Senior Members, Posting and Replies
Currently Active Users: 353 (54 members and 299 guests)
This was the situation at 12.15 today, lots of members reading the board, and almost 300 guests looking in to see what was being posted.
Recently there have been a few posts like “What makes a Senior Member” and “Does a high post count really mean anything”. I’d like to answer from a purely personal point of view.
I have been a BM for just over 6 months, and have made just over 1,700 posts, including starting 49 threads. Are all my posts worthwhile, do they really contribute something to the board? Well to be honest, no, but at least I try.
There has been criticism that there is a small “in crowd” who don’t really accept outsiders and are too quick to jump in and “pick on” Newbie’s. So, am I really a Senior Elite Member, or am I just someone with too much time on his hands, who has got a high post count.
I like to think that it is a bit of both, I have visited LOS between 3-4 times a year for the past 9 years, so do have a bit of knowledge to share. I have visited MTB twice since joining the board and met quite a few BM’s, they can judge whether my posts are worthwhile or not. I agree that at times there can be some silly rubbish going on between some of us but that is only to be expected because we have met each other and have a better idea about the “real person”, not just from their posts.
How did I manage to “fit in” on the forum, firstly, I posted an introduction so that the other BM’s knew I was serious about the board and not just someone who was doing a “wind-up”. Then I took my time to read through a lot of the posts to see if I could find the information I wanted, surprisingly most of it was available if I looked in the right places. If there was something I could not find then I would ask, BM’s are happy to help but like to see that you have made at least some effort to find out for yourself.
Do I sometimes get impatient with Newbies, yes I do, when asked for the 20th time what some abbreviation means, when there is a list posted at the top of the Newbie’s forum. Also, the continual requests for photos, why should I post personal pictures purely to satisfy the needs of someone who has never been to LOS and who contributes nothing to the forum.
Recently there was a post from a Newbie, and at the end of it he said “He wanted to give something back”, he appreciated what he had read here and was kind enough to try and contribute something. This does seem to be happening a bit more lately and is very welcome. The forum is a two way system, the main reason for the “in crowd” appearing to have high post counts is that they “fill in the gaps” that are left by all the non posters.
The reason I have put the statistics at the top of this post is to show that out of the 54 members on line, probably only about 50% are regular posters.Also,300 guests ,many of whom I have no doubt are regular visitors but have not got round to posting. Is this because they think they will get “jumped on” by us Senior Members, or because they think they have nothing to contribute. I felt like that before making my first post, and yes, I have gotten some stick but that is part of the learning curve.
My view now is that I have got a lot of useful info from this forum, have made a lot of very good friends and hopefully have given a bit of advice which others found useful.
Well, I’ve had my say and let you know why I like this forum and want to keep posting (even the rubbish),to those of you who think there is an “in crowd”, my only answer is “Keep posting”. It is surprising how a couple of well written posts or sensible questions can get you involved and as some would see it “accepted” as a worthwhile addition to the board.
My final thought – It is the quality not the quantity of the posts that count. There are BM’s with a low post count that I make a point of reading because I know that when they do post it is an interesting and worthwhile read.

HHmmmm i think most girls would say quantity ...........unless you have a small one.
Every thread post is good regardless if it is posted by a newbie or a serial BM who gets off on making comments to every possible thread to increase their posting tallies and make like they know alot
Everybody should be able to ask what they want thats what makes a good forum!!!

great post FT - deeply appreciated
i did lurk around for a couple of weeks getting to know my way round the forum(& using the SEARCH function) and was delighted to have found the board.
Must come clean here, my 1st post was on a thread were i hoped i was giving some good feedback on a question asked.
I certainly wasn't trying to be rude by not posting an intro. in the Newbie section, i'd read the sticky but some of the advice must have got lost amongst all the other interesting things i was reading.
I take your point about helping to find out whether a newbie is serious or a troll but really think you're not giving the BM's credit - the board seems to be populated with fairly intelligent guys most of whom show pretty good street smarts. Do we really need such protection from potential troublemakers? - i think not, it doesn't take BM's long to spot a badun.
The quality vs quantity debate will continue and reminds me of the Communist who was waiting to accumulate enough money to become a Capitalist (same same junior members who's views might change with time/experience/post count)
I hope i can see both sides of the argument

This Forum
Hi There . . .
This Forum has been (and still is) very useful to me. I tend to read only what is of interest to myself, and either skip right over, and ignore what is not.
I have to feel strongly about a subject, or feel that I might be in a position to contribute something tangible, in order to feel motivated to reply. That is probably why my Posting count is quite low when compared to my time as a Member.
Many of the high-volume Posters can, and sometimes do, continue to run on-going replies to a thread consisting of perhaps one or two people only, and using only one or two words in each reply, which, in fairness, is all that is necessary sometimes to answer a previous Post. I do not have the patience, or the time to spend hours on a Thread that has usually been answered already, after the first one or two replies.
This method of Posting does not appeal to me, and would be more appropriate in real-time chat Forum.
Cheers
Pdm3

Great post again Faulty......right to the point........I also agree with Alfie (and most of what has been said above)...........the board is for fun and info...........so why get hung up about counts and status etc........most of us who post here often make quips as well as longer informative posts.......that's what its all about!!!!!!!!!!
have your say......don't be upset if someone has a different point of view........and try not to get into a pissing competetion............people get to know you after a while even if they haven't met you they become familiar with you via your posts...........so if you are consistent as a person...the same way as if you are talking face to face......you will strike a chord with members over time and posting will become a more rewarding experience.............
Oh and visit MTB........you'll meet many BMs there and they will get to know you.......and you them........on a personal level..........this always helps with communication

I also believe that some Bm's take this Forum too seriously.....some even give the impression that they are some sort of "Gatekeepers"
IMHO the Junior Member....Senior member....Senior Elite Member Label that is shown is not worth having.....it's a load of bollox.
As for the Forum being clicky.....well that's going to happen to a certain extent, especially if you have met that person(s) face to face.
Apart from some obvious trolls, there has only ever been 2 BM's that have worn my patience out....one is on my Ignore List and one is nearly on it.
Anyway....it's all good fun....if it wasn't l would be on here.

enough posts
I read and enjoy this forum everyday although I seldom post anything. The main reason for this is time, as there is so many posts that I have a problem reading them all, and I do not want to add to that amount. I enjoy reading most of the regular posters and I accept that they post because they feel they have most to say.
Although some drivel is written this is balanced by some very good and sensible posts which give the advice that most readers are seeking.
Surely this is sufficient or do you think the board needs more drivel. Surely the board can only accommodate so much useless information.
I feel members should really only posts when they have something sensible to say and not because they want to reach a certain amount of posts or to want to be seen as a regular poster.
Just how much can we read each day?

I think the Forum would be pretty boring if we went by these guidelines.....Phuket is a fun place...so why shouldn't the Forum be fun.
What's it matter if you can't read all the Threads/Posts....neither can l...but a lot of them do not interest me either.
Sensible.....l'm sick of being sensible....why should l be sensible...if l want to be sensible l'll join the Quantity Surveyors Forum....or the Industrial Engineers Forum.....fox sake !
Don't agree either that people post just to get their numbers up....people post bcoz they want to be involved.....what's wrong with that ?

Well put FT - seems to me that during past 6 months or so this forum has really 'taken' off and as now approaching 12k memebers has reached a level where a good percentage of single (fun seeking) guys visiting Phuket are either members or regular guests.
Recently some very long term expats (in excess of 10-15 years) who are very knowledgable and will doubtless enrich the board have become aware of the forum. This board I feel is a great positive for Phuket's growth and I hope that it continues to enlighten and entertain.

Good post that raises some valid points.
From the point of view of someone booked to to arrive in LOS for the 1st time (wheels up in 9 days, yay me ), i've gained alot of valuable info from this board over the last 5-6months which has helped immensely, and i'm grateful for.
I did an intial intro in the newb section and I use the search engine when i can, but sometimes the results arent what i want, or overwhelming (well i'm crap on puters anyway) so i'll ask, and say ta for the reply's.
Does this forum have a an "in-crowd"? well yes, only to be expected, alot of BM's have been there, done it, got the (MTB )t-shirt etc, met eachother several times and formed friendships overtime and have an on-going banter on this forum, new guys are always on the outside for a while, happens in every walk of life, in all area's. My most extreme example was leaving basic training and joining my old troop which was literally still sweeping sand out the wagons from gulf war1 , now that was fun
Only thing you can do is be yourself and chill.
As for post counts and status, some people set store by such things, I personally dont, way too many factors that can account for high post numbers, its whats in the posts and the person behind it imo.
Still, despite the "wheres all the hot chicks?" questions and the "in-jokes" i dont get, or the thai slang i dont understand, or why people use 555555 and the banter between the more established BM's, the occasional ragging on us newbie's, theres a good overall friendly atmosphere on this forum i reckon, and some valuable nuggets of info for making life in LOS easier.
So i'll continue to lurk, keep me trap shut about stuff i dont know and enjoy it.
BTW, did i mention wheelsup in 9days!!

I am with Alf and Mav.. No need for this to be too serious, full of guidelines and rules..
Searching a little and getting a feel for the place is common curtesy.. But dont take a flaming to heart either.. Its just a place to all join in and chat..

I would have been banned along time ago if these rules and guidelines applied, but on the other hand i would most likely not use the forum either if everything had to be dead serious.

I'll second that motion.
As the board continues to grow, we all play our roles and we all have our effect on how things progress, a board that is quick to respond to people when they cross the line is a sign that the store if being looked after...a good thing imho.
Where would we all be without this haven of fellow bastards....Still going to los and still bastards but without the same feelings of being a part of a group who really do look out for each other, if you want to be a part of something you have to be willing to become a part of whatever it is, sometimes you fit in...sometimes you don't....Up to you.

I have been lurking for a couple of years and have been a bit tight with my comments.......but I still enjoy reading the posts. Some make me mad as hell and I have to stop myself from flaming, other posts I sit here pissing myself with laughter. However the info on here is invaluable you cant buy info like you find on here. I just ignore the posts about Farang women being fat and ugly etc (my wife isn’t fat/ugly & neither is my daughter) and the posts that get high jacked with stupid comments that have no bearing on the topic.
