Songkran
In all the years I have been going to LOS, I have only managed to get there for Songkran once, about 15 years ago. I was in Chang Mai at the time, did not have a clue as to what was happening but had a ball! At that time everyone (especially cops on traffic duty ) except Monks were fair game!
I would like to know if the same sort of rules apply now days and if the Songkran is as big a deal in the south (Phuket ) as in the north and east.

Personally I now avoid it. It used to be fun, but the whole meaning of the celebration has been lost these days.

The traditional drop of water on the shoulder , or touch of powder on the face is an insight into the old ways, and when that happens , I feel honoured .
The running water battles and wet t-shirts are also fun (for a while) but , for me , it gets a bit much after a while and now I usually go down town for a couple of hours and then find a "safe haven" and wait till it all dies down.
For newcomers , it's great and I'd recommend it , but after 9 years , it's beginning to get too commercial.
BUT, hopefully I'll be there !!!!!!!!

Thanks for the replies guys. A salty tear was coming from my eye, thinking about lost youth and innocence for a moment there. If it has gone the way of christmas then maybe I won't wait so long and go bother the girls in March instead.

The original traditional meaning, is not drenching all and sundry in water and powder and what ever else might be at hand. By all means go and enjoy yourselves, it is fun at first. I know alot of people that just stay home during the Songkran period, just to avoid it.

Songkran is the biggest waterfight you've ever seen, and not incidentally, the biggest wet T-shirt competition too. The first couple of times its the most fun you've ever had, but it does begin to pall after a few years. A lot of the guys who live here try to have a short stroll down Bangla on the main afternoon just to see the show but otherwise stay at home, some don't come out at all for 3 days. Problem is the idiots - every shot is aimed at the eyes, even if you're on a motorbike. Add in flour, prickly heat powder, food dye and ice and it can get ugly quickly.
Having said all that, if you're a first timer, get down there and enjoy the hell out of it and don't listen to us boring old bastards.

I was in Patong for Songkran in April 2005 and must admit the first day was a laugh, however on the second day I started getting a bit cheesed off with not being able to escape from the continual soakings and I did get annoyed on several occasions by getting squirted in the eyes. On the third day I just thought "bollox to this" and stayed in the guest house all day. In my opinion one day is fine, but three days is too much.

being an old boring fart
dont forget your drinking as well and with all the crap flying about it soon gets in your drink and in you gut,but makes a quick slippy exit out the rear.
but yes i have done two or is three i forget now but they have all been great fun.
bit tiresome in the early hours of the morning or when your trying to eat.
but still a laugh.
