Play safe with shots
It would be wiser to take the shots.Chiang Mai is way inland and has a different risk factor from malaria than on Phuket.I was told that because Phuket gets a coastal breeze shots were not as important here although there is still a small risk.

Advice from NHS
Yellow fever: Although yellow fever does not occur in Thailand, an official yellow fever vaccination certificate may be required depending on your itinerary.
Requirement: A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers over 1 year of age coming from infected areas. A certificate is also required from travelers arriving from endemic countries.
Other vaccines: Depending on your itinerary, your personal risk factors, and the length of your visit, your health care provider may offer you vaccination against hepatitis A, hepatitis B, influenza, Japanese encephalitis, rabies, or typhoid. Routine immunizations, such as those that prevent tetanus/diphtheria or "childhood" diseases, should be reviewed and updated as needed.
Malaria:
Risk is limited to evening or nighttime exposure in rural forest/jungle areas infrequently visited by travelers: primarily international border regions with Laos in the north and east, with Myanmar in the west, and with Cambodia in the east. Risk is highest in the provinces of Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Tak, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Chanthaburi, Trat, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Surat Thani, Sa Kaeo, and Yala. Risk is lower in most provinces of the southern isthmus. There is no risk in the interior of Thailand nor in the cities and main tourist resorts (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, gulf islands, Pattaya, Phuket Island, Ko Samui, etc.)
Take evening and nighttime insect precautions in risk areas. Medicines that protect against malaria in this area include doxycycline or atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone). Primaquine may be used in special circumstances (G6PD testing is required). Because mefloquine resistance is reported from areas near the borders with Cambodia and Myanmar, mefloquine is not an option in Thailand. The best drug for you depends on your itinerary and on a number of personal factors that should be discussed between you and your health care provider.
Because no preventive measure is 100% effective, if you have traveled in an area of malaria risk, seek immediate medical attention for any fever or flu-like illness occurring within 3 months of your return home. Be sure to tell your health care provider your travel history.

You should get some shots. I've been to LOS adn SE Asia 4 times with no problems, howeve on my last trip my mate caught Hepititus A while we were in Malaysia. So just to be on the safe side. I'm getting it done this time for sure.

Tablets for malaria, cost and arm and a leg in UK, got to get them a time before you go. As stated if not going up inot jungle areas should be okay, I get my tetanus, heps etc checked then boosted as required, havn't been up jungle much so havn't bothered with malaria tabs, my mate took some and it made him feel quite ill for awhile.

My mate lives in Chiang Rai and I will be visiting him there. He told me that the current way of thinking is to avoid mossies by applying plenty of spray etc.
I'm going for my first HEP B jab tomorrow and the nurse has told me if I want Malaria tablets I need a private prescription. Never had one before, but I ain't gonna pay a packet if it's not really required. I had malaria tablets years ago and bought them over the counter, as they were cheaper than the price of a bog standard prescription.

I'm not sure what strain of Malaria is prevalent there but IMHO it is definately worth investigating with your own GP (He will have a book!) on what Prophylactic (Tablet) to take prior to your visit so that you have built up a bit of an immunity to a bite.
Larium (Mefloquine - Quinine derivitive) is the most popular and works but still only gives you about 90% protection and may not be what you require for Thailand, it's good for West Africa etc and only needs to be taken once per week, but, there whole websites dedicated to people who have had problems taking it. Me included, vomiting, hallucinations, rashes etc. What decision you have to take is - Do I take the risk! I now use doxycycline (around 75-80% effective) at one per day when I am in a Malarial area and think it is worth my while religeously taking that little green pill every day and actually panic if I forget.
I have sat next to the bed of a 6' 7" ex USMC Captain, strong as an ox, who was fighting for his life after being bitten my one tiny (Female) Mosquito in Guinea, the malaria was eating his blood cells as quick as his body could produce them. It wasn't a pretty sight and it took a long time for him to get over that bout, needless to say, it will be with him now for ever. I also have a very good friend who lost his wife to malaria in West Africa, it is a killer, don't take it lightly.
Yes, you can minimise risk by taking your own sensible precautions especially at night. Lightweight cotton trousers and long sleeve shirts, liberal use of sprays and creams around your wrists, neck, ankles etc and keeping an eye on each other for signs and symptons of malaria.
A shitty disease IMHO, worth doing your homework before travelling to a potential infectious area. Hope this is of use. Safe travels.

Prevention is better than cure Donz, I'm sure your Doc will be more than willing to help you enjoy your holiday with a little more peace of mind. I am guessing he would rather see less of you than be treating you for some possible tropical diseases! Take care and have a brilliant trip mate.

I was led to believe by the doctors that the jabs dont take effect for around a month so your jabs wont be working until way into your hols.
Get them done though as they last 10 years with the booster in 6 months.
As far as Malaria pills I have never taken them either in Thailand or anywhere else (India, Malaysia etc) they give you some really freaky side effects and you will have problems sleeping. Also some only work in specific areas as said above.
Always best to use plenty of Deet and keep applying.Beer and Garlic seem to keep them away as well as Vitamin B.
Enjoy your trip.
Ill be in Chiang Mai for NY and then down to Phuket for 2 weeks in January.
Cant wait!!!

I'd still recommend taking the Malaria Phrophylactic if it is advised for that particular area you are travelling to Sydney, side effects or not. A few sleepless nights is better than the 'Big Sleep!' IMHO. Some of the side effects are some fantastic wet dreams as well. So I just take a little nibble of a tablet sometimes when I am at home alledgedly! You know! As you do!
Have a great trip over NY Sydney and give my love to the MTB when you get there. Oh yeah, take some Hai Karate aftershave, Faulty uses it and he's never been bitten yet!

lol, I've got some unopened packets laying about somewhere.
Love the first post ranting about the side effects and then the casual mention of wet-dream inducing halucinations.

S'true Benjy, we were being experimented on by the Navy (I wasn't in the Navy by the way, just making that clear!) One ship was to take Larium (HMS Newcastle) and the other ship was on Doxycycline (HMS Cornwall) this was while transiting around the Far East and lots of shore runs into Malarial areas! The doctors on the ships were to monitor the situation and write reports and what ever else they got jiffed to do.
I was on the Larium ship, we were all to take the first tablet on the same day, as it is a weekly phrophylactic. I took mine, climbed up three decks at the pointy end of the ship to my cabin and right at the top threw up over this Big hairy matelot bloke below me. He was green with a big Larium tablet stuck to his forehead, no.........I mean green with little wheelie-bobbles and speaking klingon in strange dialects, then this dog with a spanner in it's mouth and little boots started shouting at this parrot that was stuck in the wires that run all over the ship to get down as it wasn't safe up there and then I fainted..........That was one whole tablet!! Well, most of it! Fan-bloody-tastic! You can normally spend a total fortune getting to that stage of wacked out and the Government was giving it us for free!
I told the doctor about it as we had to, he suggested breaking the tablet up into mash potato, which with the amount of lumps in Navy mash wouldn't have made much of a difference. Anyway, like a prat, that night, I tried again and threw up over the table. This time the ship was a big orange bouncy castle with midgets selling ice creams and..........................anyway, I changed from Larium to the other stuff after that, I had no further problems. However, not before I had | |
