I hope to be there for xmas. Is it best to book flights now or a couple of months before. at the moment the cheapest flights seem to be about £650. Will they get cheaper nearer the date?

Well, I'm going the other way.
In fact will be visiting Europe 3 times between now and New Year.
Christmas in Europe - Bugger!!!, but the family enjoy it, personally I can do without. At least it doesn't start in September in Thailand.

I will be arriving Xmas Eve and staying for 14 nights(joyful scenes ). Looking forward to meeting fellow board members especially Dirty Mike. On a slightly sour note have just had notification that I will have to pay 1000 Baht to entertain a lady at the Burasari should they confirm my reservation eek: . Is this in line with the new policy I read about somewhere else on this site about a crackdown on "guests" by the government? Seems a bit steep,I paid 600B last Xmas at the Seaview and zilch at the C & N Hotel & Spa in May. Any comments would,as always,be appreciated.

x mas and new year
to coops
are you talking about the room price or the charge for taking a woman back to the hotel.
i paid 900 baht for room at the lamai inn which is across from Christins massage then 100 baht a night to take a woman back.
i got a few nights free with my flight at the horizon beach resort and they wanted 1000baht a night for the woman guest. I was only there two night.
it's a buyers market at the moment so pick another hotel and spend the extra baht on more beer and more fun or just give it to the bar girl. im sure she will appreciate it a lot more then the hotel.

COOPS!
Nice to see you back on board!
The joyner fee issue has been a hotish topic of late. My hotel, Thara Patong, is adding 1K baht boom charge effective Nov 1. Seems that this is popping up...I suppose the board will keep you posted!
the notice from Thara Patong is as follows
clip
Joiner Policy : According to hotel policy in cooperated with Thai Government, we would like to inform you that any bar ladies, massage ladies or lady-man who visits or happen to stay day time or night time with the registered guests, they have to left their identity cards with our guest services at the Front Desk. An amount of Bht 1,000/person/night will also be charged automatically into clients folio. Visitors or joiners have to leave hotel rooms/premises before 12.00 noon. Visitor ID cards will be returned upon their departure. The guests must be held responsible for any misbehavior, loudness, irritating voices, lost, missing items and damages of properties or assets in the hotel rooms which will be charged accordingly.
clip
note the mention of Thai Government.
There is a push to make Phuket more family friendly and that would follow suit...
As Said Before, I doubt an Islamic Bombing would close Soi Bangla!

Joiner fee?? Whats that??
I am really trying hard to think of a time when I had to pay a joiner fee. I dont think I ever had.
I went to one hotel 2 xmas ago and agreed a rate for the room. It was good, and I said "Do you have a joiner fee?"
"Yes. 500baht a night"
I told them "Bye bye". As soon as I picked my bag up to leave, they said "ok, ok. For you no joiner fee".
Hon Jim, I am surprised at you paying a fee with the amount of time you spend in Thara. I would tell them I would go somewhere else. You are special customer.
I can see the bastard_s using it as another way of ripping us off.
I wont pay a joiner fee. If the girls stay and have breakfast the next morning then ok, charge for that, but having 2 people stay in one bed is no more work for the hotel (except maybe trying to get the spunk out the sheets!! )
Take care
Dirty Mike

I don't even see that as an issue Mike, if I was alone in the room I'd probably have a J Arthur!

Duke, Who said I paid shite...
I think you coverd the issue quite well. Remember, I play the Frequent Flyer game and Marriott Rewards etc....
T.P. (not as in butt wipe) has not been in business for 20 + years becasue they are etc etc....
The claim is, as posted before, the problems with the joyners! Remember a post when we changed over from the old board about the Butt Ugly Kateoy laying around the pool with a huge salami in its mini Bikini....Littel kids don't need to be around that, and frankly it was gross!
As to Thara Patong they will be booting the guests also for problems with joyners.....The fee, is to offset all the damage, and in the case of some hotels to maintain a certain style. T.P. is set up for families, a number of 1 and 2 bedroom setups and kiddie pools.
I had a few e-mail with the owners son, papa don't do e-mail, and there issue was not money but problems. The discussion, which ended ok with me, was based on my 10 visits with no problems. I've had up to 8 guest for day swim and they put a roll away in my room when the girls had a ***** fight in the bar's apt!
Joyner Fee....some merit at some places...
Some 5 star places, J.W. Marriott Soi 2, don't even collect cards.

I can certainly say I've seen behaviour from guys certainly old enough to know better if front of my kids in decent hotels.
I don't wish to condemn anyone for enjoying themselves but there is a time and a place for everything. I hear some 'sex tourists' talk with complete comtempt regarding families, like Thailand shouldn't have any visiting??? by the same token, I cannot stand to see the snooty way some 'mothers' look down at anyone seen walking with a TG in tow. (I've seen both sides of that coin believe me....)
However the introduction of a joiner fee does nothing to eliminate that. In fact it actually gives the 'misbehavours' license to behave that way, they are now a paying guest. As for stolen items, any BG nasty enough to 'steal' is not going to 'not steal' because her customer paid for her to enter the hotel.
Another money making exercise, gotta make up for the unfortunate SARS downturn.

Less Joyners means less problems
That's the theory I was presented with is consistant.....As to the attitude of the board members...I ain't going to pay is clearly in line with the theory of less joyners less problems...These people have been in the hotel busness for 20 years and know their moves. They are returning to the policy...suspended and to be inplace soon. As to the date.....Thats their choice.
Look at the hotels that don't allow joyners..Sorry guys, but there is a high relationship to hotel price and joyner fee's.... In a very many cases...I can tell you the Thara Patong has been upgrading many rooms and may rebuild the old section.....Joyner Fee's, I personally don't object. A nice environment is just right for me!
It sets the bench mark, one I that suits me well....
The low end boom boom hotel...great! That fits the needs of many. As ususal, I want and get best of both worlds
Aug marks over 100 nights in the Thara Pantong in 23 months, I have a great overview.....Even the Boom Boys keep things on the cool side! Shite, the male staff takes more notice of my guests, especially when there are two or even three.
The Thara Patong feels that the loss of a few customers
is nothing....compared to making sure the marrieds/families are comfortable... I've had more that one "Stout Frau" send me the stink eye over a trim Mai Thai Darling, (while the hubby ganders at the goods)...
Besides, any experienced travelers know that coveted customers
get many special considerations.......
Do you boys think I pay 850 Baht for the J.W. Marriott Breakfast Buffet...Shite, there is a free bar and snacks for VIP guests...
Whats VIP.....frequent visitors....The Thara Patong is moving up a notch or two...I like that!
If anybody thinks that 8000 or 10000 baht extra income a day is big business.....Thats the food bill for a family of four
