Connect 4 Strategy? Any tricks?

Have'nt really bothered with connect 4 in the past .. until the other day and got beaten severly!

Is there any trick or strategy to improve your chances?

For example .. in noughts & crosses (tic tac toe for the yanks) .. if you have the first go and place your X in the top left or right corner (or bottom left or right) and on your second go place it in the diagonally opposite corner .. you cant lose (if you have a normal set of brains that is) .. it only works if you have the first go.

I have a strategy for you
Go for the BG who is useless in connect 4, her being useless means 1 of the following 2.
1. She just arrived the scene
or
2. She is thick as a brick

Hi Gumleaf,

There are definitely tricks and strategies to improve your chances. The only way to learn them is to play and pick them up as you go along. This is the only Connect Four site that I could find to play against another person online. I am registered as honeyseeker in this also so if you see me there join in for a game. Then on your next tour you wont be whipped by all the bg's!!!

have you seen it when they lay the board flat and play like that.....absolutely mind boggling.

If you haven't seen it before try it - I swear you'll be lost. My girl forced me to play like that after I managed to beat her once (out of about 300 go's!), and I don't remember getting more than 6 or 7 tokens in before I'd lost

55555 Yes, I started winning the odd game or two of "Connect 4" and when it seemed like I was winning a bit too much, I was introduced to this and all my "moves" went out the window !! It is the same game but now the "bottom row" becomes the "top row" and when you go, you effetively push the previously played counters in that column, "down" one place. This also means that you can "push" a column and make up a connection of 4 !!
I also had to play "Connect 5" and even "Connect 6" on other occasions when I won too many

Oh well .. think I'll just stick to the "noughts & Crosses" .. managed to annoy quite a few BGs with that!

I actually tried that system against an ancient computer (built in the 50's) in the old "Applied Arts & Sciences Museum" in Sydney years ago. It was the size of a mini van, used valves instead of transisters and chips and all it did was play "noughts & crosses" !

I technically won .. but believe it or not .. it "cheated" and had two go's in a row .. guess it was'nt "programed" to lose .. and too stupid to know any better!

Stop it!!! Even explaining how to play it makes my head hurt, if I hadn't seen it myself I wouldn't have a clue what you were talking about.

The only game I'll play now is the dice game as that is somewhat down to luck, and my fav is to change the rules to good old fashoined english pub rules where both dice count on every throw (unless the total left is 6 or under). See how that shuts them up for a while! Although my missus was on the case in about 10 mins, and ended up beating me as usual

We normally spice it up by playing 1000 Bt a win, which is hilarious when the next day I dive into her purse and grab my winnings without her looking and then offer to buy lunch and go shopping later. nice bf, nice bf

Controlling the central colums is important later in the game.. more traffic accross them means more of your pieces there creates more line opportunities..

Also important is creating setups where you win / create a line in two ways with both ways one above another (the key piece is missing in 2 places vertically next to each other) as obviously this is impossible to block, by doing this you can only block the first or last line not both..

And yes the playing flat moving colums game is a headbender..

Yeah, soon as you win a game it moves to playing horizontal or playing two at a time, both of which are too much of a switch when you've had a few .....
Some of the girls play for (relatively) big money though.

Give up, you'll never beat them. The best way to play (to have fun anyway) is to get another bg to help you, now that can be alot of fun!

I took on and won about 1000 last night, but didn't take cash playing 100 a game , the only tactic is to pratice a hell of a lot, the strat can change at any point in the game. And I agree with junkhouse 5555

How to win...

This will sound big headed but I win 99% of games of connect 4 I play in Phuket. Also I insist on playing the bar champion.

How did I pull of this minor miracle? Simple, I spent my first month playing relentlesly and losing constantly. If you play, play and play again you will start to recognize simple patterns that are repeated again and again by the best players. It's not rocket science but it does need complete attention and dedication.

I was playing for drinks and paid handsomely for my apprentiship. So, why on earth would I commit so much time and money to this?

It's because I have found that b/g's act completely differently to me when I can honestly beat them at this game. I can also engage in their head games by letting them win for a while then kick their @sses (metaphorically).

Dinner at the Y is always much better after you have had fun with your lady/ies for a few hours beforehand and they don't think you are a dummy!

So, how do you win? First lose 1,000's of times

Also for the perfect LOS evening, keep buying them drinks and never take their money no matter how much they bet and lose. Their kids need shoes and school books

Just did a google search (a bit late I suppose!) .. after wading through all sorts of mathematical crap I found this handy little snippet. I knew there had to be some trick the same as noughts & crosses as connect 4 is a "desendant" of it.

"Connect Four on the standard 7x6 board has been solved independently by Victor Allis and James D. Allen. With perfect play, the first player can force a win by starting in the middle column. Starting in the two adjacent columns allows the second player to reach a draw; starting with the border columns even allows the second player to force a win."

Well thats a start I suppose!

I win most of the time but you are right, if I play against someone better than me and lose all the time, I am better off playing completely different, and not the standard way.

The most important thing is the middle column, and to create double row options to force a win or one row option at right row depending on who start and win at the end when the opponent have no choices left.

With a lot of practise this will be done automatically as you learn the patterns.

Damn my GF kicks my butt everytime I play her at connect four then I have to buy her and her friends a drink. Now when it comes to the wood block game, Jenga in the USA I beat her evrytime, then I get the free drinks, I just do moves the BG are not accustom to then thats when the freak out.

cheers,
DD
