Muay Thai training
I've been training Muay Thai here in Farangland for 1.5 months now and want to train in Phuket when I come for about a month in March. Can anyone recommend a gym to train at? I'm looking mostly for fitness benefits - nothing too serious, maybe training every second day or so... gotta leave time for girls and sanuk (and suitable recovery time)
I've found these places:
Near Kata: http://www.phuket-muay-thai.com/index.htm
Near Rawai: http://www.rawaimuaythai.com/
Suwit: http://www.bestmuaythai.com/
Tiger: http://www.tigermuaythai.com/
Patong: http://www.phuketdir.com/patongboxing/index.htm
I'm leaning towards the last one on Nanai road since I'll be staying in Patong even though it looks the most basic. Any recommendations or advice?
Forsa.
p.s. for any of you looking to get into shape, Muay Thai is a great way to do it and it's fun.

Rawai Muay Thai is run by a kiwi, Danny Avison, and is a very good setup. The trainers are all Thai ex-champions and they have a female trainer there as well (not Thai)
Danny is a pal of mine so I am biased I guess, but you wont go far wrong there. Not too convenient for Patong though.

Thanks guys!
I'll pay Rawai Mauy Thai a visit and see if it is worth the motorbike ride every day from Patong. Hmmm, maybe I'll get my girl to chauffeur me to and from in her car
Where are the serious Muay Thai stadiums located on Phuket? Last visit I didn't get to any fights... and before that I only caught a lame "choreographed" display just off bangla (which I don't think was there my last visit in April).

Can't say I know anything about it, but noticed a muay-thai traing area on soi kepsap ( around the corner from Tatum Mansions) which is just down the road from Cristin Massage. Seen farangs working out there but have no idea of the quality. There is an internet cafe next door (very good looking lady running it) and a beer bar on the other side. Everything in one place!
Here for a good time, not a long time!!!

There are 3 staduims in Phuket.. Phuket town and 2 in Patong.. One is on Sai Nam Yen and one is in the old shark club..
All 3 host 'real fights' but the fact of 2 nights per week at each place (max allowed per province) means that they are often not of a high caliber..
My favorite is the Sai Nam Yen or Phuket town events and only when there is a special program. If your a fan then when you get here I can intro you to the Sai Nam Yen owner / manager and he will let me know of any special event evenings..
For national or international fights its a very enjoyable thing if your a fan of pugalist sports.. Me personally, I am, and enjoy that letting yourself get worked up standing on the seats buzz of it
!!!
The rawai camp seems the best on the Island for the fighters they put out..

My friend was Swedish champion in Thai boxing, but he said the training and also the fights in Phuket was very mediocre, he recomended to go train in Bangkok if you wanna train in Thailand.
But i guess if you only trained 1.5 months then you will probably get some great training there

While I agree in general I hear Rawai is an exception.. Thai champion as thier head trainer etc cant be too bad..

Rawai is really good and Danny is a diamond geezer. You can't go wrong.

If I was really serious about training, I would look into BKK or CM
... but really, I'm just in it for fun and fitness (plus I'm nursing an injury right now so can't go at it 100%).

Did you see the guy. He was about 50 and fat. He had had over 100 fights. He is one of the washed up old fighters that will let you beat them up for 500 bt

Finally got off my lazy *** and started training. I checked out the Rawai camp, and I think that's probably the best one - but unless you are staying there, a bit far to go everyday (especially for me coming from patong).
I couldn't find the one on Nanai road, but did look up the one Visa2003 mentioned that's located on soi kepsap. It's actually quite good for what I am looking for... 300 baht for 1.5 hours training which is one-on-one with the trainer. So far I'm pretty impressed with the level of instruction, but have to give my body a few days to recover before going regularly. Good thing one of my girls is rather proficient at massage

I am too out of shape to get into this at the moment but really should motivate myself.. Even just a couple of mins on a heavy bag had me panting and sweating like a madman the other day..
Had you dont any sparring or fight training in the past ??

Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket, also some places in BKK, and a few outside; I think there's some grappling at Ole Larsen's gym in Isan too.

I know that Royce Gracie was training MMA at Fairtex club, but it looks too expencive for me

yes i have been there. now i have never done any MA's but my friend is some former champ in Grappling or some such thing. she is now taking up Muay Thai...this is where she trains.
i had a private lesson there while she was doing her training....was great fun. the instructor was very patient!!!to say the least.
they have a 3 ring set up as well as other facilities. they have classes split between beginner, intermediate and advanced. there is an accomodation camp of bungalows attached to the camp in which many of the guys & gals in training stay at. seems a lot of guys come on their holidays to train and have fun on 50-50 arrangements, then others are there for serious training.
we hung out with a couple of guys who are in camp there....from Uk, Ireland, NZ, US and Canada. ranged from superchamps of some sort to absolute begginers......their views......
the set up was quality and they liked the abilities of the trainers. they all praised the trainers and the facilites.
there were plenty of guys there (50 or so the day i was there). there was always someone with a bike or car heading out and could give a ride or share a ride so the distance was not too big of a problem for them. Many nights seemed to be spent by some over in Patong.
they liked the timing of the training sessions.
the bungalows were fun to stay at ...comfortable enough and plenty of socialising if wanted......2 guys thought they were a little over priced but would stay there again as it is right beside training and good company.
biggest complaint the bungalows did not have a pool.
so that is what i can offer....not knowing anything about Muay
Thai myself. My friend (girl) stayed at the camp when she first arrived on the island (now here permanently) and made a lot of friends...it was great for her to meet so many people so quickly (locals and visitors).
NB. if you are into a bit of guy spotting...you could do much worse than an afternoon spent at the tiger muay thai cafe watching the proceedings.
