Cell Phone

Hi all,

I've been lurking here for a bit, soaking up info.

I'm heading towards Thailand on Dec 8th (for just shy of a month) from Canada, to just veg for a while and perhaps do some diving, as a friend teaches. I'll be there for just shy of a month. My main 'project' while I'm there is to forget what day it is for a couple of days.

Back ground to the question: I've got an OK from my work to buy a cell phone while I'm there and expence it when I get back, so if they NEED to they can get a hold of me. Mind you while work is open, it's going to be night, so they can leave voice mail and I'll get back to them at my leisure.

What kind of money am I looking for a cell with SMS capabilities? How much for voice mail?

Hope to run into some of you while I'm there!

later

Personally I dont think the top end mobile phones are any cheaper in LOS than back home. Buy it back home, at least if you experience any problems with it, you can always take it back. You can still use it in LOS.

Phones start from 3,000 baht for the low end Nokia's and up to around 20,000 baht.

sorry,

I should have added, this will mostly be used for personal use while over there and would prefer to have a number based in Thailand.

If they want to get a hold of me, they have to PAY!!!!

Thanks

Just buy a prepaid sim. Works the same as anywhere else. No need to buy a handset just for that.

sorry (once again)

Where I live, SIM cards don't exist. We're on CDMA networks, not GSM (GPSM).

thanks again for all info

p.s. and my boss told me, just get it, I don't care if you sell it before you leave (get rid of any administrative nightmare when I get back to make it work for someone else)

dont buy the phone here in canada, becasue alot of them are not unlocked. depending on what you want, you can get a nic e phone for 100usd or up. just go to one of the bigger mobile stores and they will help you.
and if you buy a nice enough one, and meet a girl you like, you can give it to her when your leaving.
i bought a motorola v3 in thailand. i know got a fido sim card in vancouver for it
