Nice one Paul, gave me a giggle! Not sure why they were playing the British National Anthem at the end but that might just be part of the p1ss take.

Downloaded and duly distributed at this end. Although, if it wasn't for Mr GeeDubbelya I probably wouldn't have this job right now!! 55555

Cheers!!!

They are playing “My country tis of thee” which was the U.S. national anthem until the Second World War when it changed to the “Star spangled banner”. Many people believe it should be re-instated as the country’s national anthem because the star spangled banner requires such a large vocal range that only accomplished singers can sing it.

Star Spangled Banner was made the national anthem in 1931. I'm not sure why, but I think it was because the navy and army were already using it when they ran up the flag for ceremonies. They liked it because of it was about the military defending the country.

It was originally a poem by Francis Scott Key. In 1814, he spent a night on a British ship which was part of the fleet shelling Fort McHenry, outside of Baltimore. The shelling and siege of the fort was so intense that night that when the morning came, Key was surprised and delighted to see the Stars and Stripes still flying above the fort. Then he wrote a poem, "The Defense of Fort McHenry," which was later set to the music of a popular old song, and became the "Star-Spangled Banner" later.

I really like it much better than "My Country 'Tis of Thee"(no offense to the Brit BMs, we do hope your Queen is saved, as well). My country tis of thee is awfully slow, boring, and so maudlin that it is almost pure vanilla. Star-Spangled Banner is a much more stirring tune, and the fact that it has such a wide vocal range and requires a good vocalist to sing it, is part of the reason that it is more stirring. You are always in suspense to see if they can hit the high note just before the end, and if they are really great, then they can do an octave leap when they hit the final note, as well.

It is always a fun start at the ball games to either cheer a great singer who demonstrates his/her prowess with a stunning rendition, or to laugh at the ones who someone thought were good enough to let them sing it, but who fall flat on their faces when their lack of range is exposed(which often happens), and you would be surprised at just how many(very many) professional singers don't have adequate range to really belt out that tune.

There've been some great moments in sports that happened even before the first ball was thrown. Who could ever forget Roseanne Barr's performance? A national controversy over that one, and, in retrospect, the start of the end of a very highly successful career. I don't think she ever quite recovered from the fallout, and it was all downhill for her afterwards!

In all seriousness, The general public of the USA, Aus & Eng are stupid enough to re-elect these incompitent leaders of ours so it makes no sence hanging shit on them because it is just a reflection of the society that we have to co-exist with. On a lighter side, it did make me laugh.

Thats the thing what other choices are there when it comes to election time, they are all as bad as each other, and none of them are worthy of public office. Just look at the crap going on in Sydney at the moment.

There's a few Scots who think the same way; verse 6 goes:-
Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.

God save the Queen!

A few people in England would like to adopt Jerusalem as our national anthem.

Waltzing Matilda would really suit Oz, as one thing everyone knows the words, but it wont ever happen.

Yeah, but only if Ray Charles sang it every time, and he can't 'cause he's dead. If he sang it, GOd Save the Queen would sound just as good IMHO!!

Just checked it again on the link and it is definately the National Anthem of my Green and Pleasant land! It's been around, the Anthem that is since about a quarter to six! (1745) Obviously it's been cannibalised by various, shall we say, lesser countries because it's so bloody good and been around that much longer than those countries!! Why try and change perfection? Silly isn't it?

I reckon with a Vengaboy style re-mix, some drum and bass, have Kylie and Natalie Umbruglia singing it, it should do Australia for at least the next 100 years or so!

And......AND While we are on the subject of the Antipodes..Ban all Aussie Prime Ministers touching my Queenies bottom! What's all that about! She has a better backside than Kylie IMHO too!

The music to the UK national anthem was, prior to German unification in 1870, the theme of the Prussian R. family. I am awaiting an opportunity to sing the true lyrics in the presence of the Wh0re of Windsor or one of her foul clan... "Heil dir im Siegerkranz..."

I beleive the tune is also still used for the national anthem in Lichtenstein and, at one time, Switzerland.

In a similar vein the anthem of the socialist movement, "Keep the Red Flag Flying Here" tends to have Americans bursting into choruses of "Oh Christmas Tree", and isn't "Land of Hope and Glory" know in the US as "The Graduation Song"?

BTW: Isn't that a well-groomed version of Andy D1ck in the video?

(This forum's censor software is a real pain when talking about legitimate subjects like the ***** of Windsor or Andy **** )

Jazz I think that was the entire point of the clip that Marc originally posted!

Many countries send thier soldiers, airmen and sailors to places they don't necessarliy want to be, however, those people know the risks involved in enlisting and working in such an organisation, unless, conscripted which the US Military isn't right now.

Some people are vocal about thier opinions of thier particular leaders by making elaborate and scathing videos for public consumption, others use one-liners in forums about Thailand!

Yes I agree Denver it just makes me sad and yet angry to see troops get needlessly killed when there was no reason for those good troops to be there in the first place except to fulfill Bush and his corrupt cronies fantasies

No point here, just get a kick out of the fact that one of Carlin's seven words gets past the software.

The Man Is an Idiot

Nice one Paul.

I've always thought our president to be an idiot. In my mind he will always remain one. I will give him credit if he actually sacks Cheney, which he should do. I h
