Be warned.
OK left last night fairly early.. Did the dinner and a movie thing with the girl and having recently eaten a major steak (which I later came to regret) was feeling too full for drink..
Just get home and bed down and my girls phone (!!) rings with one of my ex's on it.. Not what she wants to hear and gets her all fired up.. So my on again, off again, ex is calling cause shes in the cop shop..
She sounded pretty sober but they had nabbed her for drink driving and it was 30k to get let out.. The girl (who I have dealings with in the past and who I could easily give 30k to.. It was not a scam situaton) had gold but no gold shop open at 3 am and I had no way to lay my hands on 30k at such short notice (paid just rent so ATM maxed).. Ran around to the one connected mate who can make police problems dissapear as his phone was off but he is apparently very ill in bed with his phone off !!!
Bugger all I could do so she had to go through the face losing thing of calling family and begging and being a bad girl.. she had a baby only a month ago and was paniking cause of lateness and baby sitter etc.. Cant exactly just sleep in the cells (I have done a couple of times) when theres a kid to take care off..
Then got home around 4 to start major stomach cramps that had me calling Huey on the porcelin phone till dawn.. Great !!!
Anyway the warning is.. If a Thai bird who seemed mostly sober was paying 30k for bail imagine what it would be for a tourist !!! Dont know the full details but will find them out today !!

Ive never hears it so expensive for a Thai!!! Had to bail a friend out before at Kathu police station, took 6 hours of negotiation, as he had crashed into someone in his car whilst drunk & also full of drugs. The cost was 20k & a copy of my passport which was a bit scary. They were threatening him with deportation and a big red stamp on his passport
Maybe tea collection has not been as good as normal?

Wow! Tough night for you, Sefton!!! And for your ex! 30K is an incredible sum for a TG to have to come up with. In CA, DUI bail is $1600 for first offense. So the 30K is nearly half as much and when you consider the difference in income levels, then it is a lot more expensive for them to put up 30K.

OK so just spoke and seen her (much to my current girls annoyance.. Boy they can be jelous buggers).. Anyway..
Her family immediately sorted the baby issue which was why the panic and also why she was in a bad position to negotiate.. She stayed in jail (not monkeyhouse just Patong cells) overnight and was released today on bail for 20k.
Thats bail so theoretically its just a deposit but I am guessing that money doesnt gome back out of the system here very much..
Whats even more amazing was she was not drunk type drunk, she did not have an accident or drive badly.. They merely stopped her at one of the license and helmet checks and produced a breath tester.. Failure on that she was taken to the station and blew on a real machine to measure blood alcohol etc but she does not know what level she came out with.
She is really pretty pissed off about this as according to her she had had 5 or so drinks, I know thats what every drunk says.. onnesty occifer, I have only had a couple of ales, but when I was talking to her last night on the phone she sounded not in any way slurred or worse for wear.. She was on her way home early to take care her baby for gods sake.
Considering I ride the magic carpet home every night I go out this is a disturbing new issue..

it was pretty well known they were going to be checking up on the drink driving over xmas new year. Sure sounds expensive.
there are now 2 stops on the way to Karon from Patong which is ridiculous.

Thats a nasty one LivinLOS ...Stevem told me similar case last year and certainly I make much more concerted effort to stay away from serious drinking sessions when I know I have to drive back over the hill. Only a matter of time before BiB get decent technology ... on balance rightly so - police stats say only 47 DUI offences, over time that number will surely rise. At least now have place to crash out ... hopefully not ending up in the wrong room!

Day shift
I have been pulled over about 4 times on the motorbike, but its been during the day....all they want to see is a licence.I show them my Aussie drivers licence(car only) and they look at the photo and off I go.....
Mind you if they produced a breathalizer...It wouldn't surprise me if I was over even the next afternoon(those damn Jagenmister shots !!!)..

Be warned.
Looks like the boys in B had a busy time.

One killed and 67 injured over New Year
PHUKET: One man was killed and 67 people were injured in road accidents in Phuket over the New Year celebrations.
The fatal accident occurred at 4:30 am in Chalong on December 31 when a motorcycle collided with a pickup truck. The motorcyclist, Suwit Mumngen, was killed instantly.
Siriporn Sasu, an officer with the Phuket Office of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (ODPM), told the Gazette that most road accidents over the festive season were alcohol-related and occurred largely at night.
According to the ODPM, there were 51 accidents on the island between December 29 and January 1.
Some 1,558 road users were charged with committing traffic violations over the holiday period.
These included 1,046 found to be driving without a valid license; 301 motorcyclists fined for not wearing a crash helmet and 76 drivers charged for not wearing a seat belt. There were 43 drunk driving charges and 27 people were fined for driving illegally modified motorcycles. Thirteen people were charged for breaking the speed limit.

Well it was 20k 'bail' in the end and she has to go to court..
A few months ago the rumour opn the expat grapevine was that a drink driving conviction would give a 15k fine (if that was through court or not) AND thet you would get a red stamp and deportation for breaking the law, essentially losing business, girlfriend, life, home etc all in one fell swoop (yes they have that right and power, we are not citizens and PR is almost a dream).. The word was a clampdown was just about to start..
At the time we all agreed it was highly unlikely but it did make the rounds of conversation for a few weeks... Nothing happened at the time.
I have just been called and have a BDay bash to attend in Kathu tonight.. Right past that friggin roadblock !!!!

Sounds like u had a good nite Sefton.
Bangkok post reported something like 270 people killed in Thailand on the roads in the past 4 days.....last year it was over 500 for the first 4 days of the holiday period.

Hi Livinlos,
The big question is, did this happens inside Patong or on the roads outside Patong?
I never seen something like this inside Patong.

Well Sef, Im not surpriced. I left you and Mike'e 4.30 with a full bottle of Jack on the bar. Today the bottle was empty
Anyway, about the 20k for 'bail' she will probably get most of it back. My x-gf was locked 6 months ago since we was one license short in the bar. Also bail 20k. She went to cort and got the 20k back, but had to pay a 5k ticket. Not the same thing, but they probably have the same prosediur on most 'small' cases

Well you never leave until the bottles done do ya.. Would be rude !!!
Was pretty blitzed when I got there from that Kathu BDay thing.. Then your bar drinks then demanding the bottle of jack as you closed.. Then I seem to remember Mikey having those garlic chicken things so we must have been in Didi's at some stage..
Right old state.. Also I thought I had given my keys to my GF (I hadnt) and she had gone to her room cause she was bored of watching me and mike spraff shite at each other so I had to drunkenly break into my place to get to bed..
Mikey is a good one to talk too tho..

I'm betting she didnt have the money on her to pay a smaller fine when she was stopped initially, so it got escalated. Cant imagine them asking for 30k at the street, but maybe back at the police station.

No question of on the street fineing...
Stopped then side of the Rd breath tested. Then to be properly tested and immediately arrested..
No options of payouts at all until the bail issue came up.. family finally haggled it to 20k but this is a Thai family with a bar here and friends etc..

Is it a fine and 'red stamp' for tourists? Drinking and driving would be very unattractive if that's where it gets you
