Working in Bangkok

Hi,

This is to all the people that work or did work in Thailand. I looking to move there and am wondering how hard it was to get a job there (bangkok particular).

Are there any good job sites out there to look at?

The industry I am in is IT.

Thanks

AW

Generally it is a very difficult field for foreigners to work in. It is on the list of jobs protected for Thai's. In the parent office of my company the whole IT staff is 100% Thai (about 25 people).

There are occassional specific positions, but they are rare and usually very specialised.

You will find it almost impossible to secure a job. I worked in Bangkok but was transferred there whilst working for a major international computer company.

Also bear in mind.. I can get a programmer (lets talk web for now but this is across the board) who is very skilled and experienced.. Say PHP, MySQL, as well as graphic design and normal HTML etc.. Shopping cart skills and experience, module administration etc etc..

One with poor english skills.. 25k baht per month.. One with good english skills 40k baht per month.. An absolute programming genius who would make 1000's a month in the west and speaks perfect english with degrees etc.. Perhaps 60k baht..

You feel you can support yourself on 600 USD per month ??

Hi,

Like africanw I am looking for a job in bangkok (IT: devlopment, PHP, MySQL, ...) but it really seems not be easy to find!
I am only looking to do a training there (4 months or +) so I thought it would be easier to find such a position.
Do someone know companies based in bangkok that may hire a trainee like me? I know french language (mothertongue of course ), english and I am considering learning some thaï. I really don't care about working hard: I just want an experience there.

Thanks to you! I discovered these forums by chance and I really love the good atmosphere here!

And 99% of the IT jobs require you to have a BA degree in Thailand and Sinapore even if you are just starting out.

Look at these sites --

http://careers.asia1.com.sg
http://www.jobasia.com
http://www.thaiwebsites.com/recruitment.asp
http://www.asia-links.com
http://www.monster.com.sg

I have been trying for quite a while now and am starting to give up.

Thanks for your help.

I know it is not easy but possible. I have a friend who worked in Singapore as trainee in IT. But of course it seems easier to find a position in an international company which has an office in thaïland.

Do not let hope walk away! Here in France, we can ask for a list of french companies based in thaïland (or having offices in) or other countries around the world. Maybe you can try this too: big companies like banks, insurance (...) have office there?

Good luck to you too! If I find something I will tell you.

Best thing would probably be to find a job in whatever country you live in that doesnt need you to be there.

IE: Webdesigner for a Swedish company, you could easily upload the sites to an ftp from Thailand.

It's not easy, but probably easier.

I know a guy who works as a solicitor in Thailand. I guess he services expat clients only. I was recently offered a position as a Financial Adviser in Thailand but have my heart set on Brazil.
You can see there are jobs out there for professionals.
