I was being a little facitious with my last comment, as when opening a bank account in the UK, you need to prove your identity and address, i.e. utility bill etc.
OK, so Thailand may be a little different, but I am still a little sceptical about the fact that some people think you can just get on a plane, fly to a country and then stroll into a bank and open an account just like that. Banks usually (and perhaps it wasn't noted that this was the first word in my earlier post) like to know where people live and have different rules for residents and non-residents. This is also a feature today with all the new "anti money-laundering" rules that have been introduced recently. I LivinLOS stated he has had no problems opening accounts all around the world......but I think that was a case of "that was then and this is now". Things are changing all the time and whilst some borders are opening as in the case with the European Union, other borders are being tightened.
Going back to Thailand and the ease in which you seem to have opened your account, I would be a little wary of using any bank who was as casual as you state, because if they are casusal in that instance, what will they be like when it's not in your favour ? I did do a little bit of searching around the net after the replies to my post and I looked at Bangkok Bank's site whioch stated that if you are non-resident then you must have non-immigrant visa AND a work permit.

Although this IS a creditcard, strange enough, money will be taken from your account as a debit-card.
The same card can be used WITH a real credit. But, the bank would not give this "feature" to anybody, a special request has to be made again!
So the big difference with the cards, you are refering to, that in most countrys where these cards are in use, it is issued, by your local bank and not the cc company, like Visa or Master. The Bankcard, can be used in several European countries (with higher costs for the user!), but will not be accepted worldwide, like a creditcard, upgrade is not possible!
Even in Paris, where my base is, people still use bankchecks a lot, while in other European countries, they have dissapeard!

Well while you may call it a credit card in my opinion the very definition of how they work gives them thier name..
If it debits your account when you spend.. Its a debit card.. No money in the account no way to spend (unless you bank give easy overdraft without prior arrangement)..
If it gives you credit to buy stuff its a credit card. You can spend when you dont have any money and then they charge you high interest rates on that money until some or all of the balance is paid off..
Just cause a debit card has a visa symbol on it and can be spent like a visa card doesnt change if its a debit or credit system. Its the systme of either giving credit or immediately debiting an account that makes this definition.

A debit-card cannot be turned into a credit-card. Like I said in France you have options how to use it.
Some people wish all the features of a creditcard, like paying all over the world, only needing one card in their pocket, but like to see the movents on their account every day.
A normal debitcard doesn't have the same flexibility of a creditcard, and cannot be used as a method of payement, in shops/restaurant abroad. Btw, if this French creditcard is used abroad, certainly the old manual way, it DOES give you credit. The banks will call it a "carte de credit"!!
Where you are right technically, is when the owner of the card, doesn't use any of the futures of a creditcard. But that is his own choice, most of the time.
Sometimes it are not only the English that want to do the things different!

You see, there are things we do agree on. I travel, to many destinations, and stay weeks/month for the job there. I never open an account.
This is fine for some people, going every year to Thailand for several months. But if you have to open an account just for the weeks spending your holliday....I would like to spend my holliday-hours another way.

I wonder if it is not the ATM who did this to you!
I heard from many people who had the same problem, that they only used ATM and on Bangla road.

Thats kinda true my husband had to show his work permit to open an account. He did not have one at that time and the bank opened the account anyway. Passport was enough.

Card fraud
All,
Just a warning......
Back from LOS for a couple of months, and someone in China has decided to have a lovely day out at my expense!!
No big deal - bank stopped the card right away, sent me a new one immediately and refund on its way. This is not uncommon and could have happened anywhere, but I suspect it was either Hotel or ATM machine?? as never showed the card elsewhere??????

This is scary. I travel quite a lot, and only in Thailand and Bali i dont use my credit card, everything is cash.
I dont really stay long on my trips, so i dont need lots of cash, just enough to get by for that week.
So what advise should i giv my friends back home who want to stay long term?
Only use ATM?
What is the limit of cash one can bring in to Phuket?

had one of mine skimmed,in KL they believe it was copied
only used at the airport.
no lost to me bank covered it.
I always let my bank know the dates of overseas travel, they ring me if used overseas when I havnt advised them.
so IMHO its a good idea to give them info when going on hols.
