Buying a bar

I have read some of the postings regarding the purchase of a bar in phuket. Can someone who owns a bar give me details concerning these issues;
1. how much for a good bar. ie. located in tiger, soi eric, etc.
2. generally how much must one pay the landlord per month for a bar in these particular areas.
3. for those that own bars, are you able to pay the necessary monthly fee's in both high and low season.
4. can someone refer me to a good website regarding operating a business in thailand
5. your experiences as a bar owner and your thoughts
6. your thoughts and opinions about buying a small guesthouse (five rooms)
7. as a bar owner, are you able to eat, live sufficiently on a daily basis.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. any advice would be most appreciated.

Varies greatly 1.5 to 2.5. Good bars very rarely come on the market

Varies from soi to soi, but generally includes water, electric and common DJ. Generally 12K to 20K

If it was your only source of income, then I would imagine it to be very tight.

If you go into thinking its a lifestyle and an interest/hobby and don't get too caught up in the ups and downs, then you should be OK.

I've look at this before. Just take into account your monthly outgoings, and then workout how much per room per night you pay to met these outgoings.

Considering you can have a meal for B30, this isnt a problem. You need to adjust to the local ways.

Has any bar owners attempted to teach english part time while operating a bar to provide an extra source of income? How feasible is this idea and would it provide enough extra income to reduce some of the risk of operating a bar.

Excellent idea

It seems to me most of the owners of bars here on the island are either retired and have money coming from a pension or someplace, or they are involved in many business ventures on the island. Teaching english is a good option but remember that involves an early daytime hour and the bar will keep you there until at least 2:00am if you want to be sucessfull, so how do you fit in shagging as well

I have thought about teaching as well but my restaurant keeps me very busy most of the day.

Cheers!

Are there any bar owners in this forum that have purchased a bar without any further income and have been successful. (When I mean successful I mean able to eat, cloth, shelter yourself on a daily basis)

Yes the website is www.richmondth.com but we are going to establish a new one soon for just the restaurant.

Hope you can make it next time. We now do hotel pickups for free so just call and we'll send a driver!

Cheers!

Although I can understand your interest and curiosity, you wont get any owners openly discussing their business financials, however briefly in an open forum.

If you are truely intersted, then sit down and talk with an owner.

Realistically, if your looking at going into the business without extra income behind you, sorry to say, but you will probably join the long list of those that have tried before you.
