BG looking for money from 'Bahtman'!!!
Today I got an email from a girl I met on my last tour. We have exchanged quite a few emails since I got back last November but they have been very few and far between for the last month. She claims that her mother has cancer and has to have an operation. Although she did not make any request for money I can feel it coming very soon as she said she would 'write me' when she gets home to see her.
Although this could very well be a genuine case there are many reasons for me not to believe her. Reasons which I will not go into now but really convinces me that this is not a genuine case.  However I did reply to her sending my sympathy and wished her mother a speedy recovery. In order to help me avoid the 'banana skins' when the request for money comes, does anyone know what the healthcare situation is like in LOS. In other words would her mother get free public medical care if she did have to have an operation. Btw her mother lives in Bangkok. Perhaps she wont request any money from me and perhaps her mother does have cancer but I really doubt that either one of these is the case. Better to be prepared IMHO. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks  HS

If your TG mother is not working and the family have limited resources she can register for the 30Bhat/visit health scheme, but treatment is pretty basic and probably would not cover operation/medication.
It really depends how long you have known her - have you visited her family? If you have not met them or not been together more than say a year - it would be pretty unlikely to be genuine. Even if her mother has cancer - you;d need to know more about the seriousness of her mother's condition. Not an easy one, but as many have said here before - follow your gut.

30 baht heath care scheme is about the value it sounds..
Maybe possibly perhaps see the back of a doctor running down the hall once per every few days.. All cheap meds, etc etc

30 baht heath care scheme,
-got to register in advance before sick. -only usable at place of residence. -great help to thai girls living here.... better to crash on a bike get more from bike insurance...up to 15 thousand usually

Thanks for the replies, it looks like the 30 Baht scheme isn't worth the paper it is writin on. Hope she has better cover than that. If not then I can feel a request for the Bahts coming on!!
