For local ADSL users with TT&T

My ADSL internet line has been down the last 3 days.

Jasmine Internet is impossible to reach by their support numbers and today I went to talk with TT&T instead. They told me they upgraded their network and D-Link users may have to upgrade their ADSL routers, which can be done at TT&T in Phuket Town on the way to airport. (Close to Thalang)

I first thought it was Jasmine who had problem because diagnostic in the router showed everything was fine with the line but athentication with the ISP failed.

However, I downloaded the upgrade from DLINK's own Thailand homepage at an internet cafe and now it works pefect again. (www.dlink.in.th)

I mention this in case somebody else have problem. I guess I need to do the same with my router in the bar.

I was just discussing the D-Link issue on Thaivisa..

Quote:
Funny you should mention D-Link.. I had a D-Link modem (W-500) and was having connection problems.. ADSL tech comes round on the day when they were sorting out my install and took one look at it.. Smiled sheepishly and disconnected it, he put his own (clunker) of a modem on and said they are having issues with DLink modems and they are not working / causing problems on the new installs.

He then said I could keep the clunker as a loaner and he took the ADSL one to be debugged and tested (I have is name and number and have dealt with him many times over the last couple of years.. I dont suspect he was poaching it).. Seems like Thai ADSL has compatibility problems all accross the board.

I was intending to call as the clunker overheats and needs to be reset a lot !!!!

Looks like I can get mine back and upgrade it ??

My GoldCyber speed is a joke.. 1024kbps coming in at 50kbps some times in the day !!!

I think its a joke that they can advertise and sell 1024 ADSL here, depends where you are I think 256 would be about the limit, if your lucky. If you lived next door to the exchange, then I would say you might have a good chance of getting maybe 512.

My buddies Hinet package on TT&T (1000 baht per month) pulled in 1.2mbps when we McCafee speedometer last time..

He never drops under about 600 and generally gets 800+

For some reason you cant get TT&T hinet deal anymore and he seems to have lucked out considerably !!!

Bloody hell thats expensive. In Sydney I had very fast cable internet and TV and I think it was about AUD100 (~USD80). But thats about the only thing I miss about Sydney, oh and Gloria Jeans flat white coffees, decent meat pies and a decent pizza, but I can live without them.

Yea I remember you telling me about this, I guess there are some areas on the network which are capable of producing this bandwidth, but they would be few and far between. Would love to find one near my place though.

the giganet just came out so it's expensive. it can deliver L2IP and L3IP services and dvd quality tv in mpeg2 format at 4.5 to 10mbps.

the 100mbps network which has been around for years is only US$35/mth and 10mbps is US$16/mth

Yeah 1 Gbps makes real possibilities.. Video on demand.. streaming film servers.. many many channels of stop start tv.. Kinda next gen TiVO..

Even true 100 Mbps should do much of that..

We keep getting told different time frames every time we enquire about new phone numbers in the Chalong area. At the moment the only way we can get a phone on at the house, is to try and buy a number off someone. Last we were told it would be the end of this year.

So much for IT hub of Thailand.

same same for Nanai...

I have been off and on all week this week with crappy ADSL.. 10 different excuses from the TOT but they have a great get out of jail free card because the TOT issue stopps halfway down the hill.. after that its buried cable belonging to the development.. They now blame them and say all the cable needs to be replaced.. !!! $$$

Back on dialup today..

The real question is where on the island you are relocating to, and then if can even get a phone line in that locale. Start at the beginning before worrying too much about which isp.

I would go for Jasmine or CS Loxinfo with TT&T line. CS/Loxinfo is more expensive than Jasmine. You can get high speed and "no shared" and even your own IP, but then the prices are LOT higher, from 10,000 baht and up.

Are phone lines even available?
Whats the cost of dial-up and is it really so bad for a newbie?
Are used laptops at low price available?

She wants a computer too, and I'll go as far as sending her a used $200 USD ebay.com model, but, considering internet access costs and the computer, and her very neophite status, maybe she should just keep going to the cafe for awhile. I like that she wants to keep closely connected with me and in the privacy of her room, but considering the unknown bigger picture of her life that I can not know now.............

Any comments, suggestions, or advice? Thanks

I'v had tt&t and TOT, they all got their problems, currently on TOT, 1024 service, speed tests within thailand http://www.tttbroadband.com/meter.php ussualy give me around 800Kb's however when connecting to the UK or the states it's often slower. I have managed to get 5 meg download at one point whilst downloading a linux ISO, i actually took a screen shot i was so impressed, had just over 500/KB's for about 20 mins, which downloaded most of the 650 meg iso.

I'm going to look into this service, has anyone tried it http://www.hutch.co.th/broadband/index_en.htm ?
3G, connection supported around most of thailand as far as I am aware.

Re: modems problems, i had a problem with the wireless netgear adsl router, where the connection simply stopped working, TOT said they had other people experience the same problem and didn't reccomend using this modem, however a firmware upgrade fixed the issue.

The netgear is by far the best one i'v used in thailand so far, ssh connections (or anything with a session) stay up well without dropping out.

Trouble in Irrawadee

I got TT&T ADSL hooked up about a month ago and so far it is the slowest system on earth. It grinds right down to 0 kps and will not load a page. I am not sure if it just my neighbourhood or what.

I had to set up the modem myself and I am not a pro...but it makes the hook-up. Is there any recourse other than to just cancel the service???

All advice appreciated.
Mick

What ISP do you use?

I did a speedtest now and I got 436 kbps on a 512kbps line, I use TT&T and Jasmine.
