Does anybody know of, or have experience of, learning to do massage in Phuket.
If so can you recommend any particular person/place?

I know where some of the girls get trained but it's quite a long course running everyday for a month or so....thai massage is a proper skill when done correctly so it's not something you can learn in an 'afternoon'.

You can get a formal school in Phuket Town.

If you want to do it right, go to Bangkok (Wat Po) or Chiang Mai.

When I was having a masssage in Chiang Mai there was someone(Farang girl) being "trained" next to me. It seemed to consist of a very bored "instructor" giving a book of pictures to a student and telling her to get on with it.

I've asked several of the ladies how long it takes to learn to do the various massages as thought this would be good skill to get my lady at the time out of the trade and make some money back in the states. It costs a fortune here for massages and thought it would be a viable skillset. Heck I've thought about learning it myself and getting out of current job that drives me crazy.

For traditional thai massage I was quoted 3 months, usually at a wat and for royal thai massage it's at university level of 3 years. This from the ladies and "the king and I" in BKK. They have always done a good job there but perhaps something was lost in translation. lol

Wife did learn at wat po in bangkok and if i remember right it was about 4 weeks for thai and 20-25K bath for everything, then you get an internasional certificate, and it was about the same for oil and and foot massage so if you want her to learn send her to bangkok for some month, Wat po is one of the best places to learn it if not the best, but if she is not sure this is the thing for here, let her try with one of the shops in patong for some days first so you don't waste 60K+ if the don't like it.
