Hey Paul,
You've got my curiosity up now.
Looking up the U.S. Visa reg's and requirements, this is what I have deduced.
For a "non immigrant" visa, (such as a K-1 Fiance visa)...There is no mention of a "sponsor", filing an "affidavit of support". ie., income, assets, etc.
This K-1 visa is for a "non immigrant", TEMPORARY visit only, (90 days).
However, under the same section, with regards to "immigrant" visa's...There is a fiduciary requirement, for the "sponsor", to meet. And the aforementioned "affidavit", must accompany the petition. The "immigrant" status, of course being, of a more PERMANENT nature. As in, a guy marries outside the U.S., and tries to bring his bride "home". Or, guy brings GF over (on Fiance visa), and decides to REALLY marry her...and keep her in the States.
Basically, the U.S. State Department, requires an income of at least 125%, of that level, listed by the department of H&HS...in "their" Poverty Guidlelines. But only 100%, for members of our (underpaid), military.
Below, is a link to the United States Department of Health and Human Services. This includes the current (2006), "Poverty Guidelines".
