OK OK here's my picks

I'm not going to pimp any of my former restaurants but I'll chime in.

BBQ Hut as been mentioned, pretty good Mexican for Thailand, good ribs I recomend.

Ke Joc See in phuket town (mostly locals will ever find this place) no sign, no advertising, very good Thai food (not cheap) great atmosphere if you take some friends there they will have a good time.

A certain Thai guy mentioned with a restaurant is known as "king of MSG" but has good presentation skills (can carve an apple) anyone who knows msg knows it gives flavor but at a price. Not recomended

Mon Tri's has gone downhill some people have said but I don't know myself but one of the best wine lists on the island. Nice atmosphere

Salvatore's and Gentana in Phuket Town both Italian and both very good.

In Patong for Italian you have to try the pizza at La Romagnola on Prachnukhro road (he brought piazza for an Italian bar owners bday) and it was the best i've had in Thailand (thick style) got to give this guy credit it was better than I could make.

I've never tried it yet but many locals like Swiss Chalet in Patong it has a very good rep.

Stay clear of restaurants that try to do too much, Italian, French, Swiss, Thai and American and they have 200 items to choose from . Unless you like freezer burn on your food.

Also notice if the menu is in plastic slip covers (very classy and shows true style) ok if it's a Thai restaurant home style if it's a farang doing it the restaurant is his second career.

If you like a big brunch on Sunday go to Twin Palms Hotel (they throw in a bottle of wine for 800 each) it's very popular here as it serves alot of good food, then go to leam sing beach where theres a party every sunday.

I don't think the bar is set too high here and many people come here and set up a restaurant because they always wanted to do it and it's cheap to do here compared to other places. Many times the guy was in IT or owned a business, sold it then opened a restaurant and thinks he knows what's going on.

And the island is too small to really run a critical piece on a restaurant that might happen in your home town (it does in the states) so the papers need advertising and don't want to hurt another's business (which I understand)
You'll never hear something bad about a restaurant in the papers. But I'll give you the scoop.

Whew, I'm going drinking now my fingers are tired.

Quite expensive but we wanted to spluge after a 25 trip. Still a bargain compared to the fine dining places in NYC. Excellent Fine Dining Service. Reservations are recommended from 7:00 - 9:00 as you get the tables with the nicer seaview.

Gotta agree with Moma Tri's, had what was probably the nicest meal of my trip in there.

Another place I really liked was The Dining Room at the Pacific Club in Karon (http://www.pacific-club-phuket.com/dining.htm). The lamb chops there were fantastic although my girlfriend was less than impressed with the Thai food.

well, you know im a snob

but no, nice doesnt have to be expensive, but i like the whole experience
to me its soothing, something away from the hustle and bustle

you mentioned the seafood places behind tiger. i totally agree, love the food
but that, for me, is something id go to after the bar.

like i said, this is just me, but i like to get away from the action, relax in a nice atmosphere before i head tot he craziness of the sois

Mom's tri Kitchen, had in my opinion better cuisine. It is on the hill, road to Kata noi.

Really excelent and more intamate. Now I have been to some of the fancy places, and will not return easily.

One you have some nice adresse to chose from, much less expensive and with an ok athmosphere, this is a waste of money. For a birthday, or so, that is ok.

In Kata, I always go, on the beach, to the last restaurant at the south of the beach, near the reggea bar there. Not the nicest , but with a view on the ocean, and the thai food is at least authentic. Cocaonut in Patong is a bit better, but you don't have the view.

Hey Urtheman.......I love this place

Great building.............Sino-Portugeuese architecture.......I was taken by a local architect friend who loves the plalce...he knows the owner.....is it Khun Lek or something like that???...a great personality....impeccable English....

Great food and ambience......very upmarket and not cheap..but a great night out........kinda has a theatrical feel..........

I've also seen it spelt Kah Jok See..it is really out of the way as Urtheman says.......in a soi called Takua Pa....but just off the main drag in PT.......

Best restaurant experience I have have had on the island........fine dining at it's best in Phuket

BBQ hut is located in the south end of Rat-U-Thit road where it meet Soi Thaweewong (the road who leads up to Nanai rd...Or just go and take one of these Phuket guides for free they have a good map inside..(you can find them all over in Patong)

Ricos in soi viking opposite Soi Lion.. I thought it was over priced.. Italian on the soi off of beach Rd leading to the car park was a better meal for the price..

A good place for a nice, although maybe a bit more upscale, dinner in the middle of Patong is 'Flavours'.
Located in the left soi leading to the 'Ban Thai' hotel. Owners previously were running 'The Wall' in Rawai than 'Nakhon Flavours' at Nakathani and now the new 'Flavours'.

I enjoyed 2 great dinners there recently. Good food, pleasant service by Kathy and a nice wine selection.

Recommended!!

Arkom, chef and owner, is Thai. His wife Kathy, service and co-owner, is French. Arkom's cooking style is best described as French with Thai influences. A bit classic with a twist... Or call it fushion...

I dont like eating if I am going drinking.. Fills up precious liquid room and soaks up the liquor.. Need an empty stomach if I am heading out for the night..

Also just makes me feel full and drowsy directly after even a mediumn sized meal..

i dont really eat too much, for me it really is just a relaxing time away from the madness.

for instance, i think those restaurants behind tiger are superb but if i was to go to one of those id feel my whole night was just blended in to the same scene, if that makes sense.

i like a nice, quiet, somewhat trendy place to break up the scenes for me

Interesting how most of you do not seem to travel outside of the holiday location you are staying in? all restaurants within walking distance of Bangla, says perhaps eating is not as important as the drinking etc afterwards? also interesting how no mention of any of the supposedly top restaurants on the island?

Just my two penneth worth and one for the English, Green Man in Chalong on a sunday for the best sunday roast on the island.

Sorry if I sounded a expat snob but for the 3 or 4 years I was holidaying here I did go all round the island and most of Thailand. I am surprised since living here speaking to many experienced BM's how few actually do anything when they come other than visit Bangla Road.

I felt to get to know the people, culture and country I was visitng it was interesting to me to actually explore a bit, yes it was hard to get out of bed before sunrise on many occasions and that I suppose is the problem for most, but the thread I thought was looking for recommendations on good restaurants on the island instead it was turnig out to be okay ones within walking distance of Bangla Road, nothing wrong with that, perhaps I was just in a pi$$ed off mood, never mind tomorrows another day.
