For You Trusting Types....
For guys who are suspicious/paranoid or just plain nosey - take a look at this weeks Stickman!
Some (UK) geeks have come up with a product (FlexiSpy) that you can spy on your teluk mobile phone antics ... even can listen in on what she's up to. Got to hand it to these guys - what a great idea ... sure MI5 and other spooks will be beating a path to their door!

Only works on symbian phones and (soon PocketPC and blackberry) so only nokia platform smartphones in the main.
I have heard about symbian virus's doing rounds and so see no reason not to believe this.
Ghost Phones are even better.. Call them on a special number and they pick up and answer without ringing or any call logs, leaving the phone in speakerphone mode transmitting all local sound.. Essentially you call up and earwig on what they are up to..

Theres loads of neat toys out there (but expensive) for GSM logging etc etc etc..

do ebay search ghost phone or google ghost phone.. The highest end ones are about 2500 USD though.. Cheapest I ever heard was about 600...
When police track crooks they triangulate a position.. The phone is usually communicating with multiple base stations at once.. Given a rough idea of the phone hitting multiple base stations and its movement from one station to another they get a rough idea where the phone is but not very good. I am lead to believe that new homeland security issues in the US is putting GPS into phones that canm be turned on remotely.. They claim its for rescue situations but I dont swallow that story. Theres no satelite involved in GSM calls (unless its the long distance leg) any more than there is with any other phone technology.. Phone communicates with ground based stations.

The link above looks like it relates to the old systems (ETACs era pre GSM) when bugging and snarfing (stealing a mobiles identity over the air) were pretty easy.. GSM is a lot harder to bug.
I myself used to play with cell phone phreaking back then.

In a nutshell, if ya gonna get up to some mischief.....Leave ya phone at home.
It's also been documented here on tv, how cops have arrested the criminal types from listening in on their mobile phones.....You don't even need to be dialling out for big brother to be listening in on you.
They can record conversations from ya phone e.g ...if ya phone is turned on sitting on a table.

That is to my understanding an urban myth..
A specially prepared GSM phone can do that.. A normal GSM phone cannot..
They can however open the line on a hardwired phone and listen in on the room around it but its a very poor line / low sound volume..

Mobile phone tracking has ben touted for several years in Big Brotherland (UK) as a way of keeping track of kids and employees for example:

had an email about a service in the uk (can't find the name now) where you can track a mobile phone vis a website and it will automatically hook into Google earth to show you the location to within 50 metres or so. Very scary!
The owner of the phone receives a txt message that has to be replied to, to activate the service, but not difficult if it's a friend or family member that you want to track.

Click - BBC programme
A few weeks ago the BBC programme "Click" did a piece on these tracking web site/phones.They managed to follow a guy all round London and map his movements.
That's why I refuse to have one of those infernal gizmos.

AFAIK thats only for 3g phones.. I cant see any mechanism where a 3rd party (not the cellphone provider) can get location info from an SMS..
Of course the cell phone company can, maybe it was a value added they were selling.

Some companies over the tracking of the mobile phone. You get the position of the mobile phone on their internet side, but the owner gets a sms to that the position of the mobile has been messaged. Its good for the security of the kids but dont see the big benefit if you want to observe your gf/wife.

guys your missing one big problem, for the real information you really want to know you need to be able to understand fluent Thai.
yes you may catch a b.g out if she stays in the area of the bars but if she goes home ,where the Thai boyfriends and husbands are then unless your fluent you stand no chance.

I meant that once the service is activated (via a replied to SMS, and I think only once) then the locaion info can be accessed.
Found the site now ( World Tracker) If you click on Demo and on the left bar click on GSM Devices there is a demo number that has been setup. It should then display where the phone was last tracked, which is ususally in West London as I presume that is where their offices are.
Here's a short article from Engadget about the service

As I figured it has to be in cooperation with the telco to get the data back to them on cell usage.. The service only works on 3 UK carrirs.

It can be done and is relatively simple. The equipment can be quite expensive and depends on how many phones you want to either monitor or track at anyone time and wether or not you are static or mobile.
Used to need the countries service providers information and usually permission to tap into thier towers for half decent triangulation, not anymore. If it's switched on and in your pocket you can be found easily enough.
We use it for discrete VIP tracking. For more covert activities in a foreign language it helps to have a local with you for the translation, particularly if the information is needed in a timely manner. If not, just record it. Used to be difficult in emitter dense environments such as London, Bangkok etc but now have the ability to latch onto the phone, monitor in idle, record when active and locate it with one antenna after the initial information is gathered.
Have I said too much?

Not at all.. But doesnt that require you to be withing 'range' distance of the cellular in question ?? Thats the devices and technologies I had read about..
The idea I can just say tel number +44 xxxx xxxxxx and feed it into any box and get its location without the telco cooperation doesnt make sense based on my understanding of the gsm network.
Also the GSM packet encryption must have been broken since the last time I looked if its now possible to decode the packet stream on the fly without the telco assistance.. I hadnt heard of any HW doing that but it is within the bounds of possibility again if you are within broadcast range.
Older ETACs used to be soo open it was mad.. Had all kinds of home made snarfers scanners and cloners when I was a kid.. Anyone else ever into phone phreaking ??

Also I am baffled how a non telco system can triangulate with a single reciever setup ??
How would that work without the telco compliance (effectively giving the multi reciever element) or multiple co operative Rx stations.. I am trying to imagine the system for location fix with a single antenna and cant picture it.. Emmision could be anywhere on a line surely..
