Cool A Good Perch on Patong Beach

On my recent tour I went to 'The Beach Seafood' restaruant/bar area on Patong Beach. I also went there almost every evening to watch the sun go down. A really nice way to end the day and have a bit of craic with the staff etc.

They charged 50 Baht per person for the chairs(& brolly) on the beach. And when you get hungry the restaraunt is right behind you.

Where abouts is your perch? Did you find a good spot on the beach? And if so Why?

IMHO things that make a day on the Beach more enjoyable are:
1. Friendly staff that will get you a nice spot and charge only 50 Baht for the chair without having to haggle
2. A spot that is very close to a nice restaraunt/bar so that you can keep an eye on you stuff while having a bite to eat. Also so that you can get shelter if it pi$$e$ rain
3. Where the TG's hang out
4. A popular spot for BM's (if there is such a spot)
5. Also staff you could trust to leave your stuff with if you wanted to go for a stroll

Although I liked the spot we were in, we didn't explore the beach at all. There didn't seem to be too many bars & restaraunts on the beach like 'The Beach Seafood' or am I way off the mark? BM's input on this would be much appreciated. Thanks

P.S.- I am referring to Patong Beach as that is where most of the time is spent

For me my favourite spot is on Surin beach (north end). It's very quiet as there is no main road behind it and there are plenty of places to sit and grab a drink and the food I have had at several places has always been very good. It may be a bit too quiet for some people, but for me that is what makes a beach - the less people the better.

I'd recommend anyone to go there, especially if you have not been since the restaurants have been forced back off the beach. Now they are all back across the small road leaving the beach with only the tables and chairs, and massage areas.

It's also somewhere you can leave your gear without having to worry - I left my camera bag with several k of gear in it to grab some sunset pics, and they were happy to look after it for an hour or so.

I was there a couple of weeks ago and met a German couple who were friendly and stayed for a chat and a couple of drinks. I asked them where they stayed and they said here. 'Yeah but where?' I asked 'Over there' they said pointing to a small house perched in the trees at the end of the beach!! They actually live on Surin beach - beautiful. They were caught up in the tsunami unfortunately, whole house was filled up with sand and crap from the beach. Luckily they were both OK.

It's a shames it's a little bit of a trek from Patong, but it's not really that far and I always prefer it to Patong beach which for me is too busy and too many hassles from beach vendors. Surin has a few beach vendors but they are quite relaxed and just wander up and down waiting for someone to show some interest.

I'll be back regularly when the weather ruturns - I miss it!!

Hi Syeatman,

Surin will probably start getting a little busier, they have a slew of new hotels in the area, Its really changed in the 4 years I've lived here (2 in Surin). It is a lovely beach though, we shoudl probably make people aware that swimming there can be very dangerous (someone dies there just about every year).

Thanks for the reply gents. Surin Beach sounds nice indeed and I will check it out on my next tour . However I should have said on 'Patong Beach' as that is where most of my time is spent. I will go and edit the original post (sorry).

Glad to hear that couple survived the Tsunami ok Syeatman, they were very lucky considering how close to it they were. Btw some roudy looking bunch in that pic, looks like they have it in for that copper. Probably told them they can't drink on the beach and thats why one of them wants to plant the bottle in his head!!

Well worth going to all the other beaches, so many to choose from. I'll try and get up north to Nai Thon soon, probably when it's very busy over Xmas/NY, if I can find it!

Also spent quite a few days at 'The Beach Seafood' mostly for lunch and agree it's a good spot & the staff were a lot of fun (well until they started asking, every day, when my girl and I were getting married ...).

Liked Rawai beach for seafood directly on the beach - cheap & a nice place to relax with a girl and eat little morsels of 'real Thai food' (mostly sweet type stuff) bought from the beach vendors.

Same as Patong. But what do people expect when they enter the water when the red flags are out.

I like to be in Kata on the beach in the evening. First the special athmosphere when people are leaving. Kata is a large beach, and one of the only ones, where the evenings are also nice. At the south end there are a few restaurants, where ist there is also the reggae - bar. The expensive restaurant, the boathouse is also on the beach, far above my budget, but with a total different athmosphere...
