy.
Anyway this is a bad storry about how you never can trust a Thai, and it confirm my teory about how a little money in the hand of a Thai makes him forget any other agreement.
This is what happened:
I was going to rent a bar in Soi Easy. I realized thet renting was the thing for me as I have to stay in Norway for 6 months every year. My girlfriend was supposed to take care of the bar when I was home working. And then if things went bad, I wouldnt loose to much monney.
This bar was free for rent 3 days before I arrived Patong. LiveinLos talked to the manager of the soi and told him I was going to rent it. He told the manager that I arrive in 3 days and arranged a meeting for me the day I arrived. But then the unbelevible happened: The stupid Thai rented it out to someone else the day before I arrived. LivinLos shouted him and told the bastard thet Ive been traveling havf across the world for this. The manager told us he was sorry, but there would probably bee another bar for rent in a few days. We called him after a few days but he answered a short No and hang up the phone.
So thats it, the end of the barplans for this time. I looked at some others for sale, but I wount risk that kind of money at this moment.
NEVER TRUST A THAI

Bad luck Geir
But better to have found this out before parting with any money. With the rental figures being quoted on the forum I am surprised anyone can make a living anyway.I'm sure Geespot,Nicke and Stevem found things difficult to begin with and wonder if owning/running a bar is the only source of income when living in Thailand.

Geir, I think your abit harsh there. Same type of problems can be encountered trying to do business in other places as well. In all cultures, there are people that are reliable and honest, and those that aren't
I've been involved in bars in Thailand for about 8 years now, and yes you do come across folks that only have one thing in mind, helping themselves and/or making life difficult for you, but you do learn how to avoid these types.
As you found out, one of the biggest problems faced when trying to start up, is the immediate local Thai connections you make. We were extremely lucky in this regard. Without a good local Thai hookup, even if your wife/partners are Thai, it can be very difficult.
And to answer Dawsey, I imagine that it would be very difficult to live in Thailand, if your only source of income was bar generated. There are so many bad luck stories to be told here, and the number of times that guys sit and talk about their dreams and hopes of making a small fortune in bars in Thailand, well listen guys, the cold hard truth is, "It doesn't happen!!!"

Thats absolut right. But, to be honest, i think i would do everything with thai-people, but never business. They don`t think "same, same" about business.

Hi.
I wasnt looking for earning a small fortune in thailand, I was just looking for a small busness that could make a liveing for my girlfriend. And I would also like to have something to do as Im planing to stay in thailand for 6 months every year. If the bar could pay for itself and an apartment I would be more than happy.
And your right stevem, there are bad persons everywere, but I still think you can find more of them in Poor countries than in europe. I know for shure that if I make an agreement with a manager of a big restourantcomplex in norway, he would never brake it because it would bee bad for his reputation.
But Im not angry for a long time, and I know that soi easy is not the best soi.
Im only sad because my girlfriend really looked forward to do this, but now she had to go back to her small homevillage and wait for my return in November.
But anyway, I had a great holliday

thats doesnt seem bad at all. you figure if you cleared 5000baht after costs a night youd be doing alright. like you said, you wouldnt be rich, but it would pay for an apartment and for you to drink. i was trying to budget for what id spend a month if i stay in LOS for a year and my bar budget was 5x my apartment budget! so it might pay to rent a bar for the drinks alone!

Every cloud has a silver lining.
I don't think soi easy is a bad choice to by a bar but not the best soi anyway.
Keep looking for a bar on soi eric , thats the place to be IMO
You will occasionly see info on available bars at www.soi-eric.com
Either that or get one at soi crocodile (especially near the back near the new disco) plenty of potential customers walking past those bars all the time.
Back of soi eric good too (on the left) because all the customers have to go for a piss so will walk past your bar at some point & you may get some going in/out of flash agogo as well.
Good luck with your search

Hi BB
I agree with your choise of soi, but its hard to find bars only for rent. Mybee if I had stayed with my girlfriend for years, I could have trusted her enough to buy a bar. Sad but true!

I have just been informed of this thread...
Firstly I can sympathize with the issues involved but want to make a few things very clear... Bars change hands fast !! Money talks and everything else walks.
I was also upset that the bar that was available on Monday (when I last checked it out for Geir) was not still available on Friday when Geir was available locally to talk. I was especially surprised as as far as I knew the bar was not 'on the market' it was one of the brothers wife's bar. None of that changes the fact that Geir travelled a long way to look at something that was sold.. The (not previously mentioned) fact that Geir was delayed by a week or more in arriving also had a large part in missing the bar.
Whatever else happened I was merely trying to assist a forum brother in finding a no key deposit bar.. As for the 'stupid Thai' comments or bad words against either Thai people or the brothers involved I want no part of that !! If I (as a farang) was running a soi with no key money and fixed rents I would also rent to the first person that puts money in my hand. Also my connection with these two people runs back a long way and as I kept telling Geir they are one of the few local Thai biz people I would happily trust and as far as I know they offer every assistance in sorting liquior licences / providing Thai names / helping with all the connections that is hard for a farang or new arrival to the island.
Considering the discussions I had with Geir after the first night we met, I am surprised and dissapointed to read the venom in this post, I might also add its not a great way to make friends in a new town. Some of what is already posted above is not the perfect truth especially the comment that the agreement was already in place. Geir explained he was coming to Thailand to look at multiple bars one of which was the Soi Easy bar, in a situation like that with nothing signed etc to say that it was agreed that it was to be rented is totally false.
Anyway thats my 2 bahts worth !!!

Hi LivinLos
Mybee I put some bad words in my mouth when I was talking about Thaipeople. I know that I talked of thais in general, and that is wrong. But at the time I wrote this thread I was disapointed and a little bit angry that my plans didnt work out.I know nothing was signed before I arrived, but thought you had made an agreement with the owner. So I think this is the misunderstanding, I thought there was an agreement between you and the manager. But now I understand, and Im sorry to affend you. Since the manager didnt know for shure that I was going to rent the bar, I had no right to shout at him or talk bad about him on this forum. But I seriously thought he would wait until I arrived before he rented the bar out.
I also guess this story would have a happier ending if China air or my travel agent dident doubblebook my ticket and made me arrive 1 week late.
So I hope there are no hard feelings, cause missunderstandings happends and sometimes I dont understand everything thats been said in english.
Geir

The brothers in question sure werent happy to read the negative comments about their business operations. They seemed really upset. They nice chaps and they are in it for the money like anybody else. I can sure understand them that they rent out the place to the first that shows the money. Money talks and bullshit walks. Dont forget that also many foreigners promise a great deal here in Phuket however they often cant keep their promises.
The last comments are not directed to you Geir but I just mean to say that I can understand their ways of doing business. Ott and Neng are probably the most honoust guys I know in Patong. By the way, I have been screwed over more often by Farangs then thai's. (exluding the ladies offcourse )

Ott is a very nice and friendly guy. But I guess it is same as many other areas, first come - first served. It is same for renting houses or apartments.

Well good luck but...
I understand your dreams, Geir but honestely, maybe this has been the best for you!
It seems not easy to make money in the bars! Not understanding english very well is a handicap! You could have signed papers, maybe not with these kind fellows, that could have ruined you!
And if I would start something in Thailand, Beware me God, I would first at all learn the language!
It's a hard world Geir, you have to protect yourself with more then a hat on your penis!

At last something that tin tin has said has made total sence to me.
But i cant say anything else as i have no real experience of los, or can say with out question, no experinece of running a bar, especially in phuket.
But i mean no offence tin tin, as alot u have said before i have read with great interest, and then hoped to understand a different point of view.
And i hope to be meeting u come November, for a few beers!
