Phuket Hospital - Knee replacement ops
hi guys ..
my mother needs a knee replacement op . been on the UK NHS waiting list for a while and she keeps saying about going to india to have it done instead ..
it ocoured to me that they do international ops at phuket hospital and from googling the "phuket hospital knee replacment" they seem fairly good with prices ...
anyone know much about the place . they any good .. ?
i think it would require an extended visit of at least 3 weeks to phuket for her and i'd have to come and keep her company
i have no idea what a knee replacement op even entails myself .. webby says 7 days in hospital,, not much else

Both Phuket International Hospital ,and Bangkok Phuket Hospital have very good reputations and are probably (in my opinion) better than a lot of UK hospitals. I know people who have had Orthopaedic surgery there and have had first class results , standards of care are very high and medical/surgical treatment is excellent.
Can't actually comment on knee replacement surgery , as it can vary depending on amount of degeneration in the joint , but they can now do total/partial joint , so it would be up to the doc to decide what's necessary.
"Normal" total knee replacement (one knee) usually takes about 2-3 hours, lots of physiotherapy after-wards ( not my field , so not sure how long).
My advice would be to get as much information you can from your mother's doctor , and then e-mail both hospitals and see what they offer. India may be cheaper , and I cannot comment on the hospitals there but I would have surgery in Phuket if I had a choice. And as someone who works in Operating Theatres , I hope I never need to , LOS is for my holidays so the last place I want to end up is "on the table".

NHS had some agreements with Belgium. Maybe you can check if there is a possibility. Living in Bruges and know English and Dutch patients comming here. No waiting list.

A friend showed me some pictures of him visiting an Indian hospital. He sprained his ankle and had to get an x-ray. After seeing pictures of the equipment used i would NOT want to hurt myself in India and definitly NOT have surgery there.
There are probably huge differences in the Hospitals there tho, and i cant realy say that Indian healthcare is worse or better then anywhere else. Im just basing my opinions on those horrific pictures

Its the same in Thailand, there are some hospitals where you hope that you didnt end up in, and there are others that are world class. I dont belief that you can generalise so much after only a single exposure to something.

I have worked in hospitals in the UK that I would definately NOT have surgery in . There are good and bad in every country.

Stevem, ofcourse, i wasnt realy trying to generalize here. Because i know nothing about India whatsoever. I was simply telling about the horrific picture my friend showed me and my opinions about them. Im sure there are top notch med care in India for the rich indians, same in all country's.

Brumingrad is world class I am told.. Bangkok Int is pretty superb but I find they do pad the bills up very fast.. The Phuket International is a notch down in looks and doctors but thier nursing care is the best of the bunch (attention genuinely caring etc)..
I would be more worried about the recouperation and after care time.. I doubt a knee op can fly back home soon and recovery period would be an important consideration.

I had ortho surg at Bangkok Phuket Hospital. I have 25 + years of hospital experience in the US and I have to say BPH is top notch. Am 100% after surg.
