There's a guy operates on Rat u Thit Rd, 200-300m from Bangla, same side as TaiPan. Him and the missus run a language school in Patong and offer TEFL courses.

He has a sign on the sidewalk advertising 'Stay in Phuket - Teach English' something along those lines. I had a good chat with him last Oct. about teaching on the island. He claimed that after his course he could almost 'guarantee' job with WP, all legal and above board.

Interesting guy, Ozzie ex-pat but i didn't persue it as i already have TEFL cert. and don't need the course. Might be BS but sounded genuine enough, could be worth a look if you're interested. At least you'd be on the island while you study and get qualified.

Posted on this subject before but worth repeating - generally, salaries are not high in this field and debatable if it could be done comfortably if this is your only source of income IMO

Swift I agree with you to a point, I enjoy the accomplishment more then I do the money. Don't get me wrong I like having money and I have been poor as well and I perfer my life now. For me as long as I can pay my bills, live in a nice home, and know that the guys working for me can afford to live the same way I am happy.

I will say 23 is a good age to give it a shot if it is his dream. Might as well try it for a year if things don't work out he can always move back.

Poor and in Chicago would really suck. I spent a lifetime there 1 week. Middle of February and cold as hell. People would find out I'm Canadian and think I was used to it. Although I have to say I met the friendliest people there, on the train, navy pier, everywhere. Although walking out of Union Station and around a few blocks the friendliness got a little much. Did get a good deal on some perfume and cologne from a really really big black guy named James though.

Thanks, i have looked into it a bit with the whole thing and the general price seems to be around 30~k-50k baht in most places actually. Thats not bad considering this gives you a certificate that is valid all over the world. And as for the sallary, sure its not great, but if it could bring in 30-50k a month thats ok, and i can always use some of my own savings to make it a little more comfortable for a year, not that much required.

I just remembered LIL said it was 50k a month for a work permit, but i also heard that people with a bachelor can get around 80k working for an international school. So 50k should be doable i suppose?

i would be surprised if there were too many jobs at this salary for a newly qualified TEFL - possible in BKK but on Phuket may be closer to 30k

if you've been doing your homework
have you checked

http://www.eslcafe.com/joblist/
and
http://www.eslemployment.com/newsletters/012406.htm

these will give a more realistic idea of what is being offered in LOS and other destinations

You dont have to actually earn the required amount, assume 50k, but you do have to pay the appropriate tax on the required amount.
