Game fishing

Does anyone have any experience regarding game fishing out of Phuket. What's it like, who are the best local operators, how much etc.

Hey Dave,

I did this. Pick up at hotel (ex-pat, who arranged the trip) early, 7am IRC, and an hour or so to Chalong. Full day on the boat inc dinner (fried chicken and rice) and you keep as much fish as you want.

We took a couple of tuna back to the hotel, gave one to the receptionist and paid the cook 100baht to barbecue the other.

We did a cheap trip, 1500baht, there were only 3 of us on the boat and it was very basic. We caught a lot of tuna and one very exciting dorado. We stopped at some islands (which I should know the name of ) for dinner and a swim.

If I was doing it again, I would pay more and be careful about the boat and it's facilities (toilets etc) and maybe make enquiries about what dinner actually was. Ours was a very basic trip. That said, it was very enjoyable.

Ta for the heads up Steve. It seems like you guys had a good day despite the lack of little luxuries like a brasco. It doesn't worry me about roughing it a bit as long as the fish are there. Do you still have contact details for this mob?

No contact mate, sorry, but there are loads around. There must have been 30boats heading out of Chalong Pier when we went, we did have a good day yes, and the fish are there. I'm not generally too fussy about facilities, but the day after party night (every night in LOS), I want to stick fairly close to the little boys room.

If you book it through your hotel, the receptionist who deals with it gets a little pay-day, which always goes down well. Ask the girls man, they will know!

I'm always a bit wary of the slick operators, they can be slick because they know their stuff but I've found more often than not it's the smaller operators who produce the goods. Someone will know a good one I'm sure. Thanks lads.

I have done the basic trip thing before and it was OK food OK and everyone caught Tuna but on really heavy gear . I think I make bring out some lighter gear for sport next time.
When are you next in Patong? Maybe we could get a few BMs to do a charter then we can taylor a trip to what we want at a reasonable price per person with food beer barbie on an island.... snorkelling etc? Im in Patong next from 28th Dec until 10th Jan and I would be up for it. Any takers? Theres more to fishing than catching fish!

Steve

Cool

Dave,
I was there last October which apparently is when the sailfish are on.
We went out of Chalong, the boat was an oldie and a goodie, the team was great (2 guys and an 8 yr old son) and it cost my cousin and I only 3000 baht for the day all together. That was just the 2 of us on board, and all of the trolling/bottom bashing we wanted all day long.
We caught/kept 2 sailfish(35kg /28kg...photos coming later), had several more hookups which busted off, and caught a big mahi mahi.
They took us across to Racha Noi/Racha Yai I think from memory.
A lovely bunch of guys and a truly excellent day.
We fished in the morning, they took us to the island for a dive for a couple of hours zat lunch time and then fished through to sunset with all of the drinks and food you wanted inclusive.
Ill get the details and photos and send them to you if you like this Saturday when I get back to Sydney.

Nice work Dolphin, sounds like a top day out. I just got back from Broome and that was pretty good. I'm still psyched to catch big fish.

SteveT, I'd be in that mate for sure. get a few bods, a couple of hostesses to get the liquids out of the esky. Sounds good. i'm in town from early Dec to hopefully April so....

Here's a fish my mate caught at Broome. The best of the trip!! Oh, and I can't resist, a pic of one of our hostesses. She had an butt hot enough to fry an egg on. So I did!!!

Since you liked that one Barfly, here's another couple for you.

This is her sister, the person that is, not the fish. i don't think the fish were related at all.

Nah mate, only caught the fish, the girls were just eye candy. We were 260kms out to see for a week with 12 blokes on board. You need the birds out there to maintain your reference point if you know what i mean.

The first one's a wahoo, the second is a Spaniard.

Nice link , is this your company , if so , why not give us a run down on any special offers for BMs.

Also , after seeing your picture I'm wondering how you manage to hold the fishing rods.

Cool Sorry Dave

My pics are too big to upload and I dont know how to shrink them....Ive tried resizing them but that doesnt quite work.
Send me your email address and Ill fwd through my hotmail acct rspacetiger@hotmail.com.
No dont know Gonzo but my brother fishes professionally out of Ulladulla sometimes.
Im a humble beancounter living here in the centre of the universe(sydney) and get to go bigtime fishing once or twice a year down out of Narooma and then just bottom bashing every couple of months.
I go out with Darryl who owns Narooma Dive and Fish (?), hes got 2 boats and also owns the first tackle shop on the right as your drive into town.
About 10 of us go down each year, hire both his boats and have an informal comp amongst ourselves. Biggest fish landed, smallest fish, best chuck over the side, best injury and so on.
We normally go first full moon in May as that is when the y/fin peak down around Montague Island, though the longliners have killed it over the last few years.
My 2 big tuna hookups 3 years ago saw me land the 35kg job in about 15mins, the 85kg job took 3 1/2 hours to land and the 103kg blue stripe marlin was onboard in under 20mins.
Darryl's a bit of a bastard as he wont let us use a chair or even a gimble belt...its just get in a corner and brace your knees against the side of the boat. Thats real sports fishing.
Come to think of it we actually had a chair in Thailand, though didnt really need it as the sailfish were no world beaters but a heck of alot of fun no
