Importing Wine ?
My brother's coming to visit me in July for 3 weeks and hates the thought of cheap wine at ludicrous prices. He's keen to send me a case or 5. I know we're gonna get hit by HIGH tax, anyone been down this road before ?
I have acouple of cases in mind.that are in bond at the moment.chateau dauphine 98 I paid only £62- a case.obviously its now worth a lot more.but even if they charge 200 % would only be 120 quid and we would have some decent claret to get down our necks with the bbq steaks etc..will 2 cases b enuf as I have 5 in bond
Cheers

Think GRANMA (as you almost Christened him) has the best idea so far, just bring it with him and pay 54% import duty to be used for personal comsumption....
Plenty of room for fellow wine quaffers as long as you're lesbian !

At 54% I will let all my mates arriving bring as much as they can carry (my buddy in Holland is a Wine dealer and distributor) its the 200% unpredictable shit that scares me..
Also (like cars) who sets the value ?? I could have wine shipped with any value I like on it.. Thais generally have a way of deciding THEY and only they set the initial value..
Though I have noticed that the wine costs and taste seems to have improved in the last 18 months or so (or is it that my tastebuds have not had anything REALLY good in a while)...

Also if you are going to send boxes of wine it may not be considered for personal use and you may need to show your alcohol license.
I had this problem with Swedish tobacco in the past, in the beginning no problem but after a while customs in Phuket town took my packages, told me I need a license since this could not be for personal use (due to the amount I imported). The problem is that there is no license to obtain for Swedish tobacco.
Also while I could import, the fee I had to pay for each package varied between 800-1500 baht, althought it was exactly the same amount each time.
I guess the cheapest and easiest way is to ask all your friends to bring wine with them when they are going to Thailand.

How about everybody bring a few bottles and lodge them at MTB? I don't drink a great deal of wine but appreciate the odd glass and decent stuff has been hard to come by so far.

The imported bottles cannot be left on a license premises as they have no Thai tax label attached, and the excise department does do random checks. First offence 5000B, and then it gets worse after that, up to loose of license.

Keeping Wine in Thailand
I am a closet wine drinker. I really do prefer a decent bottle of wine to a cheap bottle but... The problem with wine is that it really does need to be kept a cellar temperatures. If you boil it at 30 degrees and then cool it down again it is ruined to all intents and purposes.
I have bought expensive french wine in Thailand and it has been truly horrible. I think I would invest in a cellar wine cooler before even contemplating bringing over any wine and ask my mates to pack it in their hand luggage and not put it in the hold of the aircraft if it is unpressurized. You will then have some chance that it is still drinkable when it arrives!

LivinLos, I think you're right. The general standard of wine you'll get served in a bar does seem to have risen slightly over the last couple of years, from totally undrinkable to merely disgusting. I had a few glasses of red in Misty's in Pattaya (not the sort of place you would go to for the quality of its cellar) that was in serious danger of being quite pleasant!

We serve from large bottles of californian red and white. Its drinkable but thats about it. It gets you seriously pissed as well. Its amazing the amount of BG friends I have converted onto red wine, only problem is it make them even more loopy than normal

it sounds to me that you need some kind hearted b.m`s to bring you a bottle or two of a good red for your own personnel use mate .

unless anyone is flying on turbo props,(maybe island hopping) then unpressurised cargo holds will not be a prob.they will be pressurised.
