As long as he hasn't broken his wing I should think he will be ok.

Get a letter from the doctor stating he is fit to fly just in case. If he looks poorly at the check in they may ask questions and decide for you.
The real answer is with your Father-in-law if he feels fit enough for the long hall. I wouldn't want to make it with broken ribs but I am a pussy! Maybe a hardend carpenter would say it's a breeze and what better place for some R+R?!

The flight from B'Ham to Dubai was half empty, it was a 777 and once the doors closed I jumped in a four seater isle and chilled the whole way. The cabin crew actually advised me to do that too, they were great and I throughly recommend Emirates. The flight from Dubai to BKK was full to the brim as it bounced in BKK then onto Honk Kong and not as pleasant.
The flight from BKK to Phuket was easy and comfortable, first with Nok Air and second with Air Asia, both comfy. My advice is to get the letter saying he is fit, at check in advise the staff and see if you can land a free upgrade for him and his wife at least a seat with room either side of him for comfort. Check in really early, hope all goes well.

Not sure I understand what your asking here. You have a doctors opinion, but your asking this board for medical advice.

I agree with stevem.
Without all the medical details it would be a serious error for anyone to give advice on this subject , only a qualified doctor who is treating the patient can decide whether it is safe/advisable to travel.

Also check with your holiday insurance company says, and how it will affect its policy if you dad in law travels with a known complaint.

It doesn't really matter how he feels on the ground. The fluid in the lungs would be my worry. Anyone who has flown with a cold knows what the altitude changes can do to you when you're congested. 30000ft is not the place to find out Dad isn't quite over it yet.

Another consideration
Another thing you have to consider is that the ambient temperature and moisture levels here could be detrimental to the healing process.Fluid on the lungs is not a good condition to start a holiday. It might be best to let him recuperate at home and cash in the tickets.

Don't take the risk. Thailand will still be there - your father in law might not be if you take him on a flight etc.
A third doctors opinion might be useful - how come the 2 answers are so different?
