Stickman visits Patong

Well known Kiwi Ex-pat Stickman (well known to me coz l read his coloum evrey week) of "Stickman Bangkok" recently visied Phuket with some interesting observations.

One of which he thought the talent in Patong was of a high standard.....which surprised me....maybe things have changed in the last 4 weeks....or maybe l was walking around with my eyes shut.....anyway interesting read.....quite positive on the whole.

Thumbs down Aggro in the air???

Poor old Stickman. For a guy that hangs out in Pattaya he thought there was a latent sense of "aggro in the air" down in Soi Bangla. He went on to say that Bangla must see a fair amounts of fights.

Perhaps he should have asked some of the bar owners just how many fights take place. He would be surprised as the answer would be very few.

Most young tourists who do get drunk early and stagger around are here to enjoy themselves and not for aggro. We don't get the larger louts from Europe or Aussie in large numbers. They stay up in Pataya where it's cheaper.

How can he make such comments when he says that he has not been here for 4 years! then goes on to make assumptions about what the place is like when he is not here?!?!

And what was that about prostitution? Saying that it was all so visible. I've never been to Pattaya but from what I hear it's as in your face as it gets - so why have a go at Sharky's because girls dance in a "sexy manner" on the bar while guys take photo's?

I met Stickman in MTB last time he was in Phuket and it may have been 4 years ago. Althought the report itself isnt very accurate as he havent been here many times but it was positive overall, and thats good.

From Stickman Article

But I couldn't help but notice the agro in the air. A lot of guys were off their face early in the evening, staggering around bumping into people and generally doing a pretty good job of making an ass of themselves. There 's no doubt in my mind that Bangla Road sees more than its fair share of fights.

A lot of BM's were out over Christmas and New Year , did I miss something , all I saw was people enjoying themselves. Never noticed the "agro in the air" , and all these drunks staggering around Bangla must have gone home before I went out in the evenings. As for Bangla seeing more than it's fair share of fights , must have missed that as well , never saw one fight in 2 weeks.

Was my holiday all a dream, was I in a different "Patong" to the one Stickman visited , or perhaps by giving a negative impression Stickman hopes more people will visit his "favorite" Pattaya.

Have to say Stickman's report is pretty good

I would also say if im being honest with myself, im afraid violence in Patong was pretty prevelant, many young guys being aggressive because they're drunk, guys not wanting to pay their bills and thus paying the consequences..............................I saw it on a frequent basis.

For most people; if you are lucky on holiday you wont see it and your mind is on about having fun...............if you are a bar owner there day in day out you tend to see alot more and hear alot more..............and if you make a point of going out and about to network then..........................

top end of bangla around tiger, sansabai and bottom around kangaroo, P1 etc........hotspots

So the positives were...pretty girls, busy bars/streets and pretty girls again

The negatives were...agro in the air - regular fights implied, lack of development of beach road, people using the tsunami for money reasons and open prostitution (?)

I'd hardly say it is a positive review of Patong! especially if you read this with no prior knowledge of the town

Referring back to G's post:

I do agree that Phuket/Patong is no paradise, and there is crime if you open your eyes to it/read the papers, some of it quite shocking. But the impression stickman give is that there is a bad atmosphere on Bangla. This is untrue, and not a fair impression. I agree that there is trouble from time to time, but wherever there is cheap alcohol & girls, I kind of expect some trouble to follow.

I seen 4 fights this time...

1 in Tiger Disco which I seen from the balcony, 2 big guys who were late 20s, Early 30's and they really went for it (over a BG who legged it straight away), Kicked the shit out of one another and gave it to the 3 Thai security that came to split it up, Although the way the Thai guys tried to break was probably why, They went in flying with kicks and fists flying, And the 2 falang guys took exception to this and gave it back to them

2 under Tiger, One of which was a guy who didnt like the attention a certain LB was giving him, So he started to choke the life out of her and was really going to do damage only that a few guys stopped him before...

The other one was at CrazyHorse and just sort of kicked off out of nothing, More handbags than anything else to be honest, Got stopped fairly quickly, Again the guys were around the 30 mark...

And the last one was kinda a one-sided fight, One stupid 18 - 20yr old kid was drunk and acting like a real fool, And was all over some guys girl, So the the guy asked him nicely to piss which he took no notice off, And eventually after another 10min of this kid's shit, Your man just stood up and gave him the "Scottish Kiss", And that was lights out... (But he deserved it)

I hear what you say AB but if that is over a two week period in a drink filled, pretty condensed area of tourists, I perceive that as quite a low ratio. Sounds like the first couple of hours I spent in Central Manchester when I took my lad out for a few 'quiet' ones on his 21st in January!

Don't forget that this so called 'Bad atmosphere' is one persons (Stickmans) perception of a place and not everyones. I have seen the odd spat in Patong but nothing comparable to some of the places I am sure all BM's could mention they have been to! Ask Crustasian about Union Street in Plymouth on any Saturday night! 555555555

Same same. In the time i spended in phuket, most of my night excursion staying in Bangla Rd. i didn´t see even one fight. The people had fun and this is why they are coming to this place. sure they drink and make some noise, but if i don´t like i have to stay in my ressort and take my drinks at the hotel bar.
Comparing to my hometown i went for a very late night dinner with a friend in the center of the city. Entering a turkish restaurants with big windows to the street. i counted four heavy fights, every with groups of 4-8 persons involved, showing their skills in somewhat like martials arts, every time with massive police interventions. This all happend in the time window from entering the restaurant and finishing our meal in 40-50 minutes. the döner meal i had was good and got a good show for about 6 euro´s.
Compared to this bangla seems very quite to me.

I haven´t been in Pattaye but can´t believe that the biggest center of nightlife is more save than phuket! But correct me if i am wrong.

I was sitting there eating oysters one night when across the way these two guys started kicking and punching hell out of each other. Just when that fight ended, another one started. Fights were breaking out one after another. I couldn't believe it. Good thing they all happened inside a roped off area.

In 25+ years of visiting Phuket i have never seen a fight....apart from the Muy Thai SD is referring to above

I was a bit taken aback however at just how busy Bangla and Beach rds were over Xmmas + NY just gone..........never seen them busier...... and felt for sure that there would be a bad atmosphere.......... but no still haven't seen a fight there..........maybe I'm just lucky as I'm sure they happen from time to time as AB + G attest

NYE was an absolute riot this year and there were people and fireworks going off everywhere.........I must admit to venturing out only for a short while on NYE as I got sprayed in the eye with crazy string by a BG and had fireworks thrown under my feet just as I was going blind......but that was all in fun........no aggro

i think that I have seen some type of aggro if not full on fights everytime I have been in Walking St Patts............so I hope that Bangla or Beach Rds don't turn into the Walking Sts that Stickman is hoping for........

To all of you who thought that Stickman's report was unfair, untrue or biased; why don't you send him an email to redress the balance? He may even include it in next week's article.

It is very rare with fights in Soi Eric, and if something happens, the security step in quickly.

Actually that was over 4 weeks..... And if I went out into my city centre everynight on the piss, I would see at least one everynight for sure, And they would be a hell of a lot more gruesome than a couple of fists fights/handbags I seen in Patong.....

I was just replying to a few other BMs who mentioned that they didnt see any fights....

By the way, Alfie has just reminded me of another fight in Safari, Probably the same one as he seen

im tryign to remember, and id otn think i have seen one fight. which is pretty amazing the amount fo time i spent in patogn the last 2 years.

in boston and nyc, its a daily sight everytime you go out. boston is ridiculous, all the bars and clubs get out at 2am, so everyone ends up int he streets at teh same times, tons of fights, brutal too!

Fcuk me yeah.. Union street at kickout time.. Thats a place that kicks of hard..

You see the odd ruck but nothing to bad.. Any rural english town at 11 o clock has wose happening outside the chippy or donner stall.. One thing that really used to piss me off about UK was its drinking / fighting culture.. Just normal Saturday night antics getting pissed and kicking crap out of each other for no reason..
