When you see available jobs in Phuket Gazette.

When you see available jobs in Phuket Gazette, available to farangs. In this case Scandinavians, how many applications do you figure they get? 500? or more?

A little bit curious about how many Swedes that are actually interested in going to LOS and work for Thai sallary's. Me myself i wouldnt mind that as long as i have a roof and food for the day.

Very Very rare Jim. You can PM some of the expats there to get more info. I suggest you just try getting a job back home. Way easier. You think you are the only one who thinks about trying to live and work there.

Minmum salery for a Swede (EU citizen) to get WP working in Thailand (legally) is 40k/month. Not many options - diving/teaching english (?) or possibly high end hotel/golf resort if have real qualifications in catering/hotel management.

I am trying to get jobs all over the world actually, including Sweden. The good thing with EU is that i can work legally within any EU country i would like to. But i was just browsing trough the available jobs in Phuket Gazette and figure hell, might aswell send my resume, might aswell try?

Been to a few interviews now and waiting to hear from them, but thats all just temporary jobs, i need something a little more solid for a longterm.

Yes your right Sef - and note too that you have to pay income tax based on that.

Maybe so - if you can land a job like that - but for how long, you'll need transport as well as food, lodging and doesnt leave much for entertainment.

Jim, you're 23 working for $1000/mo might sound ok, but with no hope of increase you'll soon find out it ain't.

Me, I'll move to LOS for lifestyle but I still want my plasma TV, a nice house with hot and cold running women. I'm not moving to los to eat out of a dumpster!!

I survive happily on 20k a month, with all the entertainment I need.
I go out every other night, got a nice house, a crappy JRD motobike, and all the in house comforts I need. Obviously you can always want more, but I find being happy is alot more important than money.

In actual fact its purely the tax they care about isnt it.. Like you can earn only 20k but still get the WP as long as you pay taxes on 60 !!

As long as they get theirs thats thier only concern..

Rather be happy with money than without. I've tried it both ways.

I dont value items. Hell when i studied in Sweden i lived on less then that, and we can say that living costs in Sweden is not comparable at all with Thailand. I never watch TV - I have a quite new laptop, thats all for items that i need down in LOS, oh and a gym card if i was supposed to stay on a permanent basis, but thats all i realy need.

Im not going out a huge lot back here in Sweden either. And if i would be living down there it wouldnt be like a vacation where i go out and drink every night and go to work with a hangover. When you work, you use less money simple as that.

I'm jealous of you as 20k to get by a month dosen't do it for me.

Your rent must be really cheap and must not booze it up, good on you!

I know Sefton and my bar tabs run about 20 k a month each.

Yeah without wanting to get into any how high can you piss contests it sure does have a way of happening !!

When Jimmy is around usually..I think all 3 of us spent about that.. ****ing top day tho !!!

Thats not even counting days when you crash motorbikes or have your phone go in the pool or any one of the other hundreds of things that can go wrong.. As long as its not paying for hospital bills its been a good night..

Well my rent on this 2 bedroom house is 4k +1k for water and electric.

As well as being a Diabetic, I don't drink so thats my huge saving. Although buying that much "Nam Soda" in a bar, isn't really much cheaper than the alcohol

But of course, we all want more money if we can have it, and you live according to your means. If you don't do this, then you will be in trouble quickly.

But I can spend about 200 in a night including food, and have a blast!

Exactly Sef - and for the more serious long termers this is significant - cos if you got any asperations for PR then need to show min 3 years of tax payments before any chance of application succeeding.

Its true enough in Thailand it can be less materilistic than the 'West' - but if you want a humble lifelstyle (Jimholio) - why Phuket? Phuket is one of the most expensive provinces in Thailand. Doing a course to learn to speak and read Thai would be prerequisit to living a 'local' lifestyle. To live on 20k/month would not be easy for most - in fact after you factor in visa runs, doctor/dentist bills - and other unforeseen costs then life would be less than ideal. Note too that 99% of TG's are likely to have asperations - she wont stick around long for nothing.

Good post, sounds realistic.
