I read that thread a few weeks ago and recently got a copy of my passport laminated. That should suffice if I am required to show it.

what happens when you have to leave your p/p with the car/ m/cycle hire company ?
last year the guys(sharks) along beach road that hire out bikes wouldn,t hire me a bike as i would,nt let him keep my p/p
also he/they wouldn.t accept a photocopy which i had with me --its just as well i didn.t leave my p/p with them as the tsunami struck so i would have lost it !

If I were travelling around, I would not leave my passport with anyone. Best thing to do is to get an International Drivers License before you leave home, you can then leave your home drivers license with them. So what if its lost, just get a replacement when you get back home.

This old law - new found enthusiasm to enforce it is more of an issue in Bangkok than Phuket - so far not heard of any raids that the police have asked farangs for passports in Patong (or Phuket City). Bangkok as other threads have noted have seen BiB targetting high end places like Q-Bar and Mystique (now closed to re-locate), although the several times we been to these places - never been asked for passport. If your local and have Thai driving licience this is good enough so I have been told by senior police.

Been in Patong almost 3 months now. Never carry my passport or copy with me...never been asked to show it. Don't have an International Drivers licence...just my UK one with a pic on it...had to show it numerous times in road checks here....no problems at all.

I have always only some hundreds baht (occasional Singha etc) with me , and that's enoughI guess. No any ID card and especially NO PASSPORT.
Why I should carry these important documents in my Phuket shorts pocket??? Forget about!
But it is easy to see anyway that there is Baltic farang walking his way
I have been only in Karon Beach - maybe "boys in brown" act another way in Patong
